Panettone - Just why ????

Lazydomestic · 21/12/2024 19:28

Every year boss has handed out panettone & Prosecco as a Christmas gift - which duly gets shared (ok so technically regifted) at friends Christmas drinks. Never actually tried it as best before date seems to suggest it has nuclear waste grade preservatives…

Is it just me that thinks pannetone is the modern day equivalent of lily of the valley talcum powder ????

Not impressed with panettone. It’s just bread with a few raisins in it, so arbitrary.

LadyMonicaBaddingham · 21/12/2024 20:47

Toasting it may well change your opinion!

Charlize43 · 21/12/2024 20:47

I love a slice of panettone with a big cup of coffee for breakfast!

BoobyDazzler · 21/12/2024 20:47

It’s just bread with with bits in. I don’t mind it for making toast with when it’s massively reduced after Christmas but there’s not a cat in hells chance I spend £10+ on a loaf.

What I was going to say, also fried in butter is good.

Drool....

They are a bit dreary, but Stollen...Now you are talking!
love a bit of rich marzipan stollen. YUM! knocks pannetone into a cocked hat.

I've been on a sugar free diet for a couple of years, but I'm going to break it at Christmas. God, I love marzipan! I'm going to seek stollen now!

I used to get reduced blocks of marzipan in my local Co-Op after new year and nibble them over days.

The one with bits of orange in it is delicious!

I'd sooner be given a practical panettone, than a carcinogenic cancer causing scented candle.

We have a limoncello one this year - that's my favourite so far 😚

NameChanges123 · 21/12/2024 21:16

@soupfiend : What are 'left over chocolates'?

😂😂

Ferro · 21/12/2024 22:07

If you knew how much butter and eggs go into a decent panettone you'd understand why a good one is expensive and cheap ones are dry and awful.

sparkleandshine7 · 21/12/2024 22:11

Use of multiple question marks and the the fact you never even tried it is more puzzling. A good one from an Italian deli is great and it is traditionally eaten at Christmas. Not that difficult

2025willbemytime · 21/12/2024 22:12

Never bought one. Assumed not nice. Then decided I'd give it a go. Yum yum yum. Last year we had two or three.

Love it…toasted/bread and butter pudding…delicious!

My family owned local Italian deli has them. Different ones and some made especially for the shop. As above, So many ways to enjoy a pannetone.

Got one and a Pistachio version to try.

Confusing foreign Christmas things - has anyone tried 'melomakorona'?

I’m sure I had one of them removed from my back last year.

A good panettone is a thing of beauty. Light, not too sweet, soft and delicious.

Yes!

SerenityNowInsanityLater · 21/12/2024 22:56

Oh I adore panettone and it's not Christmas without one. I moved to Italy at 19 and learned from there to love panettone... and choose a good one! Pandoro is even lovelier.
Panettone french toast or bread and butter pudding are delicious ways of enjoying panettone if you're not that into it by itself.

Clafoutie · 21/12/2024 23:09

Seems a bit mean to moan about it if you’ve never actually tried it! Panettone are not cheap either.

user98786 · 21/12/2024 23:13

So good. What a nice boss you have

Mookie81 · 21/12/2024 23:17

John Lewis had a tiramisu one this year, I'd have a big chunk in a bowl with LOADS of double cream to soak in. 🤤 it lasted barely a week!

Gatecrashermum · 21/12/2024 23:23

Lots of ignorance on here

Panettone isn't cake or really bread - it is a dough leavened with sourdough starter, has several provings and is enriched every day with indecent amounts of butter and egg yolks.

It is incredibly delicious but a decent one will cost £20+.

It does make great French toast and I love it toasted and buttered.

I'm off dairy this Christmas and Panettone is the thing I will miss the most.

Babycatsmummy · 21/12/2024 23:28

My partner is Italian and he of course, loves panettone. One of his Italian friends gifted him a posh looking one and he assured me it was " expensive and would be the best panettone I've ever tried".

It tasted like cardboard. I think I had a better one from TK Maxx and I still am not keen.

I found out today when you register a birth in my partner's village the council give you a panettone

Sgtmajormummy · 21/12/2024 23:28

I know why the “sell by” date is March/April.
Because that’s when the same companies bring out their Easter version of the cake (candied peel but no sultanas), Colomba.

Gifting Panettone in Italy is like bartering. You get one, in turn you give it to another person. But they do sell about 50 million every year. We’ve just had one so far, it was a supermarket brand and fine for snacking and breakfast. Two more to go and a Pandoro…

Printedword · 21/12/2024 23:30

It's fine and I see no reason to diss the Christmas cake of a different country

SereneCapybara · 21/12/2024 23:31

@Lazydomestic You slice it up with some unsalted butter, pour custard and cream and sweet cinnamon over it, amaretti soaked chopped apricots if you like them, sprinkle flaked almonds on top and bake it. It is the best bread and butter pudding ever.
