Panettone - Just why ????

Lazydomestic · 21/12/2024 19:28

Every year boss has handed out panettone & Prosecco as a Christmas gift - which duly gets shared (ok so technically regifted) at friends Christmas drinks. Never actually tried it as best before date seems to suggest it has nuclear waste grade preservatives…

Is it just me that thinks pannetone is the modern day equivalent of lily of the valley talcum powder ????

You can make a fabulous bread and butter pudding with it.

Anthony Worrall Thompson has a great recipe for it.

Lazydomestic · 21/12/2024 19:49

Cake With a 3 month best before date just doesn’t bode well.

Liking the idea of disguising it as bread & butter pudding tho 🤔

Had a nan who loved a bit of talcum powder , used to put it in the hoover bag to kill the spiders 😂😂😂😂

Toasted with butter and whiskey marmalade. Gorgeous.

Itsaswelltime · 21/12/2024 19:50

I like it ! Can’t afford one this year so might hope for a reduced or even regifted one after Christmas.

ChristmasfoodisOverrated · 21/12/2024 19:50

Does it taste like brioche? I've never tried it, because I always assume it'll be dry, and that I'll just hate it.

MrsSethGecko · 21/12/2024 19:51

I love it, all kinds, all flavours.

BlackCat25 · 21/12/2024 19:52

So awful IMHO! Every year a friend gifts me a huge one in a box and none of my family will touch it, so I end up giving it to a lovely elderly neighbour (who tells me it ‘keeps him going’ well into January 😂)

MotherWol · 21/12/2024 19:52

Think of it more like a sweet bread than a cake; any way you’d normally enjoy brioche/fruit loaf/hot cross buns you can serve pannetone. I like it toasted with butter, sometimes jam.

trapforsanta · 21/12/2024 19:52

I'm sure Christmas cake / traditional wedding cakes have an eat by date of 3 months or so as well? Probably longer! It's not like they are healthy compared to pannetone? It's all cake at the end of that day!

Pannetone is way nicer than Xmas cake in my opinion because it's not as sweet or cloying.

SinnerBoy · 21/12/2024 19:54

So are they not supposed to be dry, slightly sweet bread? I've had a few over the years and found them uninspiring and needing to be washed down with tea.

I almost picked up a small one in Sainsbury’s to see what the fuss is about! The ingredients say sponge with raisins, which sounds bland and pointless.

They are a bit dreary, but Stollen...Now you are talking!
love a bit of rich marzipan stollen. YUM! knocks pannetone into a cocked hat.

70isaLimitNotaTarget · 21/12/2024 19:57

I buy them in Home Sense /TKMaxx - only the lemon ones though , not dried fruit or chocolare chip.
II opened one this morning, spread it with lemon curd , it was delicious , still a few days left of it .

Does anyone use talc any more?
I remember it from childhood, and used to know a bloke who put talc on his balls when it was a hot day.

Flann3l · 21/12/2024 20:00

We love it and have the Italian one with flaked almonds on top from M&S every year. It’s gorgeous with proper butter and coffee which is what we have for breakfast every Xmas. Kids have a brioche star. You can use both for all sorts of things after.

Doodleflips · 21/12/2024 20:00

I’m not keen on panettone, but I had a slice of the M&S one, that was chocolate chip, and topped with chocolate and orange. It was AMAZING

airingcupboards · 21/12/2024 20:01

Love it, we get through loads and always had it growing up.

I love the M&S one and have had great ones from TK Maxx too.

twilighteaser · 21/12/2024 20:01

Decent ones are lovely. You're supposed to spread a creme on a slice that's the same egg, sugar and mascarpone crema that is used in Tiramisu, but the difference is that is you add brandy. A half decent 1kg one in Milan costs us between €20 - €49. There's a clue in the name, it's bread ('Pane' in Italian) not cake!

RealHousewivesOfTaunton · 21/12/2024 20:01

Whaaaat?! Panettone is the bee's knees! Not the tiny ones though, too dry.

CaliforniaEarthquake · 21/12/2024 20:02

Toasting it and spreading it with butter is the key.

Exactly that...like eating a loofah with raisins in.
Dunked in coffee is the only way to eat it.

Stollen on the other hand is delicious.

creamsnugjumper · 21/12/2024 20:03

It's just like eating a sugary sponge.

GellerYeller · 21/12/2024 20:03

MIL always buys one for occasions, who knows where from, but I just find it very underwhelming. Is it pudding, is it bread, would it cause offence if I lathered it in butter? It’s dry as hell. Just doesn’t scream festive to me.

rewilded · 21/12/2024 20:05

I love them in the morning with a coffee until we hit January. They are very versatile. I can't wait to buy one and I would love one as a present.

Italian spotted dick.
No euphemism intended.
