Blazing Saddles.Made sorts by a Jew, Mel Brooks, but takes the piss out of all sorts of prejudice.

Ironically, it's films that poke fun at racism, sexism etc that wouldn't be allowed today,

Big! The bit where the woman is essentially seducing a child makes me feel so uncomfortable

FionnulaTheCooler · 28/12/2024 22:52

I recently introduced my DD to Bugsy Malone, and thought as I watched a 12 year old Jodie Foster gyrate against a wall while singing flirtatiously that it definitely wouldn't get made these days.

Hairspray - the blacker the berry, the sweeter the juice, negros and coloureds? Just no!

All those old Westerns, that depicted native American people as a bunch of Red Indian savages.

In the mornings where I live they have reruns of Bonanza & Gunsmoke and they have a warning ahead of time saying “you might be offended by these old depictions.” Or something like that.
And wow they are offensive, not just of the Native Americans, but of the western culture too. Every single person on them is a stereotype. And white people in bad makeup play the Native Americans — it’s bad. Comically bad.

Taxi driver and Blue Lagoon- wouldn't be made now with under age actresses!

The dark crystal and NeverEnding Story wouldn't be children's films now! As young kids in the 80's, we watched them over and over, but having seen them again recently- there are some really creepy/scary scenes going on! 😬

Chicheguevara · 28/12/2024 22:57

An American in Paris.
That felt uncomfortable to watch as an adult. The soundtrack is just gorgeous but the way the main character pursued that poor lass was just not on.

Superbad
Overall it's hilarious but many parts of it have aged badly, the disgust around periods made me cringe
Also, American Pie

Not so much creepy, but Artax’s death has haunted me ever since I first watched TNES aged about 5!

Pretty baby and blue lagoon. I haven't watched either but I watched a documentary with Brooke Sheilds talking about them recently and they both sound disgusting.

Yes to Pretty Woman. I'm watching it now.

Pretty Woman. I love it because I'm the right age for when it came out, but the actual story is awful. We're meant to be happy she ends up with the guy who thought it was ok to pay for a prostitute for a week.

This!!
It seems to still be a classic as we grew up with it, but it's awful. He hires a much younger prostitute and then they end up together, so gross.

Goldfinger-you’d never have a leading woman called Pussy Galore in 2024!

Yul Brynner doing yellow face in The King and I

Pretty much every 1970s sit com.

All those old Westerns, that depicted native American people as a bunch of Red Indian savages.

"Our nation was born in genocide when it embraced the doctrine that the original American, the Indian, was an inferior race. Even before there were large numbers of Negroes on our shores, the scar of racial hatred had already disfigured colonial society. From the sixteenth century forward, blood flowed in battles over racial supremacy. We are perhaps the only nation which tried as a matter of national policy to wipe out its indigenous population. Moreover, we elevated that tragic experience into a noble crusade. Indeed, even today we have not permitted ourselves to reject or to feel remorse for this shameful episode. Our literature, our films, our drama, our folklore all exalt it."
