Who's cleaning and de-cluttering?

NorthernGirlie · 30/12/2024 12:10

I'm on a mission - I'm off till the 6th (we do have visitors coming tomorrow for 3 days so that'll hold me up) We have too much stuff and I'm sick of it. Just having the pantry cleared has made me feel way more motivated!

Already done:

  • Emptied, cleaned and organised the fridge freezer
  • Emptied and organised the pantry
  • Pully out cupboard next to the cooker emptied and organised

To do:

  • Empty and re-organise kitchen cupboards and drawers (only have bottom cupboards / drawers so not as big a job as it sounds)
  • Empty and sort my junk drawer in the living room
  • Sort mine and ds' shoe boxes and list some on Vinted
  • Empty and sort ds' Kallax - massive job. He'll moan and help
  • Empty and sort utility room cupboards
  • Sort ds' clothes and other Christmas stuff. List older stuff on Vinted

My main issue will be getting the stuff out of the house - I don't drive so need to enlist DH and he HATES doing charity shop runs!

Dh is decorating the bathroom by the way, he's not just sitting watching me!

Next weekend I'll be doing my annual decluttering exercise. Sorting through old clothes, toys, electricals, etc that we no longer use and take them to the dump/charity shop.

NorthernGirlie · 30/12/2024 12:23

@Pamosonic I usually do a half hearted clear out but I literally woke up in the night thinking about whati can get rid of!

Well, I'm alternating between scrolling on MN and reading. But I REALLY need to clean and declutter.

If I can just find my motivation first...

Itsmyluckyegg · 30/12/2024 12:29

I woke up with a mission too! However I fell back asleep and I am now half heartedly pottering about.

Todays plan,

Kitchen, including cupboards
Island cupboard/drawers
Stairs- they are oak but waiting to be stained as we are still having work done but they need a good scrub!
Bathroom.

Throws have been washed.
The dogs artwork on the window has been washed.
Currently soaking something white that has been turned pink with bleach!

I need to wash the hoover to I can use that too, long overdue.

gingercat02 · 30/12/2024 12:32

Me too, OP, working last week but off until the 6th.
Did the fridge and freezer yesterday, so the normal food shop had somewhere to go!
Made stock and soup and got on top of the washing.
Today's task is the 16yo bedroom. He is helping
Other tasks: a bit of a garden clear up and pruning, sorting the garage, which may involvea tip run.
Big vinted and charity bag clear out

deuxgarcons · 30/12/2024 12:33

Yes me!! Sorted out freezer and cleaned it. Next is DH's clothes clear out as he can't find anything in wardrobe as too much old stuff he doesn't wear so bag that up for charity shop. Then shredding mountain of paperwork that's piled up. Getting rid of "stuff" that just lies around and not needed (and is rubbish really!). Also must do the two "general" drawers in the kitchen. So satisfying😁

HelpMeGetThrough · 30/12/2024 12:34

We don't have clutter (exception is the 18 and 23 year olds rooms) and are minimalist, but Christmas decorations are down and put away and I've polished/dusted and hoovered the downstairs, so it feels good again.

Decorations were doing my head in, felt too cluttered and we didn't have many.

I'm quite brutal with my decluttering. Generally if we haven't used it in the last 1-2 years or if it's not of sentimental value then I get rid.

PerambulationFrustration · 30/12/2024 12:46

I need to declutter my bookshelves. I'd like them to look like the Instagram ones - good selection of books, some nice plants and ornaments, a candle or two.
Instead I have shelves heaving with books and random crap that the kids have dumped there.
Also need to clear out my fridge and freezer.

LoafofSellotape · 30/12/2024 12:48

I declutter weekly so it doesn't build up but have just blitzed the house and taken the Xmas decorations down as visitors are gone now. Smell lovely and looks very empty ...

Nothing like a good clear out!

hopeishere · 30/12/2024 12:53

I am dying to take the decorations down but DH and DS want them up until NYD. I'm planning to get up early that day and get cracking!!

Might clear out a few cupboards in the meantime.

Soccermumamir · 30/12/2024 12:57

I need to do a 'spring' clean. I've just taken down the trees and decorations, hoovered over and have put a 2nd coat of radiator paint on radiators in bathroom. I need to go through the kitchen cupboards and kids things again as well 🤦‍♀️

thegirlwithapearl · 30/12/2024 13:04

Me! There isn't much to do as I did a clear out before Christmas in anticipation of the new toys that would need space, and I always do it in time for the old/unused toys to get in the charity shops in time to be bought as Christmas gifts.
But I've taken down the tree and decorations, tidied the kitchen, hoovered and after lunch I am going to find homes for all the new toys in the playroom.

Starryspam · 30/12/2024 13:06

I've done some bits from the freezer today! Will keep on trying to do a few things each day. Also been redecorating.

As I do it I realise how bound we are by clutter that we can't enjoy life so much! It's ridiculous really.

My limit is 3 months. If not used, in the bin it goes.

Love it 👍🏼 I was sort of meaning seasonal items that only get used in winter/summer.

GreyBlackBay · 30/12/2024 13:10

I'm reading this trying to be motivated. My house is full of very tidy clutter. So no one feels the need to get rid but it plays on my mind!

Its rehomeing things that I struggle with. I hate waste and know that the local charity shops are so overwhelmed they're just chucking stuff so I have to list it all on free cycle. My DSis just throws stuff away, I want to be more like that.

Good luck to you all. Please come back and say how much better you feel for it!

familyissues12345 · 30/12/2024 13:11

I will be! However for today I'm just getting ready to new year visitors. Cleaning and clearing will commence on Thursday Xmas Grin

Me too!! I love them initially, but by Boxing Day I'm fed up with the clutter. We have guests on NYE- NYD, but I anticipate having them down on the evening of NYD!

Gothzilla · 30/12/2024 13:21

I’m rearranging my clothes wardrobe & chest of drawers. I have 18! stripe tops!! Varying colours and types - T-shirt’s, vests, blouses/shirts, jumpers. I didn’t know I loved stripes so much 🙃

FedUp1000 · 30/12/2024 13:30

I really really need to do this but struggling to find the motivation

Peaceandquietandacuppa · 30/12/2024 13:33

We’ve got a new sofa coming so I’ve booked a council collection for 16 Jan. I’ve added in 6 bags of rubbish for collection and aim to fill them with broken toys, clothes that can’t be donated etc.

Ive also started a couple of charity bags. It feels good!

NorthernGirlie · 30/12/2024 13:33

So - not as much progress as I'd hoped. The cupboards are taking longer than anticipated! I'm being ruthless, dh keeps scuppered me with "what if we need that random piece of tat?"

I've sat down for a sausage butty then will crack on!

I find a year is good for clothes though because of the seasonal aspect.
