What will you never scrimp on

For me it's household bin liners, life is too short to faff around with splitting and leaking rubbish for the sake of saving 10p

Perfume. Eau de toilette just isn't strong enough.

Ice cream. There is a notable difference in flavour and texture between cheap and expensive.

Agree on the bin liners, although I have had a few disappointing ones even on the more expensive end.

Haircare products. My hair is curly and difficult to manage; cheap brands are useless in taming the frizz.

Please recommend some anti-frizz hair care products!

Washing up liquid
Toilet paper
Heating

And of course, I'll never scrimp on a mattress.

It's tea for me. It has to be Twinings.

Ladyof2025 · 17/12/2024 20:19

Also ice cream. I won't eat anything but Haagen Dazs.

101Kittens · 17/12/2024 20:20

Tyres and car maintenance in general

Light bulbs

Happy scrimping -
Nappies (Lidl excellent for newborns! Aldi and Nutmeg aren't.)
Crackers
Disinfectant and cleaning products. Astonish range.

Ladyof2025 · 17/12/2024 20:20

Baking foil. I use only the non-stick Bacofoil and nothing else.

Superworm24 · 17/12/2024 20:23

Shoes. I spent years having to wear cheap, flimsy primark shoes when I had no money. I'd wear those ballerina pumps they sold, even when it was freezing and had snowed.

Clothing. Same as above. I'd rather have a few good quality items than more cheap, ill fitting stuff. I've now got stuff that is almost 10 years old and still looks good.

Bed sheets. They've got to be decent, thick cotton ones. I don't know how I used to sleep on the polyester ones.

Coffee. We've got a coffee machine and I now don't like instant coffee at all.

What curly hair products do you use? I am always looking for something that will work!!

Glasses. When you have astigmatism and prism, especially if you have prism on both the vertical and horizontal axes, Specsavers won't cut it because they don't routinely assess for prism and examine at three metres instead of the full six. (There are reasons of optical physics why examination distance matters, especially for prism prescribing.) I was calling into optometrists for weeks trying to find one that would do the examination at six metres because I had daily headaches and knew that I needed my vertical prism reviewing. The boutique, pricy one I found not only adjusted my vertical prism but prescibed horizontal prism for the first time ever.

I nearly fainted when I saw the quote for my glasses, it's more than a month's mortgage, but I honestly cannot put a pricetag on not having the daily headaches that I was having before and being able to sit and read a book without pain.

Don't cheap out by trying to take your fancy prescription to a cheaper optician to make the glasses, at least not for your primary pair. If the glasses don't work, the examining optometrist will blame the dispensing optician and vice-versa. If the same company makes the glasses and examines your eyes, they can't point the finger at someone else.

Tea
coffee
binbags
washing up liquid
shampoo/ conditioner
sausages
bacon

verityeer · 17/12/2024 20:28

Food. I buy most of my cleaning products and household bits and bobs elsewhere, but food is Waitrose, M&S, or local independent farm shops and delicatessens. I find I only spend about £15 more per week, and I don't throw out £15 of mouldy fresh fruit and veg two days later.

Better quality/higher welfare meat.
And heating. I hate being cold!

Couldn't care less about bin liners - they literally go in the bin and even the cheap ones I've never had rip!

Same. Luckily don't need to buy the meat. Get it for free
