“You seem like you’d enjoy Dubai” what does this mean?

If a colleague said this to you, what would you think they meant?

Most of the off the charts hate for Dubai on MN originates from envy of money and a lifestyle most MN’ers could never afford.

I think you should give people some credit. I could afford it. It would be the last place I'd choose to go. The selling points are not what I'm interested in. I won't be alone in my opinions. That's fine. It's the same as the Loire Valley is famous for its chateaus and wine. Someone not interested in either of those things would not choose to go there as a destination.

DH had to go for work. He said it was an interesting place, as in unique, you saw things you don't see anywhere else. But he thought it soulless, didn't feel authentic or real. He wouldn't return unless he had to for work. There is no appeal for him.

Saying that someone seems like they might be in a demographic which tends to like X does not mean every single person who likes X is like that.

No but if they’ve been then they might know that the person would enjoy the activities that you can do.
when I went I enjoyed lots of time in the waterpark, a cultural tour including the Dubai museum that was really interesting, a trip to the grand mosque in Abu Dhabi, a desert safari, Lebanese food overlooking the fountains aswell as other bits of eating/relaxing.

BobbyBiscuits · 29/12/2024 12:39

Nobody would ever say that to me. I hope.

Yeah, tacky, blingy, big logo labels, posing for pics, editing your pics, plastic surgery, overpriced mediocre food, skyscrapers, boiling hot weather, being subordinated by men, racism, classism, homophobia, erm...think that's it.

CurlyhairedAssassin · 29/12/2024 12:40

And actually "lifestyle" is a word which means literally style of living. The people who I know who like to go to Dubai DON'T live like that all the time. They like to go and pretend that they DO though, even if it's just for a short time. If anyone's jealous of the Dubai style of living it's those type of people.

People generally aren't jealous of something they don't actually want.

AmazingBouncingFerret · 29/12/2024 09:28

It would depend on what their own opinion of Dubai is.
It could be a genuine holiday recommendation or it could be an insult.

I agree with this reply 😊

DreamW3aver · 29/12/2024 12:42

It would depend on the colleague, if it was someone who'd been to Dubai and enjoyed it and thought I had the same taste in holidays I'd assume they were making a recommendation. Or maybe the oppositte, they know we have very different tastes for example and they don't like it.

Who can say, there's no way to know what your colleague thinks

Orangeandgold · 29/12/2024 12:42

If that person likes Dubai - I don’t think it’s an insult. It probably means you like abit of glam, the “high life” and nice things. Maybe you like hype and parties. But also I know a few people that have worked out there, pretty much tax free, saved loads of money and live a very comfy life - then they come back to the UK to buy a house etc.

I have never been interested in Dubai personally but know a few friends that absolutely love it.

FoxtonFoxton · 29/12/2024 12:45

I don't really get the "jealous because you can't afford it" comments. Dubai holidays aren't particularly expensive compared to other holidays at all. You can get flights for the same price as to Spain or similar. Sometimes cheaper. People just enjoy different holidays or have different moral standards, not everything disliked has to be down to jealousy by "haters".

yipyipyop · 29/12/2024 12:45

Not complimentary

EineReiseDurchDieZeit · 29/12/2024 12:45

Depends on whether they themselves love Dubai and are recommending in which case fine but it sounds like it was delivered a bit sneeringly in which case it's a sly dig about you and your personal preferences

ARainyNightInSoho · 29/12/2024 12:50

@Jennyathemall you are way off the mark. The upper middle and upper classes laugh at the kind of people who go to Dubai on holiday. They think it's chavvy.

Blogswife · 29/12/2024 12:52

I’d take it as an insult 😂 but if you’re young then I suspect it means they think you are quite a fun person and into partying, shopping and sunbathing

Inmydreams88 · 29/12/2024 12:55

They probably go themselves and really enjoy it? Are you similar to this person?

AllThatFancyPaintsAsFair · 29/12/2024 12:57

Not a collegue but I did recently ask my hairdresser if she thought I'd like Dubai and she said if you like sunbathing and shopping, yes

Neither of those are insults so if youre tanned and wear expensive clothes maybe that's what they meant

sometimesmovingforwards · 29/12/2024 13:00

Either she thinks you’re a bit trashy.
Or everyone else thinks you and your friend are a bit trashy.
But in all honestly, you ain’t coming out of this one looking very good I’m afraid 🤣🤣

Jennyathemall · 29/12/2024 10:06

Most of the off the charts hate for Dubai on MN originates from envy of money and a lifestyle most MN’ers could never afford.

I could afford a holiday in Dubai - I just don’t want to go.

similarly Las Vegas has never been on my wish list - I went to Florida once and thought it was a tacky horror show! My favorite holiday to date has been Boston in the winter.

I am sure you would scoff at my dream holiday - I want to go kayaking in Canada followed by a week in Montreal!

The world is made up of a rich tapestry of people who enjoy different things. It’s okay to like what you like and hate what you hate😊

Turmerictolly · 29/12/2024 13:26

Do you get on with this colleague? If relations are not good then the person definitely meant it as an insult. Basically saying you are shallow and tacky unfortunately.

If it was a colleague 'friend' then they'd hopefully have meant genuinely that you would suit what it has to offer, sun, sand, shopping, bling.

cariadlet · 29/12/2024 13:49

If they have been to Dubai and enjoyed it then they probably mean that you would like whatever they enjoyed about it. I'd see it as a neutral comment (neither insult nor compliment).

If they have never been, they probably see you as a superficial person who loves shopping. Bit of an insult.

livingafulllife · 29/12/2024 14:04

I dont get how or why some would get upset with a comment.
Ive had the same said to me oh you like thailand then me yes i do.
Im in Korea at the moment and my mate messaged and said soooo you liking it i said yeah 3 time ive been here and its getting better each time back to Bangkok in spring.
And Indian in summer i suspect your be coming too.
She replied with wouldn't miss it.
Try not to over think things op.
Its just a comment.

MrsSkylerWhite · 29/12/2024 14:06

They think you have poor taste and no morals.

Anonymus89 · 29/12/2024 14:11

It’s clear some of you have never been to the UAE and it shows😂 Crystal phone covers? Really? You’re definitely confusing it with the flashy vibes of Essex or Kent gypsies. 🤣

OP, I think that person meant you’d probably like it because I’m guessing you enjoy luxury holidays, upscale hotels, and a fun night out/nice
Meals out.

WowIlikereallyhateyou · 29/12/2024 14:12

Manchesterbythesea · 29/12/2024 09:34

Probably not a compliment anyway.

This def a back handed compliment!

Augustus40 · 29/12/2024 14:13

I am not into instagram and shallow stuff but am sure I wd find Dubai interesting.

BCBird · 29/12/2024 14:14

I wouldn't see it as a compliment.

Been to UAE plenty of times thankyou.
Started going in 2000 when there were few hotels, and it was lovely. Been to Dubai / Abu Dhabi / Oman lots of times but not now, for sooo many reasons!
