“You seem like you’d enjoy Dubai” what does this mean?

If a colleague said this to you, what would you think they meant?

OP posts:

BonnyBugbear · 29/12/2024 09:50

@clarica its a veiled insult. Do you like this person?

I wouldn't see this as a 'veiled' insult.
🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣

memyselfi · 29/12/2024 14:20

Honestly I'd think they meant I was shallow and a bit thick.
Did you say this to someone or were you on the receiving end ?
It's not a compliment.

Stableable · 29/12/2024 14:24

That you are a vapid/empty/Surrey/4x4/showoff mum.

slightlydistrac · 29/12/2024 12:20

Dubai has literally none of the things I look forward to on holiday.

I'm much more of a country walks, nice pub lunch, cream teas, paddling about in rock pools, wandering around old castles, steam train rides, perusing random charity shops, looking at wild flowers, collecting pebbles on the beach kind of person.

Tbf very few major cities offer all of that at once without having to travel outside of them?

AmazingGraze · 29/12/2024 14:29

I find it hard not to judge when people say they have been to Dubai or like or. I have to be honest.

Stableable · 29/12/2024 14:31

Nice, sun/fun-loving affluent people, but shallow and into conspicuous consumption.

Floppyelf · 29/12/2024 14:32

Ihavearedbag · 29/12/2024 09:22

You have no taste

😂

Most of the off the charts hate for Dubai on MN originates from envy of money and a lifestyle most MN’ers could never afford.

You couldn't be more wrong if you tried you really couldn't!

Bridget05 · 29/12/2024 14:34

You are a consumer with more money than sense, no imagination and no appreciation for taste of culture. I would be really insulted.

I’d hate the kind of ‘lifestyle’ that revolved around money.

I’d take a mountain bothy, or a tent over a 5* hotel anyday.

Not everyone has the same tastes!

Ponderingwindow · 29/12/2024 14:36

i would take that as a huge insult.

It means you are the kind of person who will ignore women’s rights for a flashy vacation

@WowIlikereallyhateyou

The idea that someone was trying to insult OP by suggesting she’d enjoy Dubai is just laughable.

Sure, Dubai isn’t everyone’s dream destination—kind of like Benidorm isn’t for everyone, though it’s still packed with Brits. But to leap to the conclusion that this means OP doesn’t care about human rights? Please....🙄

I wonder how many people here would give up their go-to takeaway if they actually looked into how many workers might be undocumented or had their passports taken.
Thought so.

FoxtonFoxton · 29/12/2024 14:40

I'd be insulted.

Well yes, obviously, and that's why I don't go on holiday to cities. And since Dubai is the subject of the thread, it has nothing to offer me that I could possibly want.

Think you are quoting the wrong person, I haven’t mentioned/touched on human rights.

However, I personally would not choose to visit.

I really don't think that's what the majority of people would be thinking of, awareness of the various issues in Dubai amongst the mumsnet demographic is way higher than in the general population.

You might mean that but the millions of people who holiday there would suggest it's not the dominant view

You wouldn't go to a city at all for that kind of thing. Its my kind of holiday too.

Imperrysmum · 29/12/2024 14:47

Glamourous, extrovert, likes shopping, likes cocktails, likes partying etc springs to mind.

Your question makes me think you may have low self esteem as if you were confident in who you are, you wouldn’t give this comment the time of day.

Survivingnotthriving24 · 29/12/2024 14:48

There's more to the place than what you'd see on the only way is Essex, but most mumsnet users aren't aware of that. Of course there's some human rights issues but that's the same for a vast many countries unfortunately.
There's beautiful bastakiya old town, spice souks, date markets, stunning mosques with interesting history, museums alongside the flash hotels and cars.

But to answer your question, probably meant as an insult from the same type of people on here slating a place they haven't visited or researched very well.

Hobbitfeet32 · 29/12/2024 14:49

I think anyone commenting on this post whether positive or negative should have to state whether they've been to Dubai.
I've been. I never set foot in a shopping mall and am the least glam person ever. You can visit other ways of life and learn from them without having to condone all aspects of them. I suspect many that are bashing Dubai here are happy to ignore other areas in their lives that impact negatively on human rights for the sake of convenience.

Anonymus89 · 29/12/2024 14:51

@WowIlikereallyhateyou I’m not quite sure what you mean about quoting wrong person, especially since you responded to me that you’ve been to the UAE many times since 2000? 🤔

Anyway, it was a generalization—most people said they wouldn’t travel to Dubai for a variety of reasons, with human rights being one of them, and that’s absolutely fine. Everyone chooses their holiday destinations based on what matters to them, and that’s completely valid.

However, I don’t agree that the person OP was talking to re Dubai intended to insult her.

OnyourbarksGSG · 29/12/2024 15:04

All style no substance. Shallow as a puddle on a hot summers day. You don’t care about the ethics/comfort as long as it looks good to other people.

i don’t think it meats anything particularly nice. I would be offended if someone’s said that to me tbh.

Tryingtokeepgoing · 29/12/2024 15:36

FoxtonFoxton · 29/12/2024 12:45

I don't really get the "jealous because you can't afford it" comments. Dubai holidays aren't particularly expensive compared to other holidays at all. You can get flights for the same price as to Spain or similar. Sometimes cheaper. People just enjoy different holidays or have different moral standards, not everything disliked has to be down to jealousy by "haters".

I agree with you. Dubai is not an expensive destination by any means, and that’s both its attraction and its downfall. There are far nicer places to go for a five star sunshine and beach holiday, but they will also be a lot more expensive than Dubai. So on the whole it attracts the champagne lifestyle / Prosecco budget type of people. Which is fine…it means the actually nice places are not cluttered up with as ,any slightly orange, slightly loud, slightly Sky TV sorts of people 🤣

Bellyblueboy · 29/12/2024 16:19

Out of interest I just priced a five star hotel in Dubai plus flights for a week. It is not an expensive holiday by any means.

I am still not tempted😊
