Panettone - Just why ????

Lazydomestic · 21/12/2024 19:28

Every year boss has handed out panettone & Prosecco as a Christmas gift - which duly gets shared (ok so technically regifted) at friends Christmas drinks. Never actually tried it as best before date seems to suggest it has nuclear waste grade preservatives…

Is it just me that thinks pannetone is the modern day equivalent of lily of the valley talcum powder ????

I love a decent panettone. Carluccio's is the best but I’m holding out until they’re reduced after Christmas.

Me too, their Lemoncello one is lovely!

I worked with a company selling wholesale bread mixes to “artisan” bakers and their demonstration kitchen turned out some amazing cakes.
BUT they were preservative free. 1 week max before they were noticeably stale (DMIL was very polite)…
If you want a longer shelf life you’re better off with commercial brands.

putting a layer of caramel (sugar and water) beneath the bread and butter before adding custard and baking gives a delicious caramelised bread and butter pudding like nothing else.

mix sugar, cinnamon and butter, spread it on slices and pan fry.

or use the chocolate chip version in a trifle,
chopped up.

it’s a really versatile bread. I buy several and they are easily used up!

Love it. Toasted, half shot of Ameretto poured over, a drizzle of single cream and eat. Delicious! plus drink remaining Ameretto 😁

Goldenbear · 21/12/2024 23:45

I'd prefer to be gifted that than a bottle of Whisky, which I don't drink.

boatyardblues · 21/12/2024 23:49

Panettone is the best for French toast. It soaks up loads of the egg mixture and the candied peel and dried fruit in it is delicious. It is also magnificent in bread and butter pudding. I like it toasted and buttered too. I would love to be given panettone every year.

AshCrapp · 21/12/2024 23:54

Is he Italian? I find it kind of weird that you moan about it so much but have never tried it!

I am half Italian and it's my go to food gift. It's traditional Christmas food in Italy. You can even dip it in your prosecco.

TheFifthTellytubby · 22/12/2024 00:00

Always reminds me of the dough cake I used to have as a child in the westcountry.

Sgtmajormummy · 22/12/2024 00:11

It’s the hot cross bun’s rich Italian cousin IMO!

starfishmummy · 22/12/2024 00:25

If we're given one, I'll use it for bread and butter pudding, but I wouldn't buy one.

What are 'left over chocolates'?

Bountys.

Bountys.

Bounty is the best one.

Fruit cake and Christmas pudding last for a very long time without nuclear grade preservatives - long best before doesn’t mean it’s chemically preserved.

I absolutely LOVE Panettone. Good ones are not dry in the slightest.

boatyardblues · 22/12/2024 10:35

This thread has inspired an extra trip to the supermarket to buy panettone today.

CluelessAboutBiology · 22/12/2024 10:48

@SinnerBoy we could be twins. I thought I was the only person who bought blocks of marzipan to eat. Have you tried adding it to home made mince pies?

Chimchar · 22/12/2024 11:12

Wilko used to do an amazing one in a beautiful gift tin, but they are sadly no more.

I've just been given one as a gift. Eating the mince pies before I crack it open though.

Can I ask you how you're supposed to cut it? In a wedge like a cake or sliced, like bread?

Sgtmajormummy · 22/12/2024 11:52

I leave the paper case on when I cut it into wedges with a bread knife, then peel it off to serve.

Crunchymum · 22/12/2024 11:56

My Italian neighbour makes us one every year. I dislike every other panettone!!

EsmaCannonball · 22/12/2024 12:02

I love it. My local bakery were selling freshly made ones this week and they were gorgeous. The best one I ever had was a maraschino cherry and almond one from the local Italian café/deli. The supermarket ones can be a bit hit and miss.

GETTINGLIKEMYMOTHER · 22/12/2024 12:06

Only ever had one, as a present. Was very dry and disappointing, so most ended up on the bird table - the birds did enjoy it, though.
I didn’t think of making a bread and butter pudding - that would have been best - except for depriving the birds!

StaunchMomma · 22/12/2024 13:39

We all love panettone in our house. We get through probably 6 across December and Jan because the ones I buy for Xmas never make it that far.

It's nice as fruit toast, straight up with tea and in a bread & butter pud.

Always fruit, never chocolate!

I do have to say, however - not all panettone are the same. You can get truly awful, dry ones.

TheFallenMadonna · 22/12/2024 13:42

Our Christmas Day breakfast.

I’ve made mince pies in the past with a rolled marzipan lid, rather than pastry.
