If not Lurpak, what?

PolaDeVeboise · 07/12/2024 14:36

I like the 'white' butter of Lurpak, as opposed to the 'yellow' of most. Can anyone recommend a decent alternative?

If it's because Lurpark is too expensive then Lidl Danpak is a good alternative.
If it's because of the conspiracy theorists approach to Arla/Bovaer then Lurpak is just fine.

Andoutcomethewolves · 08/12/2024 10:18

I've switched to Danepak which is Lidl's version. About half the price and basically the same.

Sainsbury’s So Organic slightly salted

This.

Of course, if you are a conspiracy theorist, or believe nonsense on the internet over peer reviewed work by qualified scientists, then you probably need to be aware that Arla make a lot of supermarket own brand products with exactly the same milk used to make Lurpak etc.

I've been to one of their factories for work. Last time I was there, they were filling containers for Waitrose and Lidl.

How does wanting to eat organic make someone a conspiracy theorist?!

Radishknot · 08/12/2024 10:27

Why can’t we eat lurpak?

Where did I suggest that?

A block of (organic if you want to definitely avoid Bovaer) salted butter with the ingredients reading cream and salt. I don't understand how people are still eating spreads!

I don't understand how people are eating SO much butter (or horrible spreads). I buy a block of butter every 4/5 months and cut it up putting it in the freezer apart from what I need at that time. I'm reading that people are putting butter on their sandwiches then spreads! Bizarre.

Radishknot · 08/12/2024 10:31

Well I make my block last a decade so you need to try harder 🙄

harriethoyle · 08/12/2024 10:32

Aldi nordpak is the best lurpak dupe I’ve found

Radishknot · 08/12/2024 10:32

And if you are so flummoxed that some people manage to eat more butter then you then you probably need to get out a little more…

MarmaladeSideDown · 08/12/2024 10:34

At least all of this shenanigans is hopefully going to reduce the price of butter, which has reached ridiculous levels of late.

Nsky62 · 08/12/2024 10:34

PolaDeVeboise · 07/12/2024 16:36

Either really. I use block and spreadable Lurpak at the moment. Yes, it is down to the additive thing..

President unsalted the best, block

Where did anyone say how much butter they used and surely you must know that eeking out a block over a few months isn't a typical usage pattern. We probably use 2-3 blocks a month, on toast, sandwiches, for cooking eg frying omelettes and in baking.

What surprises me about all this is that apparently supermarkets are now reducing or even giving away pallets of Lurpak because so many people have stopped buying it. But this only appears to have come up in the last few days, most people will be completely unaware of it, and Lurpak has a few weeks date on it so it's not like people have all suddenly stopped buying a short lived product.

fruitpastille · 08/12/2024 10:42

If you want to avoid the additive just buy organic. If you want adupe for lurpack spreadable, norpak from aldi has identical ingredients. I found listening to Inside Science on radio 4 quite reassuring. Inside science

You’re the outlier. Butter in sandwiches is perfectly normal.

To blow your mind I used 3 blocks this week making a birthday cake

Dontwearmysocks · 08/12/2024 10:47

I’m looking for a butter which is Bovaer free, Lurpak is on the shit list now….

any recommendations?

Nordpak from aldi, no idea who actually makes it, but it tastes almost the same as lurpak

I use Nordpak. Does anyone know if this is affected please?

All butter is Bovaer free.
It's scaremongering folk who are suggesting otherwise.

No.
No butters will contain Bovaer.
It's scaremongering to suggest otherwise.

Is Lurpak cheaper now so I can stock up

HashtagShitShop · 08/12/2024 10:53

M and s have a beautiful butter that has salt crystals in, it's beautiful (of salty butter is your thing.) we tend to only get it during December/christmas so it's a treat as getting to an m and s foodhall is a real pain in the bum.
