Panettone - Just why ????

Lazydomestic · 21/12/2024 19:28

Every year boss has handed out panettone & Prosecco as a Christmas gift - which duly gets shared (ok so technically regifted) at friends Christmas drinks. Never actually tried it as best before date seems to suggest it has nuclear waste grade preservatives…

Is it just me that thinks pannetone is the modern day equivalent of lily of the valley talcum powder ????

You are all wrong. Panettone is divine, best served in a massive chunk with a strong coffee for breakfast. It isn't dry, it's soft, cloudy, sweet and fruity. Absolute heaven.

I had a black forest one last year. It was amazing!

I’ve bought one for the first time ever but have no idea what I’m supposed to do with it.

Eat it.

PondFloater · 21/12/2024 20:07

toasted with mascarpone

your Christmas and waistline will be transformed
good at breakfast, teatime, middle of the night
i used to give them away, now you'd have to fight me for it

It’s lovely toasted. I buy from an artisan bakery.
If I didn’t want one I would drop in the food bank trolley or more likely Olio.

Probably a freshly made one, by a skilled baker is miles away from a shop bought one with a long ''use by'' date.

Pandoro are nicer !!

Whohasnickedthesellotape · 21/12/2024 20:09

I always get gifted one fron my italian auntIL but prefer english fruit cake (no yucky marzipan or icing). I do use panetonne as the base for christmas day tiramisu though so it gets used up.

TheYearOfSmallThings · 21/12/2024 20:10

I was given a chocolate chip one this year and I must say we ploughed through it with great enjoyment, toasted for breakfast.

coldcallerbaiter · 21/12/2024 20:11

You eat it with a chocolate and boozy sauce. Made separately — Mascarpone, cocoa, sugar, brandy.

English have a sweeter tooth than Italians.

It is like ciabatta, it needs toasting, olive oil etc. Panettone as a dessert needs extras.

PigglyWigglyOhYeah · 21/12/2024 20:12

I'd much rather have a panettone than a scented candle. I got candled last week. Despicable.

Tinkerbellflowers · 21/12/2024 20:12

Toasted with some pate` 😋

Oriunda · 21/12/2024 20:18

We're in Italy right now, where we have artisan panettone with pistachio cream etc, or your basic ones you can pick up for €3 at the supermarket.

The tip is to place it on the radiator first; it warms it up nicely and tastes lovely.

We always take one home with us; toasted for breakfast is great.

tillytoodles1 · 21/12/2024 20:21

My Italian neighbour made her own, but I never tried it.

lover99 · 21/12/2024 20:21

My mum got one from her bf and it sat in the cupboard for years.

Movinghouseatlast · 21/12/2024 20:25

It's delicious as it is. Or you can toast it, or make French toast with it, or a bread and butter pudding. Jamie Oliver has a recipe for an ice cream bomb using pannetone soaked in Vin Santo.

PollyCreo · 21/12/2024 20:26

Confusing foreign Christmas things - has anyone tried 'melomakorona'?

I buy one simply so I can do this on New Year's Eve. I put leftover chocolates in between the layers and make a baileys custard 🤤

can I come over? This sounds lush

I'm easily pleased - I love panettone and candles.

Lazydomestic · 21/12/2024 20:32

Would offer to send it to a panettone lover but the neighbours would object to the sound of the cannon required to launch it to its final destination 😂😂😂

Quick search reveals they are accepted at food banks 👍 It deserves to go to a good home (or end up as a gift in which case the circle of life shall continue)

Love it…toasted/bread and butter pudding…delicious!

What I was going to say, also fried in butter is good.

I like tescos finest panettone 😋

Agree, absolutely delicious. Very light

hesitsupallday · 21/12/2024 20:40

It makes the best toast, lots of unsalted butter. Delicious!

SomethingBlues · 21/12/2024 20:41

Agreed it makes the best toast. It’s my Christmas morning breakfast with loads of salty butter.

geminiflanagan · 21/12/2024 20:44

Bloody love panettone. Best bit of Christmas. Tesco finest every year!
