Celebs don't really seem to have to do that much extra to get one. Southgate was just doing his very well paid job

MermaidEyes · 31/12/2024 13:08

I was shocked by this one, mostly because I thought he was dead.

😬 Still going strong at 90!

And they didn't even win a major title 😂 I'd be embarrassed to receive it if I was him, especially given the success of the women's team.

Pedallleur · 31/12/2024 13:51

Surprised Stephen Fry hasn't been knighted before. He and Charles have been besties for years.

MyrtleStrumpet · 31/12/2024 13:52

Pookyblert · 31/12/2024 12:32

Are there any benefits the people get? Like with freedom of the city etc

If you get a knighthood or damehood, the Royal College of Arms will design you a coat of arms, but you have to pay for it.

Craftysue · 31/12/2024 14:00

I would have liked Kevin Sinfield to have a been awarded a knighthood - such an inspirational man and having lost my MIL to MND, I'm grateful for the high profile this terrible disease is getting..

Houseplanter · 31/12/2024 14:15

I agree Kevin Sinfield should have been knighted. Has used his position to go over and above to raise funds and support.

Gareth Southgate has done what exactly?! His job? Given that was to win silver, he failed

dynamiccactus · 31/12/2024 14:28

Really glad to see KJT (heptathlete) on there though think she deserved higher than MBE.

Surprised Helen Glover hasn't got a damehood.

Utterly disgusting that my old Tory MP has a knighthood! He has done absolutely nothing for his constituents or the country!

BearPear · 31/12/2024 14:42

Another vote for Kevin Sinfield, it’s shocking that he hasn’t been recognised (especially when compared to some who have). I’m secretly hoping there’s a Lordship in the wings for him!

I was surprised Sarah Lancashire got a CBE. Surely by this time she should have a damehood? Carey Mulligan, however, I can understand.

God knows what Southgate has done to deserve a knighthood, but better him than Beckham.

DanceTheDevilBackIntoHisHole · 31/12/2024 15:13

Absolutely delighted to see Joeli Brearley recognized in the list, especially as she's just stepped down as CEO of Pregnant then Screwed. That organization has done so much incredible work and she really deserves it.

MabelMoo23 · 31/12/2024 15:26

I’m thrilled about Joeli Brearley from Pregnant and Screwed. So well deserved

I would have loved to have seen Shearsmith and Pemberton get CBEs for whatever the services to entertainment one is - after completing nine series of inside no. 9 in 2024, they deserved it.
I also, at some point, would like recognition of James Graham.

TizerorFizz · 31/12/2024 15:54

@spuddy4 For decades now the men’s football competitions have been significantly more competitive than the women’s competitions. Also the manager of the women’s team is Dutch. I do think Southgate did turn our fortunes around when up against intense and deep opposition, As the women’s game develops, it’s likely the quality will get deeper too so far more countries will have women’s teams.

I just think there’s huge inconsistency in sport awards. Has a darts player ever been a sir? Or what about a snooker player? Sport gets recognised immediately for some (athletes and rowers) and not at all for others, eg Daley Thompson? Has he turned one down? Nick Skelton not a Sir. He's been at the top for a lifetime! Hardly anyone who has an equine career gets anything. Adam Peaty just has an OBE in swimming. He’s achieved more than anyone else in swimming.

We have Dame Mary Berry but no Dame Delia? That seems odd. Who has probably had more influence on the nation’s cooking habits? Happy to be corrected if I’ve missed their gongs!

weareallqueens · 31/12/2024 16:12

The whole thing is a nonsense imo. I always like to speculate on who's turned them down.

TizerorFizz · 31/12/2024 16:15

Why are the Kings doctors special? How have they gone above and beyond? How are they more deserving than anyone else’s cancer doctors?

Flatbellyfella · 31/12/2024 16:16

Giving Khan a knighthood devalues everyone else’s awards in my opinion.

Damnloginpopup · 31/12/2024 16:16

I didn't get fuck all. Again. I'm giving up.

His determinism to improve London's air quality, has saved many lives at the risk of being hated and vilified by many is commendable.

Bluevelvetsofa · 31/12/2024 16:27

@dynamiccactus do we live in the same area? An ex MP who was never seen in the constituency, didn’t live there and never did anything useful in education.

Feelingstrange2 · 31/12/2024 16:28

A local guy got something for 20 years of dedicated charity work. It will mean a lot to him so I'm very pleased for him.

Good to see Stephen Fry too.
