Children: ‘No Christmas, Please!’ YAY!

PoliticalPossum · 18/12/2024 06:25

So, my teenagers confirmed last night they don’t want to do Christmas! They just want to spend the day with family, relaxing, eating good food, playing with the dog and watching old films - no roast, no presents, no forced interactions with family they don’t like.

Not sure whether to laugh, because honestly just eating nibbles, fruit and salads all day whilst we watch Star Wars and DH loses so badly at scrabble he tosses the tiles across the table again sounds amazing, or to cry tears of joy because they actually agreed on something together (honestly, it’s the first time I can remember them ever agreeing)

Not even anything to really comment on here. I just wanted to post and say how happy I am that we all get a day off and can actually just relax without any pressure! Obviously did not say this to them, just nodded and said ‘oh that sounds lovely’ but I am so pleased!

Oh to be a person who finds eating fruit and salad all day fun!

Waffle19 · 18/12/2024 09:26

I thought you were mean not giving your DC presents, but now I know you adopted them as teens I can’t help but think that is even more mean. They’ve surely not been with you that long if you are only 31. Why would you not want to spoilt them and make Christmas special (I get not going to the big party, that’s fine, but let them have their presents and something to eat that’s more special than usual!!)

I reckon the only true thing about this thread is that the OP has a sad, loser DH that throws things around the room when he loses a kids board game. Love the sound of the 'wino' mums though. Would happily crack open a bottle of sherry with them 😂

I agree.

Perhaps the rest of the story is what OP convinces herself of, so she doesn’t have to face the reality of how sad her life is.

What would be really epic and chefs kiss is if @PoliticalPossum came back and gave a truthful TED talk on what inspires these kinds of banal trolling, what the troller gets out of it etc. I can understand the dead twins type trolls or the grifters, but I’ve always wondered about this kind of troll. Harmless banal shit that affects no one and is really inane. What’s the reason for it?

Loneliness, and engagement. She probably has no friends and no one to talk to in real life, so a ‘conversation’ on MN is the next best thing.

Gem359 · 18/12/2024 09:27

Surely you've got the message from the teens that they just don't want to go to the party of 40 people? I wouldn't want that either. They've probably agreed to all the rest just to get out of that bit - but I'm pretty sure they'd like their presents really. And if you're going to give them on their birthday then why not give them at Christmas?

Waffle19 · 18/12/2024 09:28

LemonySippet · 18/12/2024 09:01

I think she's here from the ISC (International Salad Council), trying to make us all give up our turkey-eating ways and move over to the dark side of the Christmas Salad with her cleverly crafted Easy Christmas story.

No more MN for me today, this has absolutely won it 😂

84Win · 18/12/2024 09:29

If this post were true (which I think we all agree it’s not) then I can't help but wonder what sort of 31 year old has two adopted teens from a foreign country that she doesn't want to spoil at Christmas.

We only get 18 Christmases when our children are children. OP will have already missed out on a number of these.

Give the kids some bloody presents, fgs.

Oh to be a person who finds eating fruit and salad all day fun!

I bloody love sitting around eating bowls of fruit and salad. Love it.

User37482 · 18/12/2024 09:31

Ah OP you sound lonely, lots of people are, it’s unfortunately not that unusual , you don’t have to make up stories. Try posting authentically as yourself 💐

VacuumPacked · 18/12/2024 09:31

MaltipooMama · 18/12/2024 09:14

Jesus some people suck the fun out of everything!!

Well done OP it sounds like you are all going to be having a lovely chilled day, hope you all have a wonderful, stress-free relaxing time 🥂

I don’t think your icon is relevant, think its a Shloer household,
obviously it isn’t US who are the fun sponges
lovely chilled days happen anytime,
besides which given the ironic use of your first word
your comprehension skill needs addressing

livingafulllife · 18/12/2024 09:31

I haven't done xmas in years op best ting i ever gave up.
My son is 21 and he said the same as your kids when he was about 13 we spend the day like any other day.
No decs no gifts no faffing no fakeness no slaving in the kitchen he now works all over Xmas.
Xmas dinner is just a sunday roast really that neither of us like.
I have a deep cleaning day on xmas eve and binge on youtube.

Butchyrestingface · 18/12/2024 09:32

I would like an AMA so I could ask the perp what kind of depraved mind could dream up a story about enjoying salad five times a week.

Some rabbits people simply have NO limits.

Oreyt · 18/12/2024 09:33

My 14 year old doesn't like opening presents, the dinner or being with family all day.

Tough shite!!

Notjustabrunette · 18/12/2024 09:35

So you’re 31, and your mum in her late 80’s (so she had you in her 50’s?) has been coming to you for 20+ years (so since you were 10?).

MiddleParking · 18/12/2024 09:36

Loneliness, and engagement. She probably has no friends and no one to talk to in real life, so a ‘conversation’ on MN is the next best thing.

It would have been really easy to do this thread and only generate positive engagement, though. New username to avoid inconsistencies, “is anyone looking forward to a simple Christmas at home?” type thing without the weird no presents business, google an elaborate recipe and pretend that’s what you’re making etc. Or even just spend enough time thinking about it to get the age details right so you don’t get caught up, it wouldn’t have been complex. Actually am now wondering how many of the cosy banal threads I enjoy are completely made up by people who are really about to endure shit Christmasses 🥲

PoliticalPossum · 18/12/2024 07:07

No cooking, at all. No presents. No seeing family (other than the two winos I call DM and MIL).

TBH it’s a big change for us given we usually spend 5+hrs dressed up and socialising at a party with 40+ people, have a huge blow out meal and lots of presents. It may not sound it to others, but honestly, it’s usually a pretty full on day - hence my utter, utter, joy.

Instead we’ll have a day sitting on the sofa (post dog walk), playing games and eating healthily 😍

Edited

Does part of that ‘no presents’ mean donating those already purchased? Otherwise it is just ‘we’ll have the Christmas presents a little later, but pretend we didn’t do Christmas presents’.

LilyBartsHatShop · 18/12/2024 09:37

Your lovely, non-grabby teens are blowing posters' minds, OP!

Cantabulous · 18/12/2024 09:37

Your family sounds lovely OP. Havd a happy Christmas 🤶

So is the mother who apparently birthed her at 55.

Nothatgingerpirate · 18/12/2024 09:39

Good for you, OP!
I just decided not to bother with a Christmas tree, since it's just husband and me.
👍
He'll still have the roast, though.
😊

PenguinLover24 · 18/12/2024 09:39

Sounds great! They sound a good bunch!

I bloody love sitting around eating bowls of fruit and salad. Love it.

So lucky.
Are you extremely thin and healthy?
What do you do for a treat?

(I'm not into roasts myself, but a special day would be full of chocolate!)

Elphamouche · 18/12/2024 09:40

I don’t understand the no presents. I’d be gutted if someone said that to me, especially week before Christmas when I’ve already bought and wrapped most things!

You can still do Christmas without seeing people and getting dressed up.

Edited to add - fuck the salad!!

Moonlightdust · 18/12/2024 09:40

YABU purely for the desire to spend Christmas Day eating salads 🤪

ChocolateCroissantCafe · 18/12/2024 09:40

Enjoying the idea of the sneaky ISC planting festive salad stories!
