“You seem like you’d enjoy Dubai” what does this mean?

If a colleague said this to you, what would you think they meant?

OP posts:
ARainyNightInSoho · 29/12/2024 17:06

@Stableable what would 'show off' mums be showing off about though? As many people on this thread have said, Dubai is seen as a vulgar destination for people who want to appear to have a champagne lifestyle at prosecco prices. Really posh people absolutely wouldn't be seen dead there.

pimplebum · 29/12/2024 17:07

Would be nice op if you came back to let us know what you think ?
are you insulted ?
was it the office bitch ?

BobbyBiscuits · 29/12/2024 18:12

BobbyBiscuits · 29/12/2024 12:39

Nobody would ever say that to me. I hope.

Yeah, tacky, blingy, big logo labels, posing for pics, editing your pics, plastic surgery, overpriced mediocre food, skyscrapers, boiling hot weather, being subordinated by men, racism, classism, homophobia, erm...think that's it.

Wanted to remove 'classism'. I don't think they really have class, the westerners who are in Dubai, more just money talks. I sound like I'm generalising but I just do not see the appeal.

Hillcrest2022 · 29/12/2024 22:27

You have "Live , laugh, love" in your home..

AmazingGraze · 29/12/2024 22:41

You have signs about Prosecco all over your house and your drink it too.

Alwayswonderedwhy · 29/12/2024 22:50

I'd take it as an insult.

Ginkypig · 29/12/2024 22:52

CaptainMyCaptain · 29/12/2024 10:20

Shallow and materialistic. Not interested in politics or ethics.

Edited

This and unsophisticated or likes surface level “luxury”

I wouldn’t take it as a compliment if someone said it to me!

i wouldn’t judge someone else for saying it was their thing (except for the ethical implications) most people mentally separate themselves from the reality though.

Most of the off the charts hate for Dubai on MN originates from envy of money and a lifestyle most MN’ers could never afford.

No it’s because I hate slavery.
I hate women being treated as third rate humans. and imprisoned for no reason.
I hate homophobia.
Do I need to list more?

Frizzlem1zzle · 29/12/2024 23:08

I'm taking it none of you are under 25 here??

If you're under 25, we know what it means. It basically means materialistic and Easy. So there's this rumor that Saudi billionaire will invite hot naive money hungry Instagram girls to Dubai, you know, for a sex party essentially. But then they end up, pooping on them or even in them. That's the whole thing.

So now whenever you see an Insta model getting rich just for being pretty and hanging out with rich people, people start spreading rumors about I bet she goes to Dubai and get pooed on / I bet you love to go to Dubai etc so it could mean any of those things

There's more to the place than what you'd see on the only way is Essex, but most mumsnet users aren't aware of that. Of course there's some human rights issues but that's the same for a vast many countries unfortunately.
There's beautiful bastakiya old town, spice souks, date markets, stunning mosques with interesting history, museums alongside the flash hotels and cars.

But to answer your question, probably meant as an insult from the same type of people on here slating a place they haven't visited or researched very well.

This Mumsnet user hasn't watched TOWIE. I know it exists, and that other people like it. But it isn't my cup of tea. Essex was never like that while I grew up there! Grin

Its known as Dubai porta potty, basically young pretty women willing to do degrading things for money. If that indeed is what this person you're talking about was referring to. That's just what I would take it to mean in my age bracket anyway, so I would find it offensive

Add Turkey teeth, lip filler, Adanola socks, Stanley cup, could work as an esthetician or boyfriend is a dealer, parents holiday in Marbs, buys clothes from Shein and tried a few MLMs.

Moonshine5 · 30/12/2024 01:01

They don't like you

Bewareofstepfords · 30/12/2024 01:04

You enjoy having your domestic drudgery taken care of by what is more or less slave labour.

countdowntonap · 30/12/2024 07:32

It completely depends on the context of how/when it was said. For example:
•1) person has just returned from Dubai and loved it. They’re of the view that anything they think is great must actually be great and therefore would be enjoyed by everyone else too.
•2) person is bitching about Dubai and the ‘kind of people’ that go there. They then state with a sneer ‘O @clarica , you’d love Dubai’

ARainyNightInSoho · 30/12/2024 07:36

I wonder if OP was simply trying out how quickly somebody would say ‘chavvy’

In any case, OP never bothered to respond to any one of the many posts in this thread.

No, it really doesn't. Most of the hatred is for the vapid tasteless materialism and dodgy moral compass.

What different does being under 25 make FFS? That's as insulting as telling someone they'd like Dubai. I'm nearly 70 and well aware of the type things you mention and much more.

I'm also aware of the slave labourers from Bangladesh who have their passports removed and live in sub standard 'hostels' out of sight of tourists. If they are unfortunate enough to be made redundant they receive no pay but everything has to be paid upfront. Someone I know was in a managerial position and this happened to his workers, he ended up supporting them himself until they could get another job.

smilingeleanor · 30/12/2024 07:50

you like tans, botox, designer labels, rampant consumerism, probably make tiktok videos

DancingNotDrowning · 30/12/2024 08:04

I went on a work trip in November. I go a couple of times a year.

my business class flight was £4.8k (economy £900) and the averagely nice hotel I stayed in was £340 per night. A bottle of half decent wine was £95.

I’m surprised at how many people are stating that’s a cheap holiday.

I’m not convinced the vitriol comes exclusively from their poor human rights record. There are many many countries organisations that are equally problematic that don’t attract the same level of opprobrium

Bellyblueboy · 30/12/2024 09:22

@DancingNotDrowning i think your bc work needs to find a better travel agent!

But if that’s your thing, there are better places in the ME to get that from. Oman for example, while it has some of the same human rights issues is at least far less tacky on the whole than Dubai and is a much more laid back place to visit. Of course Muscat is more expensive than Dubai…

Which brings me back to my issue with the place. It’s not an expensive destination so it attracts people, mainly, that are less well travelled, who then get themselves into the type of situation of that lad a few weeks ago. For cheap winter sun that’s not too far away it’s a reliable destination, and that’s important if you don’t get / don’t have many holidays a year. But there are better beaches, better luxury hotels, better malls, better museums and better cultural experiences in other places. But maybe not all in one place, and definitely a lot more expensive, and probably more than 7 hours away. It’s the Benidorm of the Middle East.

So people who want some winter sun and those cultural experiences but have a dubai budget or flights to other destinations are inaccessible, shouldn't be able to have them because you deem it tacky?

Actually, no. We could easily afford the Dubai lifestyle but would never dream of living it, thank you.
