Nope not me and I'm still waiting to find out what someone has against the Snowman but they haven't come back - I really can't fathom it

If you're not going to quote who said these things, then how on earth is anyone meant to know it was another poster who said it? Confused

All you said was...

@Purplebunnie · Today 12:18

Harry Potter
Child neglect/abuse - Dursleys to Harry
Bullying - Luna items hidden around the school, Harry during Goblet of Fire - badges, Snape by James etc there is so much bullying
Racism - house elves, goblins, muggles
Slavery - house elves
I'm sure there is more

I'm not getting the Snowman either

You mentioned nothing about someone else having a problem with this lot.

People aren't psychic!

They still make films about these things though.

There are still films made explicitly with themes of racism, slavery, bullying and neglect.

It would only potentially be cancelled if the themes themselves were glorified.

I think I have touched a nerve a nerve with mentioning 'The Bridges of Madison County'. Yours is the third condescending response I have received on my post.

I will state again, what I have a problem with is the excusing and romanticizing of their behavior.

People are just pointing out that films about adulterous affairs in which the lovers are not ‘punished’ or depicted as morally bankrupt, are just as likely to be made in 2024 as in 1945, when Brief Encounter was made.

You seem to have misunderstood the OP’s question, which was about films that would not be made now. Adulterous affairs have not become some kind of taboo topic.

Blazing Saddles.Made sorts by a Jew, Mel Brooks, but takes the piss out of all sorts of prejudice.

Ironically, it's films that poke fun at racism, sexism etc that wouldn't be allowed today,

Edited

I completely agree. The point about ‘Til Death Us Do Part”, on TV was that racism was mocked and Alf Garnet was shown to be unreasonable and stupid. In no way did it present such outdated and irrational views in a positive light.

Most people here aren't old enough to remember The Singing Ringing Tree which started as an East German film and appeared on UK TV dubbed into English. A lovely film but it has a teenage princess abducted by a bear. Also has a wicked dwarf.

I've never seen the original, but I presume it must have been the inspiration for the Goodness Gracious Me sketch about the Binginga Bonginga Hoinginga Boinginga Tree (or something like that)?!

Uricon2 · 29/12/2024 13:16

TammyJones · 29/12/2024 12:38

@FizzyBisto

Also not a film, but there's no way Some Mothers Do 'Ave 'Em would ever be made now. The whole premise is around laughing at an utterly 'stupid' man, who, with modern eyes, very much seems that he would be diagnosed with learning difficulties and/or other conditions, and (we would hope) given support rather than be ridiculed.

########

Would Mr Bean be seen in the same way?

Yes, and also Laurel and Hardy (especially Stan Laurel)? Norman Wisdom? Chaplin? Similarities in (very cleverly worked out) ineptitude for slapstick effect.

FS was a much loved character, like the others mentioned above and there was a strong sense of rooting for him and laughing with him, not at him.

I loved this ...beautiful ending.
Never forgot the message about kindness.

They didn't intend to make Alf Garnett a hero, but to some people he was. Warren Mitchell proudly used to tell stories of how people (normally men) would come up to him and say "good on you Alf! You're telling it like it is!" Mitchell would then respond with a witty put down telling the fan what an idiot he was.

Mitchell never seemed to realise that for every racist he actually saw and put right in the street, there were thousands more racists seeing Garnett's terrible language and attitudes apparently being approved and magnified on prime time TV.

Sanjeev Bhaskar said that the playgrounds were always worse the day after TDUDP was on the telly.

Nowhere to the same extent or seriousness, but Harry Enfield's Loadsamoney character also had that effect on some.

He was obviously meant to be an unpleasant, pathetic character; but some people adopted him as their hero!

South Pacific. I know not originally a film but went to see it at the theatre a couple of years ago. The racism, misogyny and CSE!!! There's even a song glorifying CSE 'Younger than Springtime are You' Seriously creepy.

I am not commenting on CSE

But you do realise the story is based in the 1940s

What would you expect?

The Eastern European films and cartoons on TV in the 60s were very weird.

CountTo10 · 29/12/2024 13:43

@Nanny0gg This is a thread about films that wouldn't be made now and having not seen the film in over 50 years I just remembered the sound track and not much of the story. Certainly didn't fully grasp the story preceding the song about CSE which is presented as a love song but is between a man and a child!

Wintershealing · 29/12/2024 13:43

Bridget jones. I was watching it the other night and imagine nowadays people watching a boss email his female employee about her skirt etc the way he did! Then shag her, cheat, and expect her to carry on working there! Also portraying her as fat, making out a 32 year old woman is pathetic for being single (and making it look like single 30 somethings are depressed/heavy smoking/vodka loving saddos singing "all by myself").

I thought that at the time.
And didn't think she was fat...Infact in seeing the actress , some what later, having reverted back to her 'normal' weight , thought she looked too thin.

Shirley Temple was badly abused during the making of her films so that makes them unwatchable.

Yes, actually after posting that I got curious about how she was treated on set being such a small child, and did some googling, ugh horrible.

This is an odd one because you're right, I don't think it would happen in film and yet that's not to say it wouldn't happen in real life and indeed you read about all sorts going on in the papers, prison wardens having sex with inmates and so on. Not saying that's normal, but people do have office affairs and behave unsuitably. It's like the movies can't reflect or depict that kind of stuff of any hue any more, it's as if the effect of LinkedIn is everywhere, it is all sanitised.

I picked up the book earlier this year, I remembered loving it back in the 90s by my god it hasn’t aged well!

Exactly this. It illustrated what actually happened then. This happened, this is how it was then, and nothing, no amount of outrage about them showing racism and misogyny etc etc in films and TV shows from 50+ years ago, is going to alter the fact that it all happened, and was shown then. Why are people trying to pretend it didn't happen, by axing all the bits they don't wish to see/find unsuitable/unsavoury etc...?

Showing these films and TV shows etc, and deleting all the scenes that are classed as 'unsuitable' in the 2020s is utterly pathetic. Leave them as they are. If the Gen X-ers and Gen Zs can't bear to watch such things, don't watch them!!!

FFS, leave things alone, and stop (as a pp said,) re-writing history!

As for Rita, Sue, and Bob too... Yes that was grim viewing; a dirty pig of a middle aged man shagging two 16 year old school girls.

But it DID used to happen back then. (Probably still does happen now and again.) Nothing is ever going to change that. Also, the 2 girls were 16. They were over the age of consent. Still grim though! 😬

I caught the end of 'Carry on up the Khyber' on the TV yesterday and some censor had removed the line 'that'll teach 'em for banning turbans on the buses'.
Why?

God knows. We have the music channels on a lot and they censor those as well. It’s so frustrating.

The song ‘Younger than Springtime’ has nothing whatever to do with CSE. The musical South Pacific is about love that happens despite racial separation. In the move, Lieutenant Cable falls in love with Liat, the daughter of Bloody Mary, on the island of Bali H'ai. The song is performed in the first act when Cable confesses his love for Liat after spending a passionate night together, and the song shows that love can happen regardless of the racial separation that was prevalent in America at the time.

There is so much utter ignorance and assumption on this thread, it’s shocking.
