Just seen on the news a baby is in hospital after being bitten by an xl bully. And two people have been arrested. Baby is in a serious condition. Why haven't these killer dogs been banned.

Won't stop until they're all destroyed.

A 76 yo woman and 18yo man arrested so the dog might not actually belong to the parents.

No but probably a parent/grandparent and sibling of the parents.

True but they took the baby into a house where it lived presumably OR allowed someone to bring it for a visit

I was having a picnic once and a woman walked near us with the most enormous entire male dog i have ever seen. It was muzzled and she was with a child about 5 or so, a smallish toddler in a pram and a newborn in a sling on her chest. She was about 5 ft 2 and perhaps 7 stone. I'd never seen a dog like that before and said 'Gosh, he's impressive- what is he?' She replied he was a Cane Corso and she had to walk him in isolated places because he was other dog reactive.

I've since found out that Cane Corsos are the next red flag dog that may well be banned. Personally I thought I was looking at a tragedy waiting to happen. Any fucking muppet who thinks a strong and powerful pack animal bred specifically for aggression is a reasonable animal to have in a small family home with small children is insane.

SpryCat · 12/12/2024 16:03

I don’t leave my grandson alone in the same room as my Lhasa Apso let alone a big dog

Eyresandgraces · 12/12/2024 16:04

So a same breed dog in the same road was seized by police in November 2023 after biting a man’s finger.
The police asked the owner to voluntarily give up the dog but he declined so the dog was returned.
Absolutely disgraceful that they were allowed to keep the dog who is almost certainly the one that’s now attacked a baby.

What an absolute idiot. I don’t think Cane Corsos are known for being that aggressive but their sheer size means that they will easily kill you if they do attack.

So registering the dog didn't save that baby from being attacked and seriously injured. Complete ban is called for.

There has been a ban of sorts, all bullies must be neutered so there won't be any further puppies, in 10 years , probably less they won't exist anymore.
What you're suggesting is a cull , which makes me feel uneasy .
And for info I don't own an XL bully , but do have a large powerful breed who I'm confident wouldn't hurt a fly , however he's never left unsupervised with small children, ever .

DarkAndTwisties · 12/12/2024 16:06

A dog that is considered dangerous enough to not be legally allowed to be off a lead and unmuzzled in public should fairly obviously also not be allowed to live in a home with children.

I don’t feel that uncomfortable with a cull as long as it’s done humanely. Also there will be idiots who breed and sell them on the black market even if there is a neutering requirement.

God,these things scare the hell out of me-I'm a massive dog lover but not this breed

Their eyes have no soul to them-anyone who puts one in the same house as a child needs ss to step in and take the child

Someone I know said that if this breed was human, they'd be a psychopath-i fully agree

I know someone with 3 dc under ten-she also has 3 of these dogs

'Wouldn't hurt a fly','lovely dogs' and 'the laws are a joke' (she's not wrong but not in the way she means)

She leaves them to 'babysit' while she fucks off to the loo and cook dinner

She also thinks we are all over reacting when she takes them for a walk without a muzzle and parents are over cautious when they refuse to walk in the local park with their young kids as its full of these dogs and their braindead owners

It's only a matter of time before she's in the papers herself, sobbing about her 'much loved xl dog,who loves her kids, killed one' (or more)

If you want to own one by yourself,go ahead (some people dont want to be in the gene pool) but dont drag one into living with young children

I have to agree with this. The eyes are terrifying. I know one and she is so placid but she is so strong walking down the street I've seen her pull the 14 yr old walking her into the road before. Her eyes are like a greeny brown and they look cold.

The police say that there were no legal grounds to retain the dog, so it is the law that needs looking at imo.

You'd think, wouldn't you?

Yet people will argue until they're blue in the face that it's "deed not breed" Hmm

saltysandysea · 12/12/2024 16:14

The baby and the dog were 'peas in a pod' according to a family member

all this tells you is that the parents, relatives & dog owner were complacent, ignorant, and/or in denial about the dangers of dogs (particularly XL Bully’s). Just a disaster waiting to happen & it was the most vulnerable who took the fallout.

Reddog1 · 12/12/2024 16:17

It’s time for all chav-hounds to be humanely culled.

No don’t go ahead because you would be likely to know and interact with children at some point plus would be taking it for walks in parks and the like.

I didn't really think that one through-apologies
I did mean if you want to own one,go ahead in your own home (I didn't think of walking the damn thing)
At least if it goes for you,it's your own fault
I stand by anyone who gets one of these beasts and allows it near any child, needs to have the kids taken away
You would leave a loaded gun next to your bed, within reach of little fingers-these animals are just as bad,if not worse

slightlydistrac · 12/12/2024 16:21

All those people with small children who have been in two minds about visiting relatives with suspect-breed dogs over Christmas... it's time to make your minds up.

Babies and dogs aren't supposed to be "peas in a pod", at best they should not interact with each other at all and should be physically separated from one another until the child is capable of using gentle hands and capable of some level of impulse control, and even then, always with supervision from a responsible adult.

@slightlydistrac that was before the ban was brought in though, so not sure if they'd have had more ability to remove it if it had happened after?

Their eyes are dead.
(xl bullies)
Most dogs have eyes that sparkle with intelligence- Not these things
just going into Tesco now
two massive Greyhounds are collecting for a dog charity!
Gorgeous Hounds!

Goody2ShoesAndTheFilthyBeast · 12/12/2024 16:34

A relative is quoted as saying "It is shocking. You see and hear about it all the time, but you don't actually think it is going to happen to your own family,"

And that's exactly it isn't it? They refuse to accept their dog could snap. No matter how many times they read about the same breed doing exactly that and the owners saying how lovely the dog was.

I do not understand what stops them from thinking hmm, if so many 'beloved family pets' of this breed could turn out of the blue, and kill someone, then mine could too.

But no, they instead choose to make ridiculous nanny dog and gentle nature claims and tell you how next door's chihuahua is far meaner...

Well yes, you undercooked Yorkshire pudding, that chihuahua may well be a gobshite but it's never going to rip a kid's face clean off now is it?

This is so tragic and so sadly preventable.

My parents took on a large breed puppy when my mum was pregnant with me. The pup was about six months when I was born. Despite being a good family breed (red setter) my mum told me that she never, ever, left me alone with the dog. She took me upstairs if she needed the loo. If we were downstairs together we were separated by a baby gate. I remember her telling me this as a teenager and I scoffed, thinking she was silly. "Dogs are still animals" she said "no matter how you treat them, they are still animals and they can turn on you in a split second. You must never trust them 100%". I always think of her words when I read these tragic stories. Dogs are not "fur babies" they are beasts.

What a bloody awful way to live in your own home though through choice, if you have to stalk your child around the house to not risk an animal attacking it. Just don’t have dogs around infants - and certain breeds around children at all.

And, of course the dog was named 'Hunter' 🙄
