The midnight cuppa

Went to bed at 9.30pm and woke at midnight, just me here tonight so I can do as I please so it’s tea and toast and a scroll.

this is becoming a bit of a habit waking up for a cuppa, a scroll, and then going back to bed, am I the only one?

@Songlines you’re very welcome

I stood outside just after I posted in the beginning of the rain
All the lights on the driveway came on and I’m sure the neighbours across the way thought I was probably totally mad. it was lovely

We had a good down pour at some point and the bird bath which was dry is about half full and it’s a lot cooler now

Hoping the floods missed Fife (I think my granny was born there during the first world War as her father built ships I think and was up there, might have that wrong).

Hopefully, everyone is now a lot cooler.
I feel absolutely shattered and we really should be out and across the field by now but I think we’ve got the luxury of leaving it a little while

There were shipyards in Methil and in Burntisland, so that might be where your granny was born.

If you ever want to check, you can log onto Scotland's People - it's the official website for the main registrar in Scotland.

https://www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk/

Even I can use it. You pay around a tenner (I think) to obtain credits. You pop in the person's name and "Fife" in the drop down menu plus the year range. It then brings up any matching registrar entries. You only pay when you click on a certificate to read it, so you don't even have to pay for credits until you reach that stage.

In fact, you don't even have to click on the entry and pay - you can just have a look to see whether there is one, if you see what I mean.

@WearyAuldWumman thank you, I’ll go see if I can find granny, never thought to look for her on Scotlands People, DH’s mum was from Dunbartonshire and I’ve used it to try and look for her (long story as she’s not who we thought she was) She died when DH was a baby and he was brought up nearer London by his fathers family. Gran’s family were just up there in the war, the rest of her sisters were born in Poplar (can’t watch call the midwife without think of her growing up around there).

I was on it quite a lot looking for DH's folk. Short version - Mum and Dad were actually Step-gran and Grandad.

We eventually found out a bit more, but just missed finding his birth mum by four years. We did find his siblings, however, and they've been lovely.

Themidnightcuppa · 03/07/2025 22:42

@WearyAuldWumman, thank you, found granny on Scotlands People, never ever thought to look tbh, also found out she was a year older than I thought too.

WearyAuldWumman · 03/07/2025 23:03

Oh, that's great that you found her. Without asking you to give too much detail, I'm curious to know whether she actually was a fly Fifer, then?

Themidnightcuppa · 04/07/2025 22:35

@WearyAuldWumman , I went away and looked that up. Nope, she was lovely, warm and funny. (Assuming I got right what you mean 😀)

have wondered a bit more about what her father was actually doing up there. He built ships I think but what sort etc, all her family worked on the river Thames down here.

I'm sitting here giggling.

My late husband was from Aberdeenshire. He used to tell folk that he was doing missionary work in Fife!

I recall hearing that Prince Philip's ship docked in Methil for repairs during the war and that he expressed his shock and disdain for the place...

Themidnightcuppa · 05/07/2025 00:54

😂😂😂😂
well I’ll have to let you know. Over the weekend I’ve decided to sign up for the a bit of family history digging. I went down a rabbit hole earlier reading up on the Thames lightermen who I know were running boats between London and Chatham or somewhere Medway towns. Ours all got bombed out during the war and ended up in Kent. Granny met grandad hop picking.

Oh, that's lovely.

My dad was a Displaced Person after the war. He met my mum at a housewarming - his pal (another DP coalminer) married Mum's best friend.

As a teenager I turned to Mum and said "So if it hadn't been for Adolf Hitler, I wouldn't have been born!"

Mum was not amused.

Dave saw the canine physio recently, she says he’s got to build his muscles up so I got him some cones and poles they use in dog agility and we have a small setup in the garden he trots over for a bit of cauli or the odd green bean. He’s also very naughty and steals the orange cone and dashes round the garden and will only let it go for a slurp of soft tube cheese (now considering tent pegging down the poles). Blooming dog.

we are now pretty much back to normal, made it to the end of field two twice this week. Dear Dave is snoring in the kitchen and I can hear him from here, I can’t decide whether to go downstairs and have a cup of tea or just put on an episode of Lucy Worsley.

I should be in bed, but I've been trying to organise my bag for the wedding trip. I'm trying to manage with just carry-on luggage in case there's a problem with transit on the way back - I only have an hour between the return flights.

I figure that if I indulge myself and take my tankini, the bottom can serve as extra knickers. I think I'll finish up packing and then taking stuff out.

Themidnightcuppa · 09/07/2025 09:09

Before I knew DH he told me he bought paper pants. He’d gone to a disco and kept seeing little bits of paper on the dance floor. When he got home all that was left of his pants were three bits of elastic, one around his waist and the other two at the top of his legs 😂

Brilliant!

My older cousin used to sing a song which - apparently - had been a minor hit for Barbara Windsor in the '60s: "Please don't put stickers/ on my paaaaaaper knickers!"

Finally got my hobby stuff properly out of the cupboard and setup. Intending on spending the next few hot days holed up in my spare bedroom playing with all my kit I haven’t really seen for best part of a year.

Dave is lightly snoring on the floor at the bottom of my bed, it’s cooler up here than downstairs and as long as he’s not farting he’s welcome. He’ll probably disappear at some point as he prefers his delux bed in the kitchen.

we were out before 6.30am this morning and met four different dog friends which was nice as we haven’t seen anyone for a while. Everyone is pleased to see him so well.

cant decide whether to go get some tea now or see how I go (trouble is it’s quite hot here and the mini magnums are calling) I keep telling myself to be sensible but hey ho I can do as I like and no one’s watching me. 😂

Gosh it’s warm but a cuppa is cooling beside me. Dave and I are away at a friends. He’s in the kitchen laying on the cool tiles and won’t be moved.

all the windows are open and I can hear seagulls. I thought they’d be asleep! I wish I could sleep. Tomorrow is a fun day and I’m going to be shattered. Hopefully your all Zzzzzz

@Themidnightcuppa Been following. It's been a while since you posted, so thought I'd that check you're ok. ☺️

Themidnightcuppa · 03/09/2025 12:56

I’m still here. I sleep pretty much every night all the way through now. It’s very rare that I don’t. It’s been eight months since I lost DH. So much has changed and life is nothing like it was but im slowly getting used to things.

Dave is good, we can manage the full walk now, although he hates rain and the wet so we’ve hardly been ou these past couple of days.

how is baby havoc?

I'm so glad to hear it. ☺️
It does take a while to figure out what your normal is, doesn't it? Being able to sleep helps.
I'm in Vancouver, Canada. I think we've had rain twice this summer.
When I joined MN Havoc was just over 1 and will be 4 soon. I'm really mourning Havoc's "babyhood" being gone. I do have another I call "Baby" here who will be 2 soon. So, Havoc and Baby. Growing too fast. 😭

Been up since 4am, had tea, a scroll, accidentally woke Dave up so he’s trotting around now probably thinking where’s his breakfast.

it won’t be long before I can draw back the curtains and see if the birds are on top of the houses opposite. Can’t remember the last time I did that or not slept the night The fog of the last few months is starting to lift and I have a gut renching need to push on and live again.
