Children: ‘No Christmas, Please!’ YAY!

PoliticalPossum · 18/12/2024 06:25

So, my teenagers confirmed last night they don’t want to do Christmas! They just want to spend the day with family, relaxing, eating good food, playing with the dog and watching old films - no roast, no presents, no forced interactions with family they don’t like.

Not sure whether to laugh, because honestly just eating nibbles, fruit and salads all day whilst we watch Star Wars and DH loses so badly at scrabble he tosses the tiles across the table again sounds amazing, or to cry tears of joy because they actually agreed on something together (honestly, it’s the first time I can remember them ever agreeing)

Not even anything to really comment on here. I just wanted to post and say how happy I am that we all get a day off and can actually just relax without any pressure! Obviously did not say this to them, just nodded and said ‘oh that sounds lovely’ but I am so pleased!

This thread is a bit bullshit

Your late 80s DM has a 31 year old daughter? Really?

That's the most believable part of the thread.

ShadesmarBead · 18/12/2024 09:42

The absolute best part of this story is the two widowed octogenarians drunk on sherry and smutty novels.
I think I love them both already and would like a whole tv series based on their week at OP’s house.
RIP Dame Maggie Smith, she would have been perfect as one of the granny winos.

Your lovely, non-grabby teens are blowing posters' minds, OP!

I think it’s more things like her MIL coming for the past 20+ years, even though OP is only 31.

Unless her and her DH are related or she was a child bride, then that’s obviously not possible.

So lucky.
Are you extremely thin and healthy?
What do you do for a treat?

(I'm not into roasts myself, but a special day would be full of chocolate!)

Thin as a pencil and as glossy as a butcher's dog. I will enjoy a sliver of white meat on Christmas Day.

Of course not totally unheard of for the father but the mother, having children in late 50's is quite rare surely. So the OP's mother had her in her late 50's, but also her husbands mother had him also in her late 50's? Not likely.

It of course does sound sketchy given the details but again everyone is assuming biological. Women do adopt or take on step children who call them mum/dad. So ‘biological mum being 50s’ is a massive assumption on everyone part. No one would know my dad isn’t my biological dad but he raised me since I was two so he’s my dad

I love how many people are still responding as though this is in any way genuine 😂

And been hosting widowed mother and mil for 20+ years.

And her mum had her in her late 50s.

Do people really find cooking a roast that harrowing

I always think this - Christmas dinner is literally just a roast

Discombobble · 18/12/2024 09:46

Gosh there are a lot of nasty people on here!! If this is what the teenagers and OP want what is wrong with it? Sounds lovely to me. Are some people so unhappy with their own lives and choices that they get a kick out of pulling other people’s posts apart?

don't believe a word of it. No teenager would go 'no presents please' unless they have serious issues.

Even if mine did say it, i'd just nod/smile and make sure they still had them here to open, not gleefully go 'wheeeee, they can stay at my mothers and they can have them whenever' how fucking mean minded and cruel would you have to be to actually follow that through.

Absolute bollocks.

and these aren’t just any teenagers

these teenagers apparently have recently been adopted from another country and moved over to the UK to be adopted by the OP presumably when she was in her twenties if she’s only 30 now

Likely not down to OP's parenting though as they are 15 and 16 years old, OP is 31 and they have been adopted and brought over from a foreign country. They have likely only been with OP for a few years maximum and she's already sick of giving them a proper Christmas 😂

A ‘proper Christmas’ varies from family to family though - why is your version better?

Oreyt · 18/12/2024 09:56

Are you telling us about a dream you had?

Ifyouinsistthen · 18/12/2024 09:56

This sounds awesome @PoliticalPossum - have an amazing day! Based on many posts on MN Christmas is a very stressful period for many people for many reasons - one being a need to conform to a set of expectations that create a ton of thankless work (usually for women) and hurt feelings. I’m happy you’ve found consensus in your family on the best way to do it for you this year.

As an aside, not sure about the posters on here who seem to be taking your decision so personally (“No presents? So late to cancel plans?!? Isn’t what you describe a normal Christmas??? etc.). If you’re happy with a more traditional Christmas (I absolutely am and happily knee deep in baubles and tinsel as I type) why does it bother you so much what someone else chooses to do?

Nc546888 · 18/12/2024 09:58

Sounds like Christmas to me!! Food, family and games and films is Christmas!!!

okay so no roast but not much else different
