“You seem like you’d enjoy Dubai” what does this mean?

If a colleague said this to you, what would you think they meant?

@Jennyathemall

Much of Dubai is faux luxury and is easily affordable by many on MN. Affordability is not the reason it is derided. If that was the case, there would be a multitude of threads about Bora Bora being a dreadful place.

Dubai’s other issues by far outweigh cost. I could afford to go easily, but in reality couldn’t be paid to.

turkeyboots · 29/12/2024 10:17

They think you are shallow and materialistic. Probably an insult, unless you think they are also shallow and materialistic, in which case it could be a genuine recommendation.

littleluncheon · 29/12/2024 10:20

Are you friendly with them generally? They might love Dubai and think you would too.

If not, they're saying you have no class and/or no morals 😂

CaptainMyCaptain · 29/12/2024 10:20

Shallow and materialistic. Not interested in politics or ethics.

LadyOfACertainAge · 29/12/2024 10:26

Ooh I do love a judgy mumsnet post. I know a fair few who have lived in or been on holiday to UAE and I’d say few of them are the sort mentioned here.

It could mean a number of things - I’d probably have responded with “oh really, how come?”. Might mean you like the finer things in life, might mean you just want a relaxing holiday in guaranteed sun, might mean you like heights and places that have that awe effect. I think all of those things are more likely then because you’re a homophobic turkey teethed classless person with no morals (unless of course you recognise that in yourself)

ShimmySkirt · 29/12/2024 10:31

Probably they think you're like the Made in Essex people.

Dontwearmysocks · 29/12/2024 10:33

Dreadful (no?) taste in holidays.

ShowOfHands · 29/12/2024 10:34

Out neighbours adore Dubai and are nothing like the fake tan stereotype. They're a different stereotype entirely! They're retired. She has never worked and he left the military very high up. They are utterly obsessed with appearances and their house, car and garden are immaculate. They're pretty centre right in their views and like to share them. I really like them, but they holiday in Dubai because they genuinely think it's representative of having made it in life.

Most people I know could afford Dubai, but wouldn't go there. Lots of it is to do with the terrible moral issues attached to the place, but it's also because it's intellectually bankrupt. It's nothing to do with envy or not being able to afford it.

PerfumeCat · 29/12/2024 10:35

Jennyathemall · 29/12/2024 10:06

Most of the off the charts hate for Dubai on MN originates from envy of money and a lifestyle most MN’ers could never afford.

Or, some people have standards, and taste.

TheYearOfSmallThings · 29/12/2024 10:37

I would feel they felt I had poor taste UNLESS they themselves love Dubai, in which case I would think they meant it sincerely and thought I would have a good time there too.

DarkAndTwisties · 29/12/2024 10:40

Do they like Dubai?

Generally I don't think I'd take this as a compliment, but if they really like Dubai then it probably doesn't really mean anything beyond they like it and think others would as well.

FoxtonFoxton · 29/12/2024 10:44

I wouldn't take it as a compliment for sure 😬
Very sly bitchy.

SmolTrashPanda · 29/12/2024 10:47

If I said that to someone it wouldn't be a compliment, honestly. I'd be a little bit bothered if someone said it to me too.

CointreauQuaint · 29/12/2024 10:48

You have a ‘live, laugh, love’ decal up in your kitchen.

ThatsNotMyTeen · 29/12/2024 10:48

Given I can’t imagine much worse than going to Dubai, I certainly wouldn’t be taking it as a compliment myself 🫣

BaubleMania · 29/12/2024 10:48

You look like you'd enjoy Dubai = I think you are a basic bitch.

It's not a compliment.

Zanatdy · 29/12/2024 10:50

I would deem it quite insulting, but maybe not meant that way, but agree re enjoying designer goods, being waited on, luxury etc.

Doggymummar · 29/12/2024 10:51

Cheap and tacky. Like Vegas on a budget.( I love Vegas btw and would love Dubai for the architecture and did 25 years ago)knowing what I now know about human rights it's a no. Same as how I would love to go to Russia for the architecture but never could for Political reasons

NordicwithTeen · 29/12/2024 10:58

I'd imagine someone who likes expensive new shiny things and less history and culture in a destination.

username299 · 29/12/2024 11:13

Someone who likes the heat, shopping centres, designer gear and follows the crowd.

Miyagi99 · 29/12/2024 11:15

High maintenance and flash.

lynnie75 · 29/12/2024 11:20

I be offended. Would think they thought me a bit 'chavvy'.

orangewasp · 29/12/2024 11:21

It entirely depends on what the person who said it think of Dubai.

AshCrapp · 29/12/2024 11:23

It's an insult. It means that you like expensive and shiny things, enjoy being treated like royalty, and don't care about human rights.

1dayatatime · 29/12/2024 11:26

Hillcrest2022 · 29/12/2024 09:28

Wouldn't sound like a compliment to me.

I agree- I would be quite offended if someone said that to me.
