“You seem like you’d enjoy Dubai” what does this mean?

If a colleague said this to you, what would you think they meant?

I've just looked up the price of holidays in Dubai - seems pretty affordable. I suspect it is possible to spend a hell of a lot of money on one of those dreadful blingy high rise hotels or satellite Michellin star restaurants but the packages seem similarly priced to other winter sun destinations.

So people who want some winter sun and those cultural experiences but have a dubai budget or flights to other destinations are inaccessible, shouldn't be able to have them because you deem it tacky?

Where have I said they shouldn’t be able to go? It’s not what I said at all, is it? Of course they can, and tens if not hundreds of thousands do. As they do to Benidorm. But it’s not for me.

The original post was asking what you’d think if a colleague said ‘you seem like you’d enjoy Dubai’ to you. The consensus seems to be that it’s not a compliment. So it’s not just me deeming its tacky, it is tacky ☺️

And, before anyone gets on their high horse, I’ve been enough times over the years either for work or transiting the place to be happy with my assessment. I still haven’t completely forgiven my late husband for taking me there for my 35th birthday weekend, even though the hotel did provide a wonderful cake 😂 But others, I am sure, love it. Each to their own.

ODFOD I know those things and far more than you I'd guess.

@Stableable what would 'show off' mums be showing off about though? As many people on this thread have said, Dubai is seen as a vulgar destination for people who want to appear to have a champagne lifestyle at prosecco prices. Really posh people absolutely wouldn't be seen dead there.

Show off wealth and ability to afford/enjoy "luxury" - there are many who can't afford Dubai.

I don't want to get into class. There are rich and affluent folks on the working and middle class spectrum too.

I agree, posh people rarely, if ever, show off. Nor would they choose to holiday in Dubai.

@DancingNotDrowning i think your bc work needs to find a better travel agent!

Possibly but I just did a quick look on Virgin to see if my costs were way off and 5 nights B&B at the Marriott in January is £1450pp.

I’ve paid more for holidays and less for holidays but I wouldn’t describe £3k for a couple for 5 nights particularly cheap and I find it odd that so many posters do.

I haven’t been to Dubai but I have a couple of young relatives who lived there for a while - let’s just say I’m rather suspicious about how they funded themselves.

Im also in the position of having spent 2 weeks training police from Dubai. Not the ladies of course because they weren’t allowed to travel to the UK. Let me tell you 2 weeks hearing about how they operate as a force and some of their working practices completely put me off ever setting foot in the place. And how my young relatives made it out without going to prison is a complete mystery to me. But hey… keep coming up with reasons why it’s a great place to visit.

It’s not that cheap for a week of sun in Europe, though it’s also not particularly expensive. It is cheap for a week (or so) of a long hail sun/sea/beach hotel holiday though. As that’s going to be multiples of that if you go to the Indian Ocean or Caribbean, albeit it would take you a bit longer to get there!!
