Just seen on the news a baby is in hospital after being bitten by an xl bully. And two people have been arrested. Baby is in a serious condition. Why haven't these killer dogs been banned.

Some people are so thick they need protecting from themselves . Poor baby .

PandoraSox · 12/12/2024 16:43

I don't think that person knows what peas in a pod means.

Poor child.

Astrabees · 12/12/2024 16:49

There are 40,000 of them registered. Mathematics tells us that only the tiniest percentage cause any problems.

BodenCardiganNot · 12/12/2024 14:44

The baby and the dog were 'peas in a pod' according to a family member who spoke to BBC. Whatever the fuck that means.

It means they're idiots

Peach0123 · 12/12/2024 16:51

This absolutely devastating, yet again. Really hope this little one is going to be okay.

I totally agree on a ban, BUT the XL is not even a breed as such, it's a 'type' It goes back to a few years ago when arseholes started breeding for exactly this type, for looks and the temperament. Getting rid of all of them would be impossible unfortunately. Yes I am aware there may be a select few nice ones who have so far broken the mould temperament wise, hopefully those ones stay that way. These were never to be pets.

Saw a few posters speak on cane Corso and agree These people are using the Corso to breed in to other breeds, (like they did to get XL and do for cockapoo etc) but the cane Corso on its own is NOT a breed for any normal person, they take great experience and dedicated training due to high intelligence, protection instincts and dominant nature. They need to be in the right hands and are now being used for the looks and size. It's madness.

People will continue to get hurt/killed unless there is some kind of dedicated agency with experience given powers to deal with these dogs and hand these people over to police. RSPCA and police just don't have the time, experience or resources. So far nothing has changed except a few owners putting ££ in to registering, muzzles while put and attacks happening in the house.

Viviennemary · 12/12/2024 16:52

Poor baby. Hope baby will be OK. Just read an article on DM website. The baby lives with 17 year old mother, her 18 year old brother and grandmother. The baby and dog were great friends and dog used to get into the travel cot. I despair.

A relative is quoted as saying "It is shocking. You see and hear about it all the time, but you don't actually think it is going to happen to your own family,"

And that's exactly it isn't it? They refuse to accept their dog could snap. No matter how many times they read about the same breed doing exactly that and the owners saying how lovely the dog was.

I do not understand what stops them from thinking hmm, if so many 'beloved family pets' of this breed could turn out of the blue, and kill someone, then mine could too.

But no, they instead choose to make ridiculous nanny dog and gentle nature claims and tell you how next door's chihuahua is far meaner...

Well yes, you undercooked Yorkshire pudding, that chihuahua may well be a gobshite but it's never going to rip a kid's face clean off now is it?

@Goody2ShoesAndTheFilthyBeast spot on !
2 of DP's family have these dogs (and Cane Corso's) and they are obviously different, so good with the children....... It's terrifying. (and a whole other thread!)
We don't really have anything to do with them so saves having to make excuses not to visit. I have lost count of the times they try and convince us that a Jack Russell is more vicious.
You just can't fix stupid !

Can't reply to a comment on here as not entirely sure what I'm doing but was asked why doesn't make me uncomfortable .
Simply because there's a lot of, a huge majority in fact of dogs that are innocent and well rounded loved family pets & genially wouldn't hurt a fly .
I have a Rottweiler , he's a big lad , physically capable of overpowering most people myself included , however he's trained and well behaved , in the 80s this breed was the one that everyone was prejudiced against . Then it was the staffie , then the pit bull .
I don't claim to be an expert but I've never met an aggressive example of any of these breeds .
I don't disagree it's tragic and wholeheartedly agree that a dogs that's attacked cannot be trusted , but we can't simply tar all dogs with the same brush , same as we can't with humans .
Realise that this ' ban ' was going to be an ongoing argument , and we are all entitled to agree to disagree . Personally I think it's a horrendous law & a sweeping generalisation , but that it's my opinion which I stand by .

Every one needs to be neutered or euthanized and let this generation be the last of their blood lines. They have no place in the family home or as working dogs

Simonjt · 12/12/2024 17:01

We have a dog, possibly the most ignorant dog to ever live, he’s a shiba inu, so not small, but not big either, we don’t leave him alone with our three year old despite the fact that he ignores her and if she was irritating behind our backs he wouldn’t bite her, but it wouldn’t be fair on him as we know she’d poke the hell out of him and generally be unpleasant.

It really isn’t hard to keep young children and dogs apart, its even easier with an actual baby. If someone doesn’t want that faff thats fine, but it means dog ownership isn’t for you.

And, of course the dog was named 'Hunter' 🙄

It won't work because the meatheads will just find another breed , they'll breed dangerous dogs and not care what happens .
All the prevention talk is about the dogs when in reality society should deal with these people with no social responsibility

Yes, we should ban a whole breed. XL's are nasty creatures and owned by thickies who put everyone at risk.

OrlandointheWilderness · 12/12/2024 17:09

God that interview is just awful. It used to follow the baby around, she used to climb all over it. What fucking idiot thinks it's okay, I wouldn't let a child climb all over our soft as shit lab or spaniel let alone something like that.

When 'the problems' are children being maimed or dying then I don't think it really matters how small a percentage it is and I'm genuinely surprised anyone could make that argument.

How many dead children is an OK number of dead children? Keep it under that amount and the breed's good to go, aye?

Absolutely.

snoopysnoooper · 12/12/2024 17:11

There's a woman near me who has two (what I think) are XL bullies. She's on crutches and lets them off lead on the park, and they have no recall at all. They are 'friendly' but when I saw them from afar the other day, I stood and made my pup wait for a long time until they left and we could pass through to get home. When my pup was tiny they came bounding up to us and scared the shit out of me, and their owner was nowhere to be seen. I couldn't even stand between them and my pup, and if they had decided they didn't like him for whatever reason we'd have stood no chance.

These two dogs terrify me and we see them all the time. I'm not sure if they are XL bullies or another similar breed but they aren't muzzled so maybe not? Are there any breeds which look similar? They are about twice the size of a staffy.

Petergriffinschins · 12/12/2024 17:12

You’ve got to be an idiot to have one of those dogs.

There is a very annoying woman on Instagram who has an XL bully. She’s always posting about how gentle he is, how soppy. She posts videos of him alone, outside with her young daughters. Absolute madness.

I’ve got a soppy golden retriever. I don’t leave her in a room alone with my young child.

menopausalfart · 12/12/2024 17:13

Any dog breed shouldn't be left alone around a baby, no matter how docile it is. XLs shouldn't be around young children full-stop. If you can't intervene if that dog turns nasty what chance does a child have?

I have seen a photo of the beautiful little baby I hope they pull through, also a registered one so angry that poor baby and reckless parents I presume are the two arrested

Looks like 18 year old man and 70+ woman, so could be dad/brother/uncle and a grandmother.

They also seem more bothered that the dog was shot dead and focus more on the horrible animal than the fact the poor baby has been airlifted to hospital and is seriously hurt!
