Who's cleaning and de-cluttering?

I'm on a mission - I'm off till the 6th (we do have visitors coming tomorrow for 3 days so that'll hold me up) We have too much stuff and I'm sick of it. Just having the pantry cleared has made me feel way more motivated!

Already done:

  • Emptied, cleaned and organised the fridge freezer
  • Emptied and organised the pantry
  • Pully out cupboard next to the cooker emptied and organised

To do:

  • Empty and re-organise kitchen cupboards and drawers (only have bottom cupboards / drawers so not as big a job as it sounds)
  • Empty and sort my junk drawer in the living room
  • Sort mine and ds' shoe boxes and list some on Vinted
  • Empty and sort ds' Kallax - massive job. He'll moan and help
  • Empty and sort utility room cupboards
  • Sort ds' clothes and other Christmas stuff. List older stuff on Vinted

My main issue will be getting the stuff out of the house - I don't drive so need to enlist DH and he HATES doing charity shop runs!

Me! I'm mid-declutter.

Ruthlessly went through the board games cupboard, pantry, utility room and a few other drawers and cupboards before Christmas. Helped DD go through everything she owns on Boxing Day, completely redecorated it and just finished moving everything back in.

Still have DS's room to go plus the kitchen drawer of doom and my bedside table, but I'm feeling very productive!

I have finally got rid of items I have listed on Olio so space has been reclaimed in the hallway.

Hearttoharttoheart · 01/01/2025 16:13

I've cleared the bathroom down completely, and made a start on the kitchen. I'm being careful because our bins don't get collected for another week. If I have enough rubbish I'll get things off to the tip.

Redrosesposies · 01/01/2025 16:29

My house is permanently decluttered. I did it 10 years ago and have kept on top of it ever since.
The only thing that really needs thinning out is my wardrobe as I keep buying cheap tops in an unsuccessful effort to find some that suit instead of paying more for something well fitted and good quality. I have two triple wardrobes full as well as under bed drawers. I have the money to do it now but can't seem to get out of the habit of penny pinching. (False economy I know, if I added up how much I have spent on tat, I could have bought some really nice things)
Sorted out granddaughter's toy and book corner and bagged up the baby stuff to go to sister's house for great nephew.
Decorations down today and all back in the loft and whole of downstairs blitzed. I still keep catching the odd flash of glitter though.
Upstairs was done yesterday.

Same - things that went out of date in 2022! Messaged my friend earlier (the 1 who's coming to stay) and she said she was surprised I had much to do as my house is so clutter free - that's because it's all rammed into cupboards and drawers!

Kitchen done - except the cup / glass drawer. I've freed up SO much space!

For some ridiculous reason I didn't want wall cupboards so my cups and glasses are in a deep drawer. They're an absolute mess, they fall over etc as they're all random and don't stack.

I'm seriously considering getting rid of any that don't stack (bar some special ones) and buying new. Is that ridiculous? The drawer makes me cross every time I open it!

There are dividers for drawers, for example from Ikea, but equally you could check Youtube to see if there's anyone with a DIY version.
This could be cheaper than buying all new. There are also cabinets that you can stack on top of existing furniture, so they do not need to be hung at the wall. They still might need fixing so that kids cannot tip them down accidentally, though.

If people are clearing out useful toys or craft items, and are not interested in selling, is there maybe a chance that preschools or kindergardens or care homes for children might find them helpful?
I sometimes read here that teachers have to buy their own supplies because of lack of funds from the school, or they buy them for disadvantaged children where the parents can't or don't want to buy pens / paper / books etc.

Me!

So far I've:

Cleaned/organised all kitchen drawers and cupboards
Sorted bookcase and got rid off a hundred or so books
Got rid off ornaments
Organised bathroom cupboards

I'm currently organising my chest of drawers in the bedroom.

Still have to do clothes and big junk cupboard which is rammed. I'm dreading it.

I have a charity collection organised for mid January.

I’m feeling very guilty - we had some friends over before Christmas, and I was running around our very untidy house like a headless chicken trying to sort it before they arrived. I’ve had a bin bag of old stuff (glasses and old mugs, a few bits of cutlery, an old chopping board, unwanted toys, old clothes etc) that I’ve been meaning to list on FreeCycle but never got round to it. In my panic to make the house look presentable, I chucked the bag in the rubbish bin and off it went to landfill. I’ve been furious with myself ever since.

Deargodletitgo · 01/01/2025 21:22

I don't have junk drawers, after a cull late last year, but the utility room could do with a sort out plus my books have gotten a bit too unwieldy

Starryspam · 01/01/2025 22:40

I have today gotten rid of bags and bags of stuff including kids clothes, an electric blanket that wasn't working and a blind that wasn't working either.

I tend to think I am pretty good at decluttering but then I go and find masses more stuff!!! and am still falling over stuff and boxes and bags and so on - just crazy. I definitely need to Kondo my kitchen - that seems to be the worst.

Printedword · 01/01/2025 23:05

I'm holding off until charity shoos re open for donations and bin collections are back to normal

familyissues12345 · 02/01/2025 11:01

I'm starting today, planning to commence with our bedroom and en suite, both of which drive me a bit nuts!

nighttime78 · 02/01/2025 11:53

Just why do we amass so much stuff?

Shakeyourbaublesandsmile · 02/01/2025 11:59

Me….but it’s on going

I’ve also done the pantry and other big cupboard and fridge. Have put food deliver away

To do, when I get off here….

Laundry x 8 (bedding and towels plus backlog)
Hoover around downstairs
Dust and hoover upstairs
Bathroom x 2
Downstairs loo

Decluttering spare room
store holiday clothes
Xmas decs up to loft
furniture to go somewhere

Happy cleaning and decluttering everyone

blackheartsgirl · 02/01/2025 12:03

Yes I am

Day before yesterday I cleared and decluttered my front room and hall, I binned 6 bin bags of crap and have a bag of dvds and a board game to take to the charity shop later

It felt good!

gingercat02 · 02/01/2025 12:07

I have everything on vinted or charity bagged. Washing up to date and dried and put away. Christmas food sorted and frozen or meal planned.
The garage hasn't happened, and it's too frosty to garden today. So we are going for a walk instead 😎

LemograssLollipop · 02/01/2025 13:13

My aim in 2025 is to be ruthless with the decluttering. Usually my decluttering means finding a home for the junk but what I need is for it to actually go out the door.
Reading this thread for inspiration 🛍️

I have had a massive breakthrough with my 12 year old! he has suddenly allowed me to get rid of a load of old trinkets, toys and books he's been refusing to get rid of for YEARS! I had really got frustrated for so long wondering if he was turning into a hoarder, but he's been surprisingly good about it and finally ready to release the past. Saying how good it feels.

CarolinaWren · 03/01/2025 11:09

I'm determined to get my mess under control, but I think it's going to take some time. I'm working on one small category at a time and I have a LOT of clutter to sort through.

Yesterday I started cleaning the entertainment center, which has several shelves with doors. Junk tends to accumulate as it's hidden. I sorted through some old journals, magazines and fill-in-the-blank books, dusty candles and decorative items. I filled an entire trash basket and I could probably have discarded even more. I still need to sort through DVDs and CDs. I'm sure I'll find a lot there to discard.

Today I cleaned out the broom closet plus a shelf in the kitchen that holds cleaning products. I have a ridiculous number of duplicates, mostly due to "losing" products when I was having major renovations done. I tossed 2 mops that I don't like, a whisk broom that doesn't work well and numerous products I don't like and never use. That still leaves a lot of duplicates of products I actually like and use. Hopefully I will be able to use them up now that I have them organized.

NorthernGirlie · 03/01/2025 11:40

Our guests go home today (of they wver get put of bed!!) So I'll be starting again.

I want to do the rest of the play room, the utility and start listing on Vinted today.

Depends what time they leave though really 😭🙈

I have three bin bags full of clothes sat in the car waiting to get dropped off at the charity clothing bins which were annoyingly all full when I went yesterday. But at least they're in the boot of the car and out of the house.

I've also spent this morning putting DDs' Playmobil toys they no longer play with onto Facebook Marketplace to sell. Any money I get from them I'll put in DDs' savings accounts as they've been good agreeing to sell it all rather than hoard it which is their usual stance!

gingercat02 · 03/01/2025 12:42

Kitchen cupboards ✔️
DH sorting recycling in the garage ✔️
Last of the Christmas food dealt with ✔️
Bedrooms ✔️
I have even got DS out of bed to do some revision

Large cupboard area upstairs
Bathroom sink cabinet - piles of???
Small side board - stuff gets rammed in there randomly
Large sideboard - craft stuff that’s I need to accept is no longer needed

Starryspam · 04/01/2025 17:21

Hi All, I have so much to declutter and no room to store it so I'm pretty much giving it all away on Olio. Good stuff included - chairs, lightshades and so on. I have pangs of guilt about the money spent and wasted... but to list it all on FB Marketplace would take hours and weeks to get rid of it all for probably not a lot.

Does anyone have words of advice? Can you give me "permission" to get rid of it all free of charge? I am feeling so much guilt. 😥I will attempt to sell some of it but honestly feel like it will take me weeks to list and sell all of it - so it's easier to just freebie it.

NB I would give to charity but don't have a car hence Olio easier!

MissyB1 · 04/01/2025 17:28

I’m always declutterring the house and I’m fairly good at keeping on top of it, but dh is supposed to take care of the garage - but doesn’t 😡
I’m determined he isn’t going to make that my job too (everything else seems to be). He just says “yeah it’s a bit messy but it’s only a garage” 🙄
