Anyone else knocked down by this Christmas bug?

Went away for Christmas at luxury hotel. DH started to feel ropey Xmas eve. By Xmas day he had full blown temperature, aches, chills, cough. Had to find pharmacy on Xmas day to try and get something stronger for him.

it’s hit me full-pelt now. It feels like it’s in my throat and ears and I’m raging hot and cold. Taking Lemsip tabs and ibuprofen and codeine but anything else I could or should be doing? My throat is so painful I can’t even cough.

I have about 12 people turning up for a second Xmas at 2pm and tempted to just cancel it or leave it to my DH who appears better!

Definitely cancel without any hesitation.

Am I right - I think I heard from nurse friends- that the flu vaccine mix hasn't modelled reality well this year so it's not being very effective.

Yes I'm sort of over the other side now, still not right but better and have been working and carrying on as normal.
My daughters has turned to bronchitis

My GP told me the same, they got the odds wrong this year and it has failed pretty conclusively, its only about 40% effective in a good year, and this certainly is not that alas.

I was in the office on the 23rd. Someone on my team was unwell and we made sure she went home. Only 2 people were in the next office and one said she was only in because she would have needed a sick note had she not made an appearance that day. One of the people I have coffee breaks with when I'm in the office has been WhatsApp ing periodically to chart how ill they have been. It seems like a nasty virus. Hope you feel better soon OP.

Conniethecatapillar · 28/12/2024 09:55

Yes day 9 here, it's been awful. Get well soon OP

CandlesOrangesRedribbon · 28/12/2024 09:56

@PrioritisePleasure24 what is flu a a type of strain?
I've had my jab but apparently it's not good this year?
Did health care people get offered a jab?

Op definitely cancel it's so contagious and I'd be very unhappy if you hosted with all those germs around

WinkyTinky · 28/12/2024 09:56

Please cancel! Your guests will thank you for it, I guarantee. It hit me suddenly on 3rd Dec and I felt so ill I was on the floor with my head out the back door waiting to be sick. I have just felt awful and have had three weeks off work, having only ever had one or two days off per year previously for bugs or whatever. It is really bad this year, don't spread it!

There a 3 main subtypes of flu, A, B & C, C doesn't make you very ill so doesn't count. A & B jostle for superiority. of A & B there are multiple mutations, exactly as there are with covid.

Onand · 28/12/2024 09:59

Definitely cancel unless your guests want Covid. Hope you’re better soon OP!

TubeScreamer · 28/12/2024 10:05

Of course you should cancel! Nobody will want to run the risk of catching it or think badly of you.

Soiltypes · 28/12/2024 10:08

ive got temperature, chills, and coughing , its very odd

RabbitsRock · 28/12/2024 10:09

Really wish I’d had the flu jab! Will book it.

allnewname · 28/12/2024 10:11

Yes, feeling rubbish, chills, fever, chesty cough, pounding head. Cancelled our plans as a) I'd be rubbish company and b) I don't want to spread it to my friends.

slightlydistrac · 28/12/2024 10:14

Yep. I've had it 8 days now, and dd's partner came down with it Christmas Eve.

All the more frustrating because I had covid over Christmas last year.

That's not odd, that's classical flu, right out of the textbook.

It didn't work this year, they picked the wrong strain😞

Bellyblueboy · 28/12/2024 10:17

I am on week two of this. Earache has eased but cough is now dreadful - really rattley and painful.

I took two weeks leave over Christmas and had amazing plans. Cancelled them all

Silverbellie · 28/12/2024 10:24

NHS. I was jabbed a month ago. Utterly useless, it went through the house, office and wards like wild fire. Swiftly followed by Noro

i ment in the sense of usually i get a mild version of these but this bug is omg

AlisonDonut · 28/12/2024 10:27

Had it for 3 days, better for 3, then again for 3 days, better for 2, then again for 2 days and then intermittently one or two days at a time for the last 10.

I caught it off our neighbour who was over for a week from the UK. I was ill within 3 hours of giving her a hug.

BarbaraWoodlouse · 28/12/2024 10:31

You can get PCR tests for flu now the same as the COVID ones from Tesco etc. at least found it helpful to know what I was dealing with and gave me “permission” to rest up and legitimately cancel all plans.

DH also finally took me seriously and vacated the bed though he shared with me on the first two - presumably most infectious - nights. He didn’t catch it though and we are crediting the flu jab for re that.

PamandBluebell · 28/12/2024 16:46

I have just done a Covid test to see whatever this hell-bug is. Its not Covid so has to be flu (it does feel like flu), although i had a flu jab… i am hoping if it is flu, the jab i had may, at least, lessen the severity. My temperature is going up again and the shivers are back.

BeAzureAnt · 28/12/2024 16:57

I got a miserable cold on the 20th and am just now about mended…slight coughing only. But it was fever, chills, fatigue, sore throat, coughing, runny nose. Really miserable. I hope all of you out there feel better very soon! And OP, go back to bed and cancel.

AmazingGraze · 28/12/2024 17:00

I got it just before Xmas and it’s ruined Xmas. The fatigue is absolutely brutal .

WinkyTinky · 28/12/2024 17:55

@BarbaraWoodlouse yes, although I felt absolutely terrible, I did have permission for once to just go to bed and delegate things to other people. Not all the things, but at least some for a change! It was almost a treat to get up with the kids, get them to school, then come back home and climb into bed.
