Panettone - Just why ????

Every year boss has handed out panettone & Prosecco as a Christmas gift - which duly gets shared (ok so technically regifted) at friends Christmas drinks. Never actually tried it as best before date seems to suggest it has nuclear waste grade preservatives…

Is it just me that thinks pannetone is the modern day equivalent of lily of the valley talcum powder ????

Agree. I've been gifted one, it's going to my parents' house.

soupfiend · 21/12/2024 19:31

If you get a good one its lovely but the problem is you cant tell.

DappledThings · 21/12/2024 19:31

Love a bit of panettone. You can send it to me.

OriginalUsername2 · 21/12/2024 19:32

I almost picked up a small one in Sainsbury’s to see what the fuss is about! The ingredients say sponge with raisins, which sounds bland and pointless.

neverknowinglyunreasonable · 21/12/2024 19:32

I feel like maybe you should at least try it before posting this....

tuvamoodyson · 21/12/2024 19:32

Love it…toasted/bread and butter pudding…delicious!

BeingATwatItsABingThing · 21/12/2024 19:32

I quite like panettone. Haven’t had one in ages though so might have to get one.

Girasoli · 21/12/2024 19:32

There's panettone and there's panettone, the ones my cousin bakes herself (patisserie chef in Italy) are leagues away from supermarket ones.

In the UK the M&S and Waitrose ones in tins are both quite nice. Pandoro's my favourite though.

TeenToTwenties · 21/12/2024 19:33

Love panettone. Has to be fresh. Tear off the outside first and eat it, then the rest.

Builtlikeafliplop · 21/12/2024 19:33

You know a lot of mumsnetters won’t remember Lilly of the valley talc 😄 but I totally agree with you, I can’t stand Panatonne and can’t understand the love for it, this dried up piece of fruit loaf.

HPandthelastwish · 21/12/2024 19:33

The chocolate chip one toasted is lovely

Candlesandmatches · 21/12/2024 19:34

A good panettone is a thing of beauty. Light, not too sweet, soft and delicious.

MidnightPatrol · 21/12/2024 19:34

If you like bread and butter pudding, that is the best use of it IMO.

Dungareesarecool · 21/12/2024 19:35

I like tescos finest panettone 😋

I buy one simply so I can do this on New Year's Eve. I put leftover chocolates in between the layers and make a baileys custard 🤤

Nc546888 · 21/12/2024 19:36

I absolutely love it!!

What are 'left over chocolates'?

WynkenDeWorde · 21/12/2024 19:44

I love a decent panettone. Carluccio's is the best but I’m holding out until they’re reduced after Christmas.

Timetoread · 21/12/2024 19:44

I love it, nothing tastes quite like it

Mygreyhair · 21/12/2024 19:44

I’ve bought one for the first time ever but have no idea what I’m supposed to do with it.

notinscotland · 21/12/2024 19:45

Can you post the brand info, if you have/know it? I've bought panettone from a local shop that specializes in Italian products and the expiry/"best by" dates are quite soon, maybe 4 - 6 weeks from stocking?

In general, I suspect that commercial mass-produced panettone may be very far from the original - similar to how a fruitcake one buys (even at Waitrose or Fornum & Mason or wherever "upscale") is a distant cousin to the Dundee cakes my mother used to make, with their one-month prep time starting with hand-drying the fruit on All Saints' Day ....

mynameiscalypso · 21/12/2024 19:45

I'm a heathen but I love the M&S chocolate one. It's my treat to myself every year and I just tear off chunks and eat it like a savage. Albeit, a middle class savage.

Er... Eat it? Maybe cut it first in portions, you know, like a cake. Oh and make sure you remove the outer paper as it's not edible (as my partner found out a bit too late when eating it for the first time)

EmeraldDreams73 · 21/12/2024 19:48

I love panettone, we have it every Christmas as nobody likes Christmas cake. There's never enough to make a pud with it but I might buy an extra one to do that...

Poggishairtufts · 21/12/2024 19:48

Chocolate or pistachio one trump the regular ones. A pandoro is tasty.
