Anyone else knocked down by this Christmas bug?

Went away for Christmas at luxury hotel. DH started to feel ropey Xmas eve. By Xmas day he had full blown temperature, aches, chills, cough. Had to find pharmacy on Xmas day to try and get something stronger for him.

it’s hit me full-pelt now. It feels like it’s in my throat and ears and I’m raging hot and cold. Taking Lemsip tabs and ibuprofen and codeine but anything else I could or should be doing? My throat is so painful I can’t even cough.

I have about 12 people turning up for a second Xmas at 2pm and tempted to just cancel it or leave it to my DH who appears better!

God I’d cancel! I thought the point of going away for Xmas was to avoid all that!

Hope you feel better soon.

Ihavenoclu · 28/12/2024 08:51

Yes me. I have not felt this rotten for years. Chills, headache, throat burning, cough and ear ache. Just horrid.

Pasithean · 28/12/2024 08:53

We are both on our third round of it. I have compromised immunity and cannot take any remedies at all. It’s awful.

Cancel for sure....germs spread like wild fire...safer for your guests and easier for you. They will understand x

Gliblet · 28/12/2024 08:54

Manky, isn't it? Mine held off just long enough for me to do all the shopping and posting and wrapping and cooking, then appeared on Christmas night 🙄 Saline nasal rinses and gargling with salt water have helped, running a little mister thing at night with some olbas oil in the water, and I'm using balm tissues and regularly putting vaseline on my nose and top lip so I don't look like I've got leprosy.

Oh, and personally I'd much rather someone tell me they've got something contagious and let me avoid it then try and 'be brave' and give it to me as an extra present...

kiraric · 28/12/2024 08:55

I caught this at the beginning of December and still don't feel 100%

Canyoudigityesyoucan · 28/12/2024 08:57

It’s absolutely vile I’ve never felt so shit. I cried at 4am on Boxing Day morning in the bath as I felt like I’d prefer someone to smother me than actually feel like this!

I’ve not done the food shop yet so I think I’m cancelling

I know, we were both so looking forward to it. Literally had to stay in bed xmas day and not enjoy the luxury buffet dinner we had paid for because we both felt so rough!

Yep ! I ended up in hospital with pneumonia so look after yourself

Tinytigertail · 28/12/2024 09:01

Yes, youngest daughter started on Christmas Eve, I started on Boxing Day and husband last night, it's horrible!

PrioritisePleasure24 · 28/12/2024 09:02

i work in a&e i’ve caught two things back to back. Staff been off sick, knocking everyone out. My ears still aren’t right with still popping. My first illness was disgusting with how much thick green secretions i had. i couldn’t hear properly for two weeks.

Current bugs testing positive on our unit FLU A is the worst one and Rsv, throw a bit of covid too! A lot of people with temps and feeling really unwell are likely flu. Please cancel or at least pre warn your visitors! I would be cancelling! .

Phunkychicken · 28/12/2024 09:03

DH has had this all Christmas and now on double antibiotics, oral for pneumonia and topical for impetigo up his nose from all the blowing.

Have known him 30 years and have never seen him ill like this, think it’s actual flu which has taken a turn. Had to put off todays visitors as don’t want to pass on to them as older and about to go on much longed for holiday.

Hope you all feel better soon

Pandasnacks · 28/12/2024 09:05

Cancel it! Why would you want to pass this on to your guests? I’d be seriously pissed off if you were that unwell and didn’t pre warn me before passing it on to me for new year.

Can you rearrange for new year? Hopefully it passes after today if DH is feeling better now, it sounds awful. Fingers crossed you feel better soon OP

Canyoudigityesyoucan · 28/12/2024 09:07

Plan was for DH who is better to do it and I’ll stay upstairs but I’ve not even done the food shop so we’re cancelling. Gutted but we can try and rearrange. A much needed Christmas of relaxation has gone out the window, absolutely typical!

WafflingDreamer · 28/12/2024 09:08

Please don't have people over particularly if they are older or vulnerable. Flu A is really bad this year and it's making lots of people very unwell. Cancel and rearrange for another time.

PamandBluebell · 28/12/2024 09:09

My husband developed this just before Christmas, felt better then crashingly worse. I woke up yesterday with agonising aches and pains. Had horrific shivers too, now my sinuses are throbbing and all my teeth hurt. Its horrific and we are both so miserable.

Toohardtofindaproperusername · 28/12/2024 09:21

Please cancel. Don't spread this to others if you can help it. Its awful.
Take care if yourselves...rest a lot and drink a lot of water

It will pass but it takes a long time

RosemaryRabbit · 28/12/2024 09:23

I started with a sore throat on Xmas eve which came out as a full on cold Boxing Day evening with streaming eyes and nose and sneezing. I would say this is a classic "bad cold" though not a flu. I've had flu and covid vaccines this year. I think I'm getting off lightly so far, loads of people I know have had nastier viruses than this and a full on flu even when vaccinated.

BobbinThreadbare123 · 28/12/2024 09:28

This is the third day I'll be losing to this horrible cold. It's not flu because I can walk about but wow it is bad! The sore throat is insane.I've got so much to do as well, plus a stressful return to work. I won't be rested 😔
I'm also immune-compromised so it's going to take me ages to get right once it's gone.

Enterthedragonqueen · 28/12/2024 09:29

Why didn't you cancel as soon as your dh came down with it because you don't want to expose your guests to the flu? There's no way I'd be in any fit state to cook for 12 guests with those symptoms.

madaboutpurple · 28/12/2024 09:32

Ah I hope you recover soon. Cancelling is best and rearrange it for a future date. You need time to get over it. Best wishes.

popandchoc · 28/12/2024 09:37

I started with a sore throat and head ache Boxing Day and then started aching yesterday . Don’t want to get out of bed this morning . Thankfully my kids are 9 and 13 so can sort themselves some food if needed .
i would definitely cancel in your situation .

Its the flu, bog standard influenza, it's gone absolutely nuts this year and is felling people left right and centre - ask any GP, they are flooded out with cases.

Its easy to tell from a cold in that it comes on somewhat rapidly and has a high temperature associated with it for a good few days, leaves you washed out afterwards.

Flu doesn't stop you walking about, that's a myth, I've just had the flu and worked (at home), every day, very miserable, but not incapacitating.
