Just seen on the news a baby is in hospital after being bitten by an xl bully. And two people have been arrested. Baby is in a serious condition. Why haven't these killer dogs been banned.

Sorry for my stupidity, but Where did this breed come from, does anyone know how they bred these huge beasts. What did they mix?

They're a mixture of a few different fighting dogs including pitbull and staffordshire bull terrier. I can't remember the others. Most of the ones in this country are descended from a very badly bred, super aggressive thing called Killer Kimbo which is a US dog.

DianaRiggsCatsuit · 12/12/2024 17:50

Even if you supervise an XL bully when it's in the same room as children and it decides to attack, what hope do you have in stopping it? I'm sure it could kill in seconds.

The baby and the dog were 'peas in a pod' according to a family member who spoke to BBC. Whatever the fuck that means.

Probably the baby and dog shared the same bed from day one and the baby crawled all over it.

It means that the baby's deluded and downright stupid family bought into the nonsense about nanny dogs and big soft lumps and bestest boys and wouldn't hurt a flie and the rest of the utter bollocks these imbeciles spout about these animals. Probably lots of pix on social media of the baby propped up against the "bestest boy velvet hippo" and suchlike.

CarmelaBrunella · 12/12/2024 17:52

Too often you hear people refer to dogs as "my baby" or "my boy". They're not, they're animals. It's problematic and leads to situations where people literally treat the dog and the baby in the same way.

You wouldn’t be able to stop it. They are incredibly strong and powerful.

My golden retriever is a big dog, around 85lbs at the moment (11 months). But if she ever went crazy, I know I could over power her/hit her with something.

Those XL bullies are pure muscle.

OrangesCinammonIvy · 12/12/2024 17:53

"they used to snuggle up in the travel cot".

Unfortunately it's clear these people cannot be trusted to make good decisions for their children's safety so unfortunately they must be culled and banned and banned around dc.

Imagine if that baby had our foresight? And whilst couldn't speak understood it's parents choosing to put this beast monster next to it??

CaveMum · 12/12/2024 17:55

For those saying “other breeds have been demonised too” I’ve had a look at the stats on fatalities caused by dogs on Wikipedia - yes not guaranteed to be 100% accurate but as good as we can get. A couple of the fatalities include people who have died from infected dog bites.

Since 1980

Staffie or X - 14 deaths
American Bulldog or X - 12 deaths
Pit Bull or X - 11 deaths
Rottweiler - 8 deaths

Since 2021 (the first year a death was attributed to an XL Bully) there have been 18 deaths attributed to XL/XL X dogs.

So XL bullies have killed more people in less than 4 years than Staffies have in the last 44 years.

Tell me again it’s not the breed…

Can't reply to a comment on here as not entirely sure what I'm doing but was asked why doesn't make me uncomfortable .
Simply because there's a lot of, a huge majority in fact of dogs that are innocent and well rounded loved family pets & genially wouldn't hurt a fly .
I have a Rottweiler , he's a big lad , physically capable of overpowering most people myself included , however he's trained and well behaved , in the 80s this breed was the one that everyone was prejudiced against . Then it was the staffie , then the pit bull .
I don't claim to be an expert but I've never met an aggressive example of any of these breeds .
I don't disagree it's tragic and wholeheartedly agree that a dogs that's attacked cannot be trusted , but we can't simply tar all dogs with the same brush , same as we can't with humans .
Realise that this ' ban ' was going to be an ongoing argument , and we are all entitled to agree to disagree . Personally I think it's a horrendous law & a sweeping generalisation , but that it's my opinion which I stand by .

My greyhound was viciously attacked by a Rottweiler completely without provocation. All breeds can be dangerous and the larger breeds are more dangerous because of the amount of damage they can do.

Ihateboris · 12/12/2024 17:57

Every single one of these psychopathic dogs need to be destroyed. Sadly, the Government will only do something if/when someone in the public eye gets mauled by one. Until then, more innocent people are inevitably going to be attacked and killed!

Lovemusic82 · 12/12/2024 17:58

If someone chooses to have a XL bully in the same house as their children then they should be prepared to be arrested when that dog turns on a child. People keeping these dogs with children are just crazy. Anyone keeping a dangerous animal with children has a responsibility of keeping those children safe from the animal/s so should face the consequences. I hate seeing photos of kids lying/sitting/playing with these dogs, it’s just irresponsible of the parents. It takes a split second for a dog to turn and if a xl bully turns it’s unstoppable. Why would you want that risk around your kids?

Eventually this breed will be eradicated but there will be another breed..something someone will create as a status dog and the same sort of people will buy them…and raise them around their children. There will always be dog attacks and deaths even if this breed is removed.

DragonFly98 · 12/12/2024 17:58

It needs to be illegal for them to be in the same home as an under 18 and that should include visiting not just residency.

Exactly. I'd never have a pet I couldn't physically overpower if it came to it.

CaveMum · 12/12/2024 18:00

Should add those stats I quoted above are from 89 reported deaths since 1980. So XL bullies have been responsible for 20.2% of all deaths, despite only being in existence for 9% of the timeframe.

Porcuporpoise · 12/12/2024 18:01

ForeveronMN · 12/12/2024 17:27

and of course everyone always says the dog was so lovely and it was so 'unexpected'.

Every single time.

It's quite possibly true in most of these cases and that's the point: however lovely and cuddly and individual XL is, it can turn at a moments notice.

Awwww, like all those TikTok reels of baby and fur baby together and everyone says ‘that baby will have a friend and protector for life’

If they escape with their life, of course.

I hope the parents go to prison and the baby goes to loving responsible adoptive parents.

DrZaraCarmichael · 12/12/2024 18:04

It also needs all district nurses, midwives, tradesmen, meter readers, paramedics, health visitors, social workers, police officers, delivery drivers and postmen to refuse to enter a property where one of these chav beasts is living.

McNicey · 12/12/2024 18:05

Petergriffinschins · 12/12/2024 17:49

while it’s usually scum, there are a fair few very middle class people who own them too. Like some sort of reverse snobbery thing.

The instagramer I mentioned, Emma Nicolet (I can mention her, she’s fame hungry with a very public account), has one. Treats the big, ugly thing like it’s a kitten, leaves it alone with her children.

She’s very vocal about how unfair people are about the bred, but keeps her trap shut when things like this happen.

Edited

I just looked her up. Insufferable and crass personality. Shan't be following!!

Seriously though, how anyone can risk their children or any innocent is unfathomable to me - when it is clear these dogs are so very unpredictable with instincts so deadly.

I do think a humane cull needs to happen. Until then more babies and children will be mauled. The government doesn't care enough to properly act.

SweetBobby · 12/12/2024 18:05

It's a disgrace. I hope the poor baby is okay.

slightlydistrac · 12/12/2024 18:12

DarkAndTwisties · 12/12/2024 16:30

The police say that there were no legal grounds to retain the dog, so it is the law that needs looking at imo.

@slightlydistrac that was before the ban was brought in though, so not sure if they'd have had more ability to remove it if it had happened after?

No idea, I'm just repeating what was on the BBC website.

Whatever the law is now, there are a lot of people who think it should be revisited.

The foolish 17 yr old mother and her family drank the Kool Aid with this aggressive dog type.
Human aggression is hardwired into some of these fighting types.

Colby, who developed the dog fighting Pit Bull from which these are crossed , had his little nephew killed by one that he bred from - then it killed an adult man.
Killer Kimbo’s Nico slaughtered a little girl - and hecwas so say her pet!

But it flipped - The mother said “it wanted her- it’s eyes were deranged.
It wouldn’t listen to commands to leave the poor girl- it has to be shot by multiple rounds to retrieve the little girl’s body)

I was having a picnic once and a woman walked near us with the most enormous entire male dog i have ever seen. It was muzzled and she was with a child about 5 or so, a smallish toddler in a pram and a newborn in a sling on her chest. She was about 5 ft 2 and perhaps 7 stone. I'd never seen a dog like that before and said 'Gosh, he's impressive- what is he?' She replied he was a Cane Corso and she had to walk him in isolated places because he was other dog reactive.

I've since found out that Cane Corsos are the next red flag dog that may well be banned. Personally I thought I was looking at a tragedy waiting to happen. Any fucking muppet who thinks a strong and powerful pack animal bred specifically for aggression is a reasonable animal to have in a small family home with small children is insane.

Cane corsos aren’t bred to be aggressive, they are guard dogs more like Rottweilers and other mastiffs. XL Bullies are aggressive in nature, it’s s different type and level of risk. Any large dog, mastiffs, GSDs, large staffies, labradors, Dalmatians is a risk and can cause harm, and fatal harm at that.

Sunbeam01 · 12/12/2024 18:19

Terrifying.

I genuinely worry taking my young children to the local park.

caringcarer · 12/12/2024 18:19

caramac04 · 12/12/2024 14:50

XL’s are just too unpredictable and cause terrible injuries or death on a regular basis.
I met a young mum last week with 2 primary aged children and 1 child in a pushchair.
She told me that they have an XL bully and people cross the street to avoid them. Well I would too as I’d be concerned it might attack and kill my big German Shepherd.
I can’t stop intermittently thinking about 3 young children living with an XL male Bully and worrying what could happen. I don’t suffer with anxiety and am a committed dog lover but I don’t think these dogs should be around children. As has often been said, they are big softies and gentle. Until they’re not and then they are killers. I doubt I could fend one off but innocent children stand no chance.

It's parents like this who as always say things like "X dog is a softie" and are shocked it's happened.
