Well it's not meant to hit my area (north east coast ) till around 11am but I'm meant to be heading to Durham (1 hour train ) for a festive afternoon tea with a friend.
She lives in Durham and says it's okay for now.
According to the weather like I say it's moving over this way.
Would you risk it ?
Or not ?

No.

HPandthelastwish · 07/12/2024 08:19

Do you have the money to stay in a Premier Inn or similar if the trains stop?

If it's gusting more than 50 I wouldn't.

blinddoorshyt · 07/12/2024 08:20

This is our forecast
They are guessing 70 mph max gust

Would you go out in this storm?

I’d still go however if you’re relying on a train for transport I’d have a back up planned

mitogoshigg · 07/12/2024 08:21

Yes, currently under red warning here but it's really not that bad. Be sensible, don't go for a walk under trees but I would make essential journeys and am heading to the Mall in a bit, it's opening late at midday.

blinddoorshyt · 07/12/2024 08:21

Not sounding great is it

No unfortunately I am relying on public transport
Wouldn't pay Saturday night hotel prices either

I would make tea and cake and set up a zoom call with your friend to catch up at home instead.

Pepperama · 07/12/2024 08:23

No, I’d sit it out if you’re not back before then or staying over anyway - too high a risk if fallen branches on line somewhere with resulting chaos

That’s the only thing that would concern me, if they decided to cancel trains

TheChosenTwo · 07/12/2024 08:23

I am, yellow warning here for wind in my area of the SE, it’s blowy but I need to pick dd up, she’s about 15 miles away but her trains have been cancelled and she’s stranded otherwise.
Ds has had his football match cancelled.

blinddoorshyt · 07/12/2024 08:25

I honestly don't want to go
I just know friend is going to be mad if I don't go and she will probably stop speaking with me.
I hate upsetting people
My partner says I should cancel and is annoyed that I would even consider it

MsXmasGGMasterTwat · 07/12/2024 08:27

I’ve got to drive tonight to pick up DC1. Tbh if it were anything else I’d cancel because I’ll be on country roads and I don’t think it’s worth the risk in the winds. Similar forecast to you OP.

I wouldn’t go if I had to catch the train. Even yesterday there was a tree blown on a line near me causing massive disruption and the wind was nowhere near today’s forecast.

You’re safer on the train of course. I wouldn’t go because I wouldn’t want the potential disruption.

She'd stop speaking to you? If you make your own risk assessment and decide it's better to stay home?
Let her. That's honestly bonkers. Stay home @blinddoorshyt .

blinddoorshyt · 07/12/2024 08:30

It's also the walk to and from the station which is around 15 mins each way so a good 30 mins of walking there and back which if the wind is with the rain isn't going to be nice is it

NooNakedJacuzziness · 07/12/2024 08:32

Doesn't sound like much of a friend OP! Most people would understand

SENMUMwhatnext · 07/12/2024 08:32

I’m debating this. We’re only in a yellow weather warning. I would be concerned about the train being cancelled.

UtterlyOtterly · 07/12/2024 08:32

If she would stop speaking to you then she's not a true friend. Cut your losses and stay at home.

Our family WhatsApp has been busy this morning, dithering then cancelling a get together. Amber as well as yellow warnings involved, the consensus is better safe than sorry.

WorriedRelative · 07/12/2024 08:33

If the trains stop running would she put you up for the night?

Put the ball in her court. If yes, then go, if no then you've given her an option

blinddoorshyt · 07/12/2024 08:35

@WorriedRelative she would but she lives around 15 mins from centre of Durham and it would be a nightmare for me to get home
She lives near bishop middleham which has no direct trainline

WhatTheKey · 07/12/2024 08:36

You shouldn't be worried about a friend's reaction at you taking a decision about your own safety OP. Are you sure you want friends like that?
We're in a red zone and bloody hell. It's severe.

She isn't much of a friend if she's going to shout at you for not going out for a piece of cake. If she decides not to speak to you because of this then maybe you should let the friendship fade and die. Friendships should make you feel better, not stressed .

SallyWD · 07/12/2024 08:43

No. I wouldn't.have postponed my plans for today

blinddoorshyt · 07/12/2024 09:05

I'm honestly so torn
