Just seen on the news a baby is in hospital after being bitten by an xl bully. And two people have been arrested. Baby is in a serious condition. Why haven't these killer dogs been banned.

I’ve been bitten by many a frenchie and there’s nothing cute about them. Angry, stinky and prone to dropping dead in my experience.

Off topic but I heard this week that the average life expectancy of a frenchie is four years? Does anyone know if that’s true?

Just Google how many XL breeders have been caught breeding these things. It's frightening and I fear a ban won't stop them

There's easy money to be made. People are not going to stop breeding the things any more than they are going to stop robbing houses or dealing drugs.

HRTQueen · 12/12/2024 23:29

How many times are we gijgn to read reports liej this or worss

there has to be a cull

or the very least if these dogs are registered living where children are they are to be taken away and pts

authorities have to step in when parents make such stupid dangerous choices

This is true.
However the prospect of having this costly acquisition summarliy despatched by a police marksman may deter some buyers. Not to mention increasing public dislike of them.
Breeders will lose interest if they are stuck with puppies that no-one wants to buy.

WishinAndHopin · 13/12/2024 00:37

Most breeders have stopped, as the puppies are certainly no longer easy money. You quite literally can't give them away, let alone profit.

My cousin was an XL breeder, and immediately stopped. They ban isn't perfect but it is working and is preventing us from becoming over-run with fighting dogs like in the USA.

If you think our bite statistics are bad, wait until you see that of the USA.

So it's ok in 10 years the breed will have died out.

With an average of 5 deaths a year from these dogs, in 10 years there will be at least another 50 deaths.

Ahh that's ok then!

Fuck sake!

Cull the dogs and the owners!

Allthehorsesintheworld · 13/12/2024 01:30

“They used to get in the travel cot together. He would sniff the baby and wander off.'"

Just this one sentence shows their level of sheer stupidity. A dog the size of an XL Bully lies on a baby? Think the baby will survive ? Even standing on baby could crush bones/ neck/ stomach.
What sort of idiot allows a huge dog in a cot with a baby.

Ja428 · 13/12/2024 01:32

I hope the poor baby is ok.

It scares me that the dog was owned by an 18yo. Surely these dogs ought to be owned by skilled, experienced owners - if they are to be owned at all, which ideally they would not be. And never ever left alone with little kids.

I do not understand why it is legal to have this type of dog inside the same property as a baby - ever. Regardless of whether the dog/baby are visitors or resident.

They won’t have died out because the law is not being enforced. I’m still seeing puppies, only last week I saw a huge brand new litter.

Still seeing them unmuzzled. Seeing lots that just now don’t get walked. Many being shipped to Scotland. Lots of them have been rebranded as something else and nothing is being done.

RevolvingSpace · 13/12/2024 06:55

I agree they'll just be rebranded. I know it's possible other totally different breeds will pop up that the real dickheads will want for a while. Like Cane Corsos etc. But. For some reason, everyone loves/wants a pitbull. Pitbulls seem to be the only breed people will breed to try and get round bans. Other breeds have been "fashionable" in the past. Like Rottweilers or Dobermans. But they obviously don't do well enough as they've died out with the arsehole dickheads. We've come back around to Pitbulls. Which is what XLs are. Bigger pitbulls. So they'll just start breeding pitbulls with something else to get around the ban.
I do think we're at the point where ALL bull breeds should now just be banned. Yes lots of people will be upset over things like staffies. But staffies are still high up in the bite statistics. And I'm not saying they should all be killed immediately. Just allowed to die out. Otherwise you'll never be able to fully ban pitbull versions because they'll just breed them to be similar to staffies and get round it that way.

I don't think they are being shipped to Scotland as it is now illegal (since February)?

Eta: did you report the litter you saw?

Edited

My workplaces policy is to treat them and not to report. I don’t agree with it but it is what it is.

That particular litter was handed over to the authorities though although that was nothing to do with. The useless owner who was banned from keeping dogs got caught.

Thank God for that! Will the puppies have to be euthanised? Poor pups, they didn't ask to be born but it is the best thing to do, I suppose. Horrible for whoever has to do it, too.

tigerbear · 13/12/2024 10:07

Saw one of these beasts whilst out walking my dog last night - thankfully it was on the other side of the road, but as we walked past, it turned and stared across, with those horrible evil eyes. They’re terrifying, and my little dog seemed scared too, immediately shrinking toward me, on high alert.

shittestusernameever · 12/12/2024 21:42

We had 3 in the area near where I live. One has just been destroyed as it wasn't registered and the owner hasn't bothered to turn up to court.

I know of another young lad (daughter's friend) who has an unregistered XL who he hides away. I've reported it numerous times and spoken with him.

My neighbour in our cul-de-sac is a breeder and she still has an XL, other neighbours suspect she is still breeding it. It's monstrous, the muscles on the thing is something else.

I live in a middle class area on the outskirts of Chester.

Please report her anonymously
if it’s entire, that’s illegal .

The sort of brainless fool that is drawn to pits and other aggressive breeds .
XL bully type are so hideous as well with the little piggy eyes, and the massive maw.
Americans call this type of dog “ pissfingers”.

I'll never understand people who are lax with dogs and kids. Regardless of breed, they're still animals!

We got our pup when he was 8 weeks old, he's 9 now. He's a Border Collie and the gentlest, most good natured dog I've ever come across. But he's still an animal!

Example - as he's gotten older he tends to sleep a lot deeper at night. Last month I made the mistake of kissing his head to say good night when he was asleep on the couch late at night. He just reacted, because he was sleeping so deeply he didn't hear me.

He nipped my neck with his teeth. It was pouring with blood at the time, but thankfully wasn't that bad. It has left a scar though. Now, out of everyone in the house he's the most scared of me, so if he can react like that with me he can react like that with anyone.

So we're now keeping him away from DGD who is 2.

Sleep startle.
It’s very common.

I was on a train journey with my passive dog, and she was asleep
However the train doors hissed , and she woke up and stood up within seconds.

Once I kissed a sleeping dog and she air snapped - Sleep startle.

I never touch a sleeping dog without speaking gently to them first ( own dog/s)

Culling the dogs and owners would be perfect and solve more problems than just the XL bully one!!!

I can't help but think the gov have washed their hands of it... They think they have done their bit with the pathetic new legislation they brought in.

Why would XL bullies ever disappear? They are pitbull type which were supposedly banned over 30 years ago but the shit stains that bred them simply rebranded them as xl bullies and carried on breeding them.

The government and public have royally been fucked over but it was as clear as day what was happening. Now we're riddled with pitbull crosses in family homes owned by pond life that shouldn't be in charge of a TV remote let alone a fucking lethal dog breed.

Or maybe the gov know exactly what has been going on and hoped xl Pitbulls would help reduce the population a bit.

An XL bully isn’t a pit ball but yes there are similarities. If XL bullies are eradicated something else will be created from another cross breed, it’s easy to make a pit bull of XL bully look alike by crossing a staffie with something like a mastif or rotti? There will always be dog attacks and deaths because there will always be big dangerous breeds and cross breeds. More needs to be done to stop people owning dogs like these. People shouldn’t be able to just go out and buy a puppy with no knowledge of the breed. Most rescues won’t home large dogs in households with young children, rescue vet potential owners and do house checks, sadly anyone can just go out and purchase a puppy with no checks.

StarkleLittleTwink · 13/12/2024 17:49

My Lord - don’t these idiots EVER learn? They are horrible dogs anyway. I can’t imagine why anyone wants one.

XL bullies are created from pitbulls. It is the starting breed. A pitbull often crossed with an American Bulldog. Sometimes other breeds. So while it’s not a purebred pitbull, it’s still a part pitbull. And pitbull types are meant to be banned in this country. What is a pitbull type if not a pitbull cross?

Meeatcheese · 13/12/2024 18:09

Total cull, total ban, bring in the army if necessary, just get rid of the fuckers.

This is so tragic and so sadly preventable.

My parents took on a large breed puppy when my mum was pregnant with me. The pup was about six months when I was born. Despite being a good family breed (red setter) my mum told me that she never, ever, left me alone with the dog. She took me upstairs if she needed the loo. If we were downstairs together we were separated by a baby gate. I remember her telling me this as a teenager and I scoffed, thinking she was silly. "Dogs are still animals" she said "no matter how you treat them, they are still animals and they can turn on you in a split second. You must never trust them 100%". I always think of her words when I read these tragic stories. Dogs are not "fur babies" they are beasts.

Absolutely this. No matter how sweet, gentle and loving the dog is, no matter what breed, it is still an animal, and leaving any dog alone unsupervised with young children is ALWAYS a risk. No matter how small people think that risk is, it isn’t a risk anyone should ever take.

I work in a veterinary field (doing lots of work with dangerous dogs) and have spent most of my life working and rehabilitating rescue GSD. I know big dogs, I know the dangers and what dogs are capable of because I’ve seen things go wrong so many times.

XL bullies are a whole different ball game. Unpredictable, unintelligent and give absolutely no warning signals at all. The latter is IMO what makes them so dangerous, you can’t read them therefore can’t predict these attacks. They are bred that way, a fighting dog full of game with no self preservation alongside the element of surprise.

We are euthanising lots of them in my area. Lots who have showed dangerous and downright scary behaviour that luckily hasn’t made the news. The majority are owned by people who have no business owning a dog like this (or criminals) and most of them have 0 funds so dump them at the first sign of a problem. If you look at the groups of people defending them it’s a certain type of person every time…people with a brain cell can see statistically there’s no defence. Only last week we euthanised one that the owner managed to stop attacking his child by the skin of his teeth- again previously a lovely dog with no signs of a problem. He was completely shook up and couldn’t believe it despite all of the news and evidence of how mentally wrong the breed is.

Why anyone needs one of these out of however many hundreds of breeds not bred to tear things up is beyond me. I honestly believe anyone with children and an XL should be forced to euthanise it by social services. Those who are defending them probably haven’t met a horrible one in the flesh but I have and it’s enough to have me seriously considering taking a weapon with me when I’m somewhere like a dog walk or a park because the police can’t defend the us from them (I won’t because I’m not a law breaker but I’ve thought about it!) I wish those who owned them would admit their mistake and do the responsible thing.

I’m terrified if I see one out with my children: thankfully I live in an area with few but have seen some. What weapon would be helpful to defend yourself from them? (Obviously we do not have access to guns but what could be taken out to help if one attacked?)
