Anyone else knocked down by this Christmas bug?

Went away for Christmas at luxury hotel. DH started to feel ropey Xmas eve. By Xmas day he had full blown temperature, aches, chills, cough. Had to find pharmacy on Xmas day to try and get something stronger for him.

it’s hit me full-pelt now. It feels like it’s in my throat and ears and I’m raging hot and cold. Taking Lemsip tabs and ibuprofen and codeine but anything else I could or should be doing? My throat is so painful I can’t even cough.

I have about 12 people turning up for a second Xmas at 2pm and tempted to just cancel it or leave it to my DH who appears better!

I came down with this a few weeks ago (despite having had the flu jab). I recovered slowly, felt ok for a week, and now I’ve got a stinking cold. I feel for anyone who’s got this! It’s unpleasant, and it’s made Christmas difficult!

EdgeofSeventy · 28/12/2024 18:46

I'm day 2 of this. No sore throat but zero balance, chills, temperature and feeling like I've done 12 rounds with Frank Bruno.
I have cancelled tomorrow's festivities.
Germy inconsiderate bastards 🥵😡😤

AmazingGraze · 29/12/2024 04:00

I don’t think it’s flu in my case. It feels very much like Covid. Normally with flu I would be in bed for a week. This has just been unpleasant and debilitating.

I didn't think I was doing too badly, I've just had a couple of days of congestion and feeling a bit dopey. The chills and nausea arrived last night 🙄

Marmite27 · 29/12/2024 09:48

I think I’ve had a very mild version. I’m usually a cold person, I’ve had bouts of being boiling (it’s not my age, that was tested recently!). Youngest DC got out of bed Christmas Day night absolutely dripping with sweat too. They’ve just started with a cough after junior Parkrun this morning.

Cone to think of it, I’ve had headaches on and off too, I put it down to noisy Christmas gifts!

Marmite27 · 29/12/2024 09:50

I’d say my balance is off too, I fell off a stool Christmas Eve and ended up flat on my back, then missed the bottom stair step yesterday. It’s manageable though!

Canyoudigityesyoucan · 29/12/2024 09:54

It’s not COVID: we tested as had spare tests. Day 5 now and still vile. Sore throat and also my gums and I am full of ulcers. Entire body aches, snotty as hell. Cancelled party yesterday and was due to go do an outdoor activity in the 2 degree weather for 3 hours today so have cancelled that too. No energy. This is hell!

Isn’t it awful. I threw up last night. Can’t stand for more than a minute. My cough has now started, my husband sounds dreadful, he is barely sleeping and giving off an air of doom. I am so fed up.

whenemmafallsinlove · 29/12/2024 09:59

Important to remember the flu jab isn't only about avoiding getting sick, it's about modifying how sick you do get if/when you catch flu.
Flu is a straight up,killer. So if you've felt vile for a few days then got better without hospital intervention it's done it's job.

popandchoc · 29/12/2024 10:30

Slept awfully last night, just aching everywhere. Had a high temp when i woke up but has gone down a bit now after some paracetamol.

Ihavenoclu · 29/12/2024 17:55

I am really struggling. Does anyone have an intense ear ache as well? If so any remedies?

Canyoudigityesyoucan · 29/12/2024 20:30

None unfortunately. The ear ache for me is only relieved by a cotton bud putting pressure in my ear weirdly.

My throat is red raw from coughing and now when I cough I’m sick (delightful)

Today I thought I’d run a hot bath with some Vicks vapour rub dissolved into the hot water stream but all it did is make me and my bath tub so greasy and now I have to clean the bath and quite frankly that in itself makes me want to die.

Yep ! I ended up in hospital with pneumonia so look after yourself

Me too! Had three types of antibiotic back to back before it subsided. Horrible, at one point I didn’t care what happened to me I felt so ill

mouth ulcers are a feature of RSV. Poor you, be very careful, mine turned into pneumonia and I ended up admitted to hospital.

Every third thread on Mumsnet is about this. There's clearly something horrific about

TheFairyCaravan · 29/12/2024 20:45

I’ve come down with it too.

We got home from spending Christmas with DS2, DDIL & DGS yesterday evening. I woke up in the night with a pounding headache and a cough. I got up this morning, had a shower but ended up back in bed where I’ve spent all day either sweating, shivering, or sleeping. I can hardly walk for the pains in my legs.

DS2 text me first thing to tell me 1yo DGS has got it too.

I hope everyone is on the mend soon

Theeasypeasywoman · 29/12/2024 20:53

Yes me ! Just before Christmas. My toddler brought a really nasty virus from preschool and I was badly affected. It wasn't like normal flu whoch I usually catch since she started a preschool. In my case, The cough was brutal and constant and I didn't sleep for 4-5 nights straight. At the end DH forced me to go to Out of hours GP (I had low blood pressure few weeks ago and fainted and had a concussion due to bacterial infection in blood. Again caught it from my preschooler) and he gave me Antibiotics which actually worked wonders. Call your GP, In my case It was Chest infection and got treated before it got more severe. Don't wait for cough or cold to go away on its own. I went to GP after having a week old cough but this cough was no normal. I haven't had anything like this before.

YoureAMeanOneMrGrinch · 29/12/2024 20:56

My 22 month old had it just before Christmas and was still ropey over Christmas, then me and my partner started with it on Friday and it's floored us both which isn't great with two kids to look after

DelphiniumBlue · 29/12/2024 21:13

I've been ill since 17th December. Just beginning to feel better now. Don't know what it was, I've had flu and Covid jabs, it did feel like one of those, not quite as bad as COVID for me, but I haven't been able to leave the house for 10 days!
Cough, very very snotty, dodgy stomach, very lethargic.
DH seems to have dodged it, 2 out of 3 visiting DC have succumbed but they are recovering much faster than me.

Ihavenoclu · 30/12/2024 00:20

It is just so awful. I can't remember ever being this ill before.

Canyoudigityesyoucan · 30/12/2024 09:07

Woken up and now my chest sounds like popping candy. Fantastic! I had a virtual GP appointment when it started to see if they could give me anything stronger but they couldn’t. So now I need to try and get an in person appointment if this is a chest infection or something more serious. Still cannot drink a lot as throat red sore.

Call GP and Ask for face to face appointment OP. They need to hear your chest and give you antibiotics. Don't wait till it gets worse. Tell them whatever you need to to get an appointment.

Annoyingly I’m not at home. And not easy to get home (wasn’t planning on going home until 6th) so not registered with GP locally hence why I called my virtual GP.

I'm so ill. I'm just assuming it's flu and I need to let it run its course. I can't get out of bed. I'm not sure at what stage you need to phone a doctor? I started feeling ropey on Christmas Eve I think.
