Just seen on the news a baby is in hospital after being bitten by an xl bully. And two people have been arrested. Baby is in a serious condition. Why haven't these killer dogs been banned.

@TheMoment i really don’t think there’s anything you could carry that would defend you. They’re so big, heavy and strong anything like a baseball bat would probably be knocked out your hand. There is an attack alarm that screeches, sends out a smell and sprays a liquid, but I’ve no idea if it would work. I’ll try to find the link. https://www.thesafetysupplycompany.co.uk/p/9551080/walk-easy-trident-triple-action-personal-alarm-138-dbs-wea-we333.html?gad_source=1&gbraid=0AAAAAD9kxuvpTAHyMzQm_HzzXOe5m0GVH&gclid=EAIaIQobChMI5cDHzriligMVf6JQBh11wSSwEAQYASABEgKPfPD_BwE

They are lovely dogs, our neighbour has one, it's more scared of people than people scared of it. The dog is well looked after and wears a muzzle when out. It's the owners of all dogs why dogs are vicious. No dog should be left with a baby/child alone.

3luckystars · 13/12/2024 20:00

Maybe they should change the wording of the campaign, ‘yes they are lovely, but they can turn’ to appeal to people who don’t understand.

THEY TURN AND ARE TOO BIG AND STRONG TO STOP

Scarfitwere · 13/12/2024 20:11

The sorts of people who have these dogs, especially with children, are just rough and subclass unfortunately. Let them crack on its their kids who are getting hurt....kids that no doubt would end up the same as them anyway!

Sleep startle.
It’s very common.

I was on a train journey with my passive dog, and she was asleep
However the train doors hissed , and she woke up and stood up within seconds.

Once I kissed a sleeping dog and she air snapped - Sleep startle.

I never touch a sleeping dog without speaking gently to them first ( own dog/s)

I learnt that the hard way. 😂

And the Darwin Award for 2024 goes to....

Lovely dogs my arse.

Oopydoops · 13/12/2024 20:51

I was just reading that the dog was supposed to be a therapy dog for the 18 year old. WTAF.

What exactly is it about them that’s so lovely?

WeekendFreedom · 12/12/2024 18:39

Absolutely awful what’s happened that poor child but couldn’t we say that about all breeds then? Those little ratty looking things and chihuahuas are absolutely awful for biting and snapping but nothing gets said about how viscous they act because they are small

They are small, and a lot of them can be staggeringly vicious little things, but they are not capable of inflicting the same level of injuries as a much larger animal.

That sounds like a recipe for disaster tbh one of these dogs that can kill is scared of people, what will this lovely dog do when it feels threatened by someone just going about their business? Your neighbour might also be a lovely person but they are an idiot and I fucking hate the "it's the owners not the dog" that might be the case with a dog who can be trained to stop nipping but even that little ratty dog will nip if it's injured or in pain but that won't kill anyone will it? There is no way to get one of these huge ugly dogs off you once it starts and just because it's a lovely dog today doesn't mean it hasn't got the potential to turn any moment

Firethehorse · 14/12/2024 01:39

I really don’t know why we are surprised and horrified anymore because this happens so often. That poor child will be disfigured for life at the very least.
The facts are that it’s not only children who are in danger from these beasts, last week there was the very fit and healthy 78 year old man innocently walking his own small breed dog who had to have an arm and a leg amputated.
It’s time they were all destroyed, I’m a big animal lover but we humans created this horrendous breed. Saying we should just let them live out their time is naive when you consider the irresponsibility of their owners.

Do you mean he just walked around in BM Bargains with 'assistance dog' written on his lead.

Thelnebriati · 14/12/2024 11:48

Where I live it looks like they'll be switching to 'mini XL bullies'. I've just had to stand still on the pavement while a nervous owner coaxed hers to walk past me.

If they are lovely why are they banned and why do so many attack people.
They are dangerous and unpredictable so may seem lovely but they are very dangerous. Lion and tigers are lovely animals but I wouldn't want one as a pet

Absolutely. Lions and tigers are magnificent beautiful animals. But they aren't family pets and not usually allowed to get into cots with babies. About time these dogs were treated as the dangerous killers they are and dealt with

I just pray that when the baby recovers that social services do their job and remove the child from the parents whether it was their dog or not they are completely irresponsible

FlowerInTheSea · 14/12/2024 14:49

Thick as mince owners. Why do they always describe these things as soppy? The word makes me shudder. Do they not get it that these things are "soppy" until they're not and then you (or more likely an innocent child) is fucked.

I don't get why a "responsible" owner would want to keep an animal that needs a muzzle to leave the house and, if it decided to, could quite easily kill you.

Marine30 · 14/12/2024 17:27

There are so many other wonderful dogs out there. Wtaf would anyone want one of these hound of hell type dogs.
I’ve seen who they appeal to so I know the answer but it still shocks me that anyone would own one. Scary society we live in sometimes.

slightlydistrac · 14/12/2024 20:19

I've had cats all my life. Would I allow a large, totally calm, friendly, completely domesticated and soft-as-butter cat anywhere near children if that pet cat was approaching the size of a jaguar with jaws to match? Not in a million years.

ticktickticktickBOOM · 14/12/2024 20:33

These children have no say in whether they live with an animal that could potentially kill them or cause life changing injuries.

Why are children not being protected by the law?

lottielittle · 15/12/2024 02:22

That poor baby, how awful, why would anybody let their children around one of these dogs :(

Does anybody know if it’s possible to check if a dog is registered or where to report an owner that isn’t following rules?

I was at my mums house last week and we spotted what appeared to be an XL bully roaming up and down the road alone and un-muzzled! New neighbours moved in a couple of doors down about 6 months ago and shortly after moving in 2 XL’s were seized from the property by police. We are unsure if this dog was there at the time or if they’ve managed to get it afterward as my mum said she didn’t even know they had the dogs and she’s never seen any dogs be walked from that house. Anyway, we called 101 who said they would call back but by the time they did another neighbour had spotted the dog and was obviously braver than us as he went out and managed to get the dog back into the back garden which we are assuming he had escaped from, there was nobody in the house, are they allowed to be left outside alone? Anyway 101 said as the dog was now confined there was nothing to be done.

It’s a cul-de-sac in a quiet village and a lot of the children like to play outside together in the summer, including my children but now I wouldn’t want them out there which is a shame as they like to play with the neighbours children but if this dog can get out then it’s just not safe. I’d like to find out if it’s definitely an XL (looked exactly like one) and if it’s registered and also report the fact that it’s managed to get out alone.

ChocolateAddictAlways · 19/12/2024 13:30

I despair when I read these articles. So many little ones maimed or worse, killed, by these dogs :(

Angrywife · 01/01/2025 14:42

I know someone who bought their teenage daughter an xl bully.
They've also got 1 adhd son, and 1 audhd son, and they live in a tiny house.
I dread to think what the outcome will be.

You see people doing really fucking stupid thing like this.

Maybe get a cat? What they think these dogs are going to add to thier lives is beyond me.
