“You seem like you’d enjoy Dubai” what does this mean?

If a colleague said this to you, what would you think they meant?

OP posts:
Mushroo · 29/12/2024 08:54

Based on stereotypes, someone who likes shopping, a ‘big night out’, lying by the pool and designer labels.

Or just someone who said they were after a bit of winter sun

BonnyBugbear · 29/12/2024 09:00

You like blingy things, crystals on phone covers, drinking and shopping, Instagram, tanning etc

Ihavearedbag · 29/12/2024 09:22

You have no taste

PhilosophicalCheeseSandwich · 29/12/2024 09:25

They think I'm a consumerist. Or if they'd been themselves and enjoyed it, that they think I have similar tastes to them.

Upstartled · 29/12/2024 09:26

They think that you lack any kind of moral fortitude that couldn't be subverted by a jazzy hotel and shopping mall?

WhimsicalGubbins76 · 29/12/2024 09:26

Could mean literally anything…
-You enjoy hot weather
-Your ideal holiday is lying beside a pool
-you’re ostentatious
-you’re homophobic
-You like things that are Modern and New
-You’re a shopaholic

GameOfJones · 29/12/2024 09:27

I would assume they meant I was focused on looks, liked shopping and designer labels. And wanted to shop and sunbathe rather than sightsee.

AmazingBouncingFerret · 29/12/2024 09:28

It would depend on what their own opinion of Dubai is.
It could be a genuine holiday recommendation or it could be an insult.

Hillcrest2022 · 29/12/2024 09:28

Wouldn't sound like a compliment to me.

MilitantFawcett · 29/12/2024 09:29

I’d think they meant I was either exactly like them or exactly NOT like them

PheasantPluckers · 29/12/2024 09:30

BonnyBugbear · 29/12/2024 09:00

Yep.

Plus fake hair, fake eyelashes, fake nails, filler.

Manchesterbythesea · 29/12/2024 09:34

Probably not a compliment anyway.

Greyrockin · 29/12/2024 09:41

I wouldn't take it as a compliment. I'd never visit Dubai or any other UAE location for political reasons, but many people (my DSis included) are happy to ignore its poor record on human rights and embrace the shiny-ness and glamour of the built environment. DSis even witnessed a family abusing a nanny by the hotel pool (shouting at her, all eating and drinking on a really hot day, but nanny not offered anything to eat or drink) and she still goes back to visit 🙄

SemperIdem · 29/12/2024 09:42

It is, without a shadow of a doubt, an insult.

wwyd2021medicine · 29/12/2024 09:43

I'd be mortified if someone said that to me

Itsaswelltime · 29/12/2024 09:49

Homophobic and lacking in good taste, class.

Spends a lot of money to look cheap.

Doesn’t care about modern slavery or the environment.

Maybe wants to be an influencer.

It’s pretty much the harshest insult I could receive.

Donotgogentle · 29/12/2024 09:49

Either the above, or that you’re the type of authoritarian who thinks it’s ok for 18 year old holidaymakers to be sentenced to a year in prison for consensual sex.

BonnyBugbear · 29/12/2024 09:50

@clarica its a veiled insult. Do you like this person?

Bornnotbourne · 29/12/2024 09:50

To be honest the double standards of many people on here astound me. They are quick to criticise Dubai for its human rights record but are more than happy to travel to Egypt, Morocco etc. Many people in the UK have no idea about countries human rights records and are just happy for some cheap winter sun. If you look at it closely there are ethical problems with all travel.

Erm, bit of a reach, you have no idea where other posters holiday.

Shrewsbury247 · 29/12/2024 09:56

it would depend on the person who said it and your relationship with them I suppose.
They could genuinely love Dubai and are suggesting you visit OR it could be a snide insult from someone who doesn’t like you. Context is everything in this situation.

ShimmySkirt · 29/12/2024 09:59

I think it means they think you like shopping, lounging by the pool, love hot weather, glam person.
Dubai isn't known for culture or sporty activities even though it absolutely has both, Dubai is more about showing off and spending money.

Onand · 29/12/2024 10:00

That you look as though you’d enjoy champagne Prosecco brunches, flashy cars, look like a sun worshiper, maybe have lip filler, new build house with grey sofas and mirrored furniture, wears the Zara dupe of Baccarat Rouge, Kids wear Moncler coats.

The last Dubai thread was asking for alternatives as the poster felt Dubai didn’t align with her ethical standards. The responses were to go Egypt or Morocco.

Most of the off the charts hate for Dubai on MN originates from envy of money and a lifestyle most MN’ers could never afford.
