The midnight cuppa

Themidnightcuppa · 09/12/2024 00:45

Went to bed at 9.30pm and woke at midnight, just me here tonight so I can do as I please so it’s tea and toast and a scroll.

this is becoming a bit of a habit waking up for a cuppa, a scroll, and then going back to bed, am I the only one?

@Themidnightcuppa the surgery did go well. It was unexpected emergency surgery and ended up quite a big job in the end, but I'm recovering well.

I'll be on coffee duty in the morning, bringing one to OH in bed.

It's been a few years since I could go to sleep and not wake until 7 or 8 hours later. I now have two sleeps every night! Waking up after a couple of hours is annoying but nothing I can do about it. I'm lucky I don't have to get up early so manage to get enough shut eye. It may be an age thing (am over 60) 🙄

I'm much the same. Also in my 60s.

SprostenGreen · 09/12/2024 01:42

I have found myself in a two sleeps pattern. I quite like it. If I can i
will sleep as it goes dark, then will wake up in time for an evening meal, bit of telly, some work (I was a night owl, maybe I am not now!) and then back to sleep about 2am.

Themidnightcuppa · 09/12/2024 08:00

Hope everyone had a good second sleep or first if you had not been to sleep.

decided to make a tea and watch the birds out of the bedroom window with a nice cuppa. Not a sodding bird, never remember that happening . They Must be outside DH’s hospital window. 😃😃😃

I am a bit miffed to be still awake, long day tomorrow and need to be up early. DH may be discharged tomorrow so I want to go do lots of things before they let him home.

CurlewKate · 11/12/2024 01:03

I do two sleeps. I often wake at about 3, do Wordle and Connections with a cup of tea and go back to sleep. I found having a newborn a breeze because I wasn't used to sleeping through the night either!

Themidnightcuppa · 11/12/2024 01:10

This hopefully is my last night of being able to have a cuppa without worrying about waking DH. He will probably have me awake several times a night from now on, not that I’ll mind as I’ve missed him terribly.

hoping he will be able to do our travel’s Christmas ornaments together in a few days time, we put them on the tree and reminisce where we bought them.

Wishing you well tonight, @Themidnightcuppa and your DH, and a merry Christmas.

Sweet dreams. (In Italy they say sogni d'oro).

WearyAuldWumman · 11/12/2024 02:04

I've cracked - have taken 3.75mg of zoplicone.

Had volunteered to help out charity with interpreting. Got a phone call today, wanting me to translate a couple of 'short leaflets'. The one that actually came through had 30 pages.

I explained that good practice nowadays is only to translate into your native language, not out of it. At the very least, they should get a native speaker to proofread.

They want to use AI to proofread. I did the first couple of paragraphs. Ran through the only AI available to me - Google translate. GT approves of most of it but is urging me to use two words which have totally different meanings in the target version. Their idea ain't going to work.

Then I got a text telling my number had been passed to the bloke who phoned me...but for ethics and insurance [?] they need to know whether I'm registered at an angency or freelance.

Neither. I'm a retired schoolteacher who happened to do a language degree which included a 5 month interpteting course in Russian...more than 40 yrs ago.

Have told them they need to find someone else. As soon as the mentioned ethics and insurance...

If they get back to me, I'm going to suggest they conact St Andrews or Glasgow Uni.

I'm nearly 65 and too old for this nonsense. Also a bit perturbed by "happy to do a bit of interpreting" being turned into high level translation work.

The last time I did translation work, I helped a colleague's sister. She was researching for an academic and they needed three articles on "Urinary Incontinence in Women" translated from Russian into English. Now, that's doable. I was pleased to help and payment was a bunch of flowers and a wee bag of chocolates.

I don't want embroiled in officialdom with a high profile charity.

Zoplicone! (Onely one tablet.)

That is just the wee wee really isn’t it.

I’ve just turned 60, used to do all sorts of pleasing volunteer things but one day I got moved from the back of the charity shop to the front, split from my friend and told I was jolly capable of doing the till so please get on with it.

so I pleased myself and didn’t go back.

now I’m really selfish and only do the things I want to do. Especially after the last monster cake I only charged ingredients for apparently wasn’t quite up to my usual standard.

That's atrocious! I'm glad you stuck up for yourself.

The other one that I had was when I volunteered to help out a local migrants' forum. Again, I'd said that I could interpret for Russian speakers and and was happy to teach English as a Second Language. (I have experience of teaching English as a Second Language in Scottish high schools and they have a cafe set up for people who want to learn English.)

Got a phone call asking whether my car insurance was up to date. They wanted me to drive young men to job interviews, etc. Eh...no. Not happening.

There seems to be this mindset that because you're retired you're now free labour for anything people want you to do.

Themidnightcuppa · 16/12/2024 01:55

Well I suppose this is the 2am cuppa. Trouble is I’ve not been to sleep yet. I am going to be knackered before I start tomorrow. I’ve got a two hour meeting with DH’s carers company here tomorrow.

The upstairs is horrendously messy. I’m hoping that because he’s going to be downstairs they’ll not need to come up here. In both spare rooms I’ve emptied huge cupboards looking for things I think I’ll need for him coming home next week. one room you can’t get in for piles of DD boxed stuff (she’s travelling) that I’ve had to move to find bedding I thought I’d not use again this year. Why is it always the last box and right at the back.

I’ve emptied the dishwasher and made a cuppa, I find it very odd that a caffeinated drink sends me to sleep, I suppose it’s a comforting thing we do drinking tea.

OP posts:
WearyAuldWumman · 16/12/2024 01:58

I'm still decluttering...My house is still cluttered, but it's not as bad as it was. (Don't look at the living room! I'm still sorting through clothes - I have little piles all over the couch. I've already put out most of the biggest sizes.)

I've also thrown out dead plants...

I nipped over to the Garden of Remembrance in the afternoon and left Christmas arrangements and a flower arrangement for Dad - would have been his birthday this weekend.

Heading for a warm milk with a shot of port.

FuckItItsFine · 16/12/2024 02:06

@WearyAuldWumman 💐 Christmas arrangements sound lovely.

I don’t work on Mondays so I’m staying up late. DH had an early night as he’s got a horrible cold/sore throat.

I’ve got a hot mug of Twinings Buttermint tea and I’m bingeing Peep Show for the thousandth time.

Themidnightcuppa · 16/12/2024 02:07

Wow, you’ve been busy. I’ve been slowly decluttering this past year. I have those thick heavy duty shop bags full of receipts and paperwork to finish going through. DH and I shredded a whole filing cabinet earlier in the year down to one drawer. Very satisfying and I’m now into chucking and shredding unneeded papers when they arrive in the house.

Enjoy the port, think my teas kicked in as I’m sleepy now. Nite nite.

Middlemarch123 · 16/12/2024 02:49

I have two sleeps too, if anyone is awake and still reading. Have got into this habit naturally since quitting work as a teacher earlier this year. I’m in my sixties too. I like going to bed really early, especially in the winter and wake about 2 a.m. I have a cup of hot Vimto or Whittards Nighttime tea and scroll on here or play Animal Crossing on my switch because it’s so gentle, thenI go back to sleep about 4. Cats share the bed and don’t seem to mind too much.
sweet dreams and hoping tomorrow is a good day for you all.

Themidnightcuppa · 20/12/2024 03:28

Darn it. It’s now the wretched 3am cuppa, trouble is I’ve not been to sleep. There’s loud crashing tree smashing chainsaw noises from down the lane. It’s going to be carnage, started just after midnight, lots of posts on village fb but I doubt the police will get involved. There’s going to be an another huge mobile home in the field where they’ve been told to get rid of the current one.

I’ve wrapped presents, had two cups of tea and tried twice to sleep but the sounds of splintering trees is very distressing, it was a lovely walk in summer as the trees met above the road and made it a lovely shady walk. Doesn’t sound as if there will be a tree left standing.

I’m up too, can’t sleep for some reason. Phone isn’t helping but I keep getting ideas I need to write down. I’d go down for a ‘sleep’ tea (twinings) but I’m lazy and also scared of the dark. Just wrote a pretty good poem though.

Oh and I mean to say I hope your husband is well again soon.

Edited

Scared, in your own house? Just turn the lights on if you're scared of the dark.

ive just walked down to the post box, (pray my cards will get there before Christmas! Long story - don't ask! The answer will bore you to sleep!). It was very dark as I'm in an area where the street lights are turned off from 1am to 5 am.

I was a little wary as it's so dark, but more of tripping over than anyone else!!

need to go and try to get some sleep, I'm going through a very bad patch of not being able to get to sleep (no matter what time I go to bed) I try not to hernia, or that's me fir the day. My body will not do a second getting to sleep!!

sorry to hear about the unwell DH's xx

Middlemarch123 · 20/12/2024 03:43

Woke up ten minutes ago @Themidnightcuppa , that’s so sad about the trees, I don’t know how that can happen, of course you’re feeling distressed, I am too on your behalf. Do you use earplugs? I got a pack of soft comfy ones from Amazon, and they make such a difference. We get a group of boy racers on motorbikes round here who seem to be nocturnal, also I can’t bear the sound of the wind, so I use them to lessen that noise too.

Have you tried listening to white noise to help try and drift off to sleep?
I have an almost 4 month old baby and struggle to get back to sleep once I’ve been up for a feed. I find her white noise machine helps me clear my head and drift off aswell!
Hope your husband is recovering well at home!

Bastards. Hope one if the neighbours has got some good video of them & some good mug shots!

I’m back, it’s been a sh*t few weeks. DH made it out of hospital but passed away peacefully the other day, sort of expected but maybe not so quickly.

id love to disappear downstairs for a cuppa and I’m hungry but my family is staying and I don’t want to disturb them.

id quite like to do a massive dejunk of my bedroom but can’t do that either.

the lane was carnage, I’ve seen pictures but can’t bear to go look properly 🙁

@Themidnightcuppa I've just found and read this thread for the first time after being woken by DDog snoring. I reached the final, most recent post and had to respond to say I'm so very sorry for your loss.

I'm sure your family wouldn't begrudge you popping downstairs to make a cuppa, they might even join you.

I'm trying not to stress about lack of sleep, listening to a podcast, tinkering on Mumsnet and stroking DDogs ears whilst he snores.

Thevelvelletes · 10/01/2025 01:19

@Themidnightcuppa sorry for your loss as pp said pop down for that cuppa someone may join you that also can't sleep.
