Anyone else knocked down by this Christmas bug?

Went away for Christmas at luxury hotel. DH started to feel ropey Xmas eve. By Xmas day he had full blown temperature, aches, chills, cough. Had to find pharmacy on Xmas day to try and get something stronger for him.

it’s hit me full-pelt now. It feels like it’s in my throat and ears and I’m raging hot and cold. Taking Lemsip tabs and ibuprofen and codeine but anything else I could or should be doing? My throat is so painful I can’t even cough.

I have about 12 people turning up for a second Xmas at 2pm and tempted to just cancel it or leave it to my DH who appears better!

I woke up with a mild sore throat on Christmas Day - felt a bit under the weather but nothing too bad. It very slowly developed (making me think, cold or covid rather than flu) over 4 days into a head full of cotton wool, stuffy/runny nose, rumbling chesty cough, and ear pain. No fever or body aches though, all the way up to day 5 yesterday, then last night bam - chills, back pain, lost sense of smell and taste.

Day 6 today and I'm in bed, but paracetamol seems to help. Can't decide whether to bother with testing for covid.

I'm in the midst of a version of this - came down to stay with friends on the 27th and on the 28th started to feel ropey, but yesterday was the pits and apparently can be tracked back to some friends that they spent time with a few days ago. I have to drive for five hours to get home later today which isn't ideal but I had a mammoth lie in this morning and am chugging hot water with lemon, ginger and honey like it is going out of fashion. Looking forward to being in my own bed tonight as I am WFH tomorrow, so will just be taking it very slowly. Sending sympathy and solidarity to anyone else feeling like they've been run over. Ugh.

Yep, I was in bed all Xmas Day. DH has it now and the eldest is sick. The in laws are over from France and due here for new year. DH says will tell them as a warning but there is no way they won't come. Absolutely dreading it.

I'm over the cough etc, but the tiredness is relentless, I just sit down and fall straight asleep.

You can register with a local GP as a temporary patient. 111 might be able to help you with this if you’re struggling.

ETA : also might be worth googling a local prescribing pharmacy. If it’s above what they can provide they’ll sign post you.

Just wondering how everyone is feeling?
Here for solidarity! I started on Boxing Day with this bug/flu whatever it is and still feeling rough - wiped out, no appetite, disgusting cough etc etc. Fever and chills have stopped thankfully.
Thought I’d be feeling better by now but no. How is everyone else doing?

PamandBluebell · 01/01/2025 12:39

I also started on Boxing Day, feeling a bit better today. Had to walk the dog and that felt incredibly exhausting! Still coughing and just feel very wiped out. Not really very hungry and feel like Christmas has just passed by and i have been in bed!

frick · 01/01/2025 12:47

I know… it’s been like Groundhog Day! I keep wondering if I blast of fresh air would be a good idea but the outside world seems a bit out of reach stil!

TheCrenchinglyMcQuaffenBrothers · 01/01/2025 12:55

Feeling awful. I had to leave NYE party at 11pm last night as I suddenly felt so ill, nauseous and hot and like I was going to fall over (only had one glass of fizz btw!). Came on that quick, it was weird. Now sweating like the proverbial, my throat is so sore from coughing it’s also making my ears hurt and I’m convinced I can taste blood. What is it? I assumed RSV? Not Covid for me.

BobbyBiscuits · 01/01/2025 13:01

Don't spread it round. It's horrible isn't it. Me and DH have it. I am at the tail end. Still a bit feverish and snotty and had horrible sinusitis. Started on 23rd. I'm hoping next few days I'll be clear. I could barely taste my Xmas dinner, devastating! Wishing you a swift recovery x

frick · 01/01/2025 13:01

Oh dear… get to bed and stay there! Hope it passes quickly. I’m assuming mine is plain old flu 🤷🏻‍♀️ Mine came on really fast as well, and had sweating/shakes for first 48 hours.

I know exactly what you mean by the outside world still seems out if reach. If I sit and do nothing, I don’t feel to bad. Soon as I try to do something normal, the coughing returns. I have got my appetite back though, although small portions. Stupidly felt upset though last night when after the Chinese takeaway, we were one short of Magnums.

popandchoc · 01/01/2025 16:55

Still feeling rubbish here . Think I’m day 6 . Today my head and throat are really sore , not helped by the coughing . Painkillers don’t seem to be helping much .

Arlanymor · 01/01/2025 17:17

Day four for me, luckily the wheeziness has diminished somewhat but the productive cough is hanging on in there and waking me up in the night as are the hot and cold chills still. Didn’t bother getting up today, worked from my bed a bit, slept late. Setting my alarm for very early tomorrow and will start with a hot bath and see how I am feeling. Sending lots of sympathy to others as this is just horrible.

BeAzureAnt · 01/01/2025 17:49

Caught it on the 20th and today am finally feeling normal. Slight cough, but could go out on the daily walk, sleeping Ok, and not fatigued. I spent several days in bed until my fever broke, and then gradually was on the mend. I hope everyone on here feels better very soon.

Gingervitis · 01/01/2025 20:05

Day 8 for me today (started with sore throat Christmas Day, struggled through but ended up in bed most of day 6, sleeping and popping paracetamol). Feeling tons better now, although still easily fatigued - yesterday I had a shower which wiped me out for a bit, but finally today I took the dogs for a proper field run when it stopped raining - had to have a little rest when we got home. Messed about with the fish tank for a bit this afternoon and had to keep sitting down!

Appetite returned properly yesterday, and smell and taste finally made a cautious reappearance this afternoon, hurrah. It was only gone about 3 days so maybe it was just sinus congestion and not covid. I had been around 2 babies with RSV? DH made us a mini Christmas dinner tonight and as I had to fight through semi-nausea to eat a little on Christmas Day, tonight's was DELICIOUS. 😊

I do still have that raging tickle low in my throat which is giving me the 40-a-day-B&H-habit rumbly cough, it's vaguely productive but nothing relieves the tickle or stops that endless throat crackle/wheeze.

Slightly worryingly, my throat feels a little sore again tonight, right in the snorer bit back where it all started so not from coughing...it can bloody well do one.

BeAzureAnt · 01/01/2025 22:37

I’m glad you are on the mend @Gingervitis I hope you get your energy back soon.

marmaladeandpeanutbutter · 01/01/2025 22:49

I was sick in October (with antibiotics) and sick in November, both cold/flu /chest affairs. Hopefully I'm now covered! 🙏

Gliblet · 01/01/2025 22:54

@Gingervitis very similar, day 8 and it's finally starting to lift after several days of feeling like I've been run over by something. Still ridiculously tired though, my eyes hurt, my sinuses are still full of glue and every now and then my legs go wobbly.

goonie33 · 01/01/2025 23:00

We've been on/off ill since the beginning of December. Each time I think it's going it seems to come back with a vengeance a few days later. Can't decide if it's the same thing or just new bugs coming in from nursery.

The worst bit for me has been headache and pain and soreness behind my eyes. Constantly sneezing and a very barky cough. Still managed to eat and drink my way through the past few weeks so I haven't been as unwell as some of you poor lot. But it's definitely taken the shine off Xmas. Hopefully a sober January with lots of veg will start to fight it off. I haven't been looking after myself which doesn't help in shifting these things.

yamafi · 01/01/2025 23:05

Me and my grandson have had it since Christmas day, grandson needed antibiotics which have helped him hugely. I still have a cough with a crackling/popping chest, will call doc on Friday if the mucus doesn't shift. We caught it from my daughter who ended up with bronchitis and on antibiotics and steroids. I'm fed up now 🫤

WinkyTinky · 01/01/2025 23:40

Day 28 here. I keep feeling almost recovered then have a relapse. Somehow I have managed to run 21 miles in the last 8 days to achieve a target I've been aiming for, but now I can feel the low down sore throat that I had right at the beginning......am I getting it again?! Or another strain??? Please no!!!!! Days 1-5 of flu were horrendous, then the chest infection came at about day 8 and I started antibiotics, and at that point I started to feel less ill and could eat again, but even climbing the stairs was wiping me out. More antibiotics and steroids after that, which made me feel better but I seemed to get to a level of almost ok but not quite. I'm still coughing and have got a chest x-ray in the morning to see if anything is going on. I've been reading about 'walking pneumonia' and I'm convinced that's what it is. I am working on putting back on the weight I lost from not eating. I am down 9 pounds on my normal weight and feel really skinny 😫 When you can, get out for some fresh air, as I feel that's the main thing that has helped me. Get well soon everyone!

allnewname · 02/01/2025 15:16

Day 28?! Ooh that's terrible. I started on Boxing Day, never really got that full on cold (though DH did) but went through the fever and chills joy. Been left with a really tight chest and cough. Managed to get a tel appt with GP on Monday who prescribed an inhaler (don't normally get asthma, had hoped for ABs) which doesn't seem to have helped much. Tried to go back to work today but didn't last long, don't seem to able to breathe enough air.

WinkyTinky · 02/01/2025 15:34

@allnewname Yes that's exactly how I felt - tight chest and only able to breathe to about 80% capacity. I still feel like that now, but I haven't used the inhaler much. Maybe I should use it more. I am at work but breathing in cold air and don't feel great 😣
