Who's cleaning and de-cluttering?

NorthernGirlie · 30/12/2024 12:10

I'm on a mission - I'm off till the 6th (we do have visitors coming tomorrow for 3 days so that'll hold me up) We have too much stuff and I'm sick of it. Just having the pantry cleared has made me feel way more motivated!

Already done:

  • Emptied, cleaned and organised the fridge freezer
  • Emptied and organised the pantry
  • Pully out cupboard next to the cooker emptied and organised

To do:

  • Empty and re-organise kitchen cupboards and drawers (only have bottom cupboards / drawers so not as big a job as it sounds)
  • Empty and sort my junk drawer in the living room
  • Sort mine and ds' shoe boxes and list some on Vinted
  • Empty and sort ds' Kallax - massive job. He'll moan and help
  • Empty and sort utility room cupboards
  • Sort ds' clothes and other Christmas stuff. List older stuff on Vinted

My main issue will be getting the stuff out of the house - I don't drive so need to enlist DH and he HATES doing charity shop runs!

DH has gone to buy bits for the bathroom so I've asked him to get some big storage boxes.

DS has piles of playmobil, that expensive wooden train stuff etc which I'd like to sell but haven't got round to. It's going in the loft!

I need to stop buying so much stuff!!!!

Hearttoharttoheart · 30/12/2024 14:05

I'm trying but my home is so small I'm overwhelmed so getting nowhere.

Deebee90 · 30/12/2024 15:35

I’m on a de clutter mission . Done 3 loads of washing today as I won’t do any tomorrow incase of bad luck. Now I’m currently shedding the spare room of anything and everything. Currently got Atleast 6 bin bags in the car and doing Atleast 3 more before I do the tip run later. So ashamed that I’ve let it build up too. In the new year I’m hopefully moving 🤞🏻 so don’t want to take that crap with me.

gingercat02 · 30/12/2024 16:01

It's New Years day you shouldn't wash (washes away your luck). We all get clean bedding for the new year

BettyBardMacDonald · 30/12/2024 16:17

I am and cannot believe what is coming out of my kitchen cupboards.

gingercat02 · 30/12/2024 16:27

DS did his bedroom himself. The fear of me being involved was too much 🤣
I have vinted his football shirts and trainers

Same - things that went out of date in 2022! Messaged my friend earlier (the 1 who's coming to stay) and she said she was surprised I had much to do as my house is so clutter free - that's because it's all rammed into cupboards and drawers!

Kitchen done - except the cup / glass drawer. I've freed up SO much space!

For some ridiculous reason I didn't want wall cupboards so my cups and glasses are in a deep drawer. They're an absolute mess, they fall over etc as they're all random and don't stack.

I'm seriously considering getting rid of any that don't stack (bar some special ones) and buying new. Is that ridiculous? The drawer makes me cross every time I open it!

Me too starting tomorrow, wardrobes cupboards I be there

CherryRipe1 · 30/12/2024 17:22

Listed 5 items on eBay, put an unused fax machine out & recycling people took it, did loads of recycling of Xmas junk; cardboard, paper, wine bottles, bag of clothes ready for Salvation Army bin. When actually is 12th night as I'm itching to take down some of the decorations?

Olika · 30/12/2024 17:24

I want to but I have nothing left to declutter as I got rid of tons of stuff 1.5 years ago. But for some reason I still have this feeling.

NorthernGirlie · 30/12/2024 17:47

@Olika nothing? I feel like I'm quitebruthless but always still have excessive stuff!

I did the cupboard of doom which is under the stairs. I thought I needed storage boxes before I started but actually a lot went in the bin/recycling and some other bits for charity. Way too many carrier bags so they’ve had a cull. I can actually walk into it now and there’s not loads of stuff all over the floor. Tree and decorations down today as well and packed away.

Olika · 30/12/2024 21:54

@NorthernGirlie in the flat nothing extra as I got rid of tons of stuff before we went abroad. In the garage there is stuff but I cannot really do it as my DH isn't succeeding in getting rid of piles of empty cardboard boxes (I think he has tendency for hoarding) so the garage overwhelms me. He started getting rid of those boxes but stopped a year ago so don't see it happening. If he got rid of the boxes I would love to open all suitcases and bags once more and see what else I can get rid of. And get rid of random stuff from the back that is now blocked by these boxes

Oh god, we've got one of those, it's got the "kids" toys in it. A tonne of Playmobil, cars, Fireman Sam and Thomas the Tank Engine.

We've been procrastinating about tidying it for a while now, well more than a while, the boys are 18 and 23!!!

The door stays firmly shut!!! 🤣🤣🤣

They're at the point where you may as well keep the toys for any future grandchildren

GreyAreas · 31/12/2024 12:24

Sorting the bedroom this week

  • turn a heap of clothes into a stunning capsule wardrobe
  • clear top of dressing table and dust everywhere
FusionChefGeoff · 31/12/2024 12:38

Re getting rid of stuff do you have a step / pavement / front lawn or any suitable space close?? We're in quite a main footpath so have had a lot of luck with a blanket on the verge with stuff on - I take a photo and post on local FB groups to help it along!

itsgettingweird · 31/12/2024 12:38

I'm halfway through. Have a tip slot booked for Saturday!

NorthernGirlie · 31/12/2024 12:40

Off to do the food shop, done nowt this morning.

Yesterday I:
-Absolutely bottomed the whole kitchen, we now own nothing in there that's not useful or in date!
-Sorted my drawer off doom
-Sorted DS' sweets and snacks (luckily his mates appeared so they've scranned most of the older stuff which has made way for the christmas stash

This afternoon:

-Take out the 3 bin bags I got from the kitchen clearout yesterday
-Box up ds' playmobil etc and get those in the loft
-Sort the Utility
-Get to the bottom of the washing baskets

I downloaded an app called Toss a few years ago and have rediscovered it. Today’s task was the fridge. I found 28 jars of sauces/condiments/food that were out of date. And one expired in 2017 which means it moved house with us, in 2018…..

NorthernGirlie · 31/12/2024 13:20

@Muffin that's hilarious!

Dh and ds aren't quite buying into my declutter which is annoying me!

TadpolesInPool · 31/12/2024 17:53

Ive been decluttering since 2020 and am now pretty minimalist (BIG declutter in 2022 as we moved overseas).

We're moving overseas again next summer so Ive been chipping away at it all year and Christmas was no exception- perfect time to get rid of decorations we no longer use.

DH is the hardest to convince. DC are generally ok. They are minimalist with their clothes and happily donate books we no longer want (helps that we currently live in a poor country so they see that their schools really need support and the books are hugely appreciated). With toys it depends. Some are easily donated. Others are hung onto even if they're not often played with.

My biggest help with clutter was changing to a minimalist mindset and stopping stuff coming into the house!

NorthernGirlie · 01/01/2025 13:50

@Tadpoles that's our issue - we always seem to be bringing stuff in. Need to have a think on how to minimise that!

Ah @NorthernGirlie you've made me feel awful. I need to get out a storage box and throw all the surface mess into there.

I did start to sort out the kitchen last night and buy loads of cleaning things today but December was a mess. Just trying to find everything and huge amounts of packing boxes
