Would you go out in this storm?

Well it's not meant to hit my area (north east coast ) till around 11am but I'm meant to be heading to Durham (1 hour train ) for a festive afternoon tea with a friend.
She lives in Durham and says it's okay for now.
According to the weather like I say it's moving over this way.
Would you risk it ?
Or not ?

I can't as all of the roads around me are blocked! We are lucky as everyone nearer to the village centre has no power - ours is flickering. Fire and candles lit in anticipation! We are on top of a hill and it's a crazy windy, coming from straight on.

tappitytaptap · 07/12/2024 15:24

Yes I would, have, and am going out this evening. But generally I find people on mumsnet a lot more cautious than me and very much on the side of 'safety'

Calmhappyandhealthy · 07/12/2024 15:24

It's worse now (wind) than it was last night. And that was very bad. Wales

yes it's called being sensible

LookingForAHandHold · 07/12/2024 16:08

@icelolly12 that's just normal winter weather though. Happens every year

tappitytaptap · 07/12/2024 16:10

You think it's sensible, I think it's over cautious. It's fine to disagree you know. People that cancel plans and don't see friends for these sorts of reasons are the ones losing out, not me.

Depends where you are? In a red zone?

We're not and did normal stuff but not every where has the same impact

Beezknees · 07/12/2024 16:28

I've been out today, we're in a yellow zone and it's really not that bad. Depends where you are.

MsXmasGGMasterTwat · 07/12/2024 16:38

Yellow zone here and it’s hideous! Tree branches all over the place. Wheelie Bins in the road. Really windy.

😂completely. Some of the pps, I can imagine, will be the ones in airports complaining that their flights are delayed "just because of weather." They will be the ones demanding the planes take off "because it is just a bit of wind and rain."

blinddoorshyt · 07/12/2024 17:51

@Coffeecakelatte not sure if you have seen the devil wears prada ...Meryl Streep fuming when she couldn't get a plane because of a little drizzle (tornado outside ) 😂

I ventured out to Newcastle, by Metro. The service is reduced, but we were fine. We have a refugee pair, mam and daughter; she and my daughter were climbing the walls, so me and her mam took them to the Hancock Museum.

My daughter was whingeing bitterly about the cold and wet, I wasn't hugely impressed. She said, "Wow! Why are there waves on that puddle?!" There's roadworks outside Haymarket Metro and some of the heavy barriers had been blown down.

biscuitsandbooks · 07/12/2024 17:56

We're in an Amber area - the roads are fine but it is really windy so I'm not sure I'd want to be out unless I absolutely had to be. I had a horse to feed so had no choice - the horse wasn't remotely bothered Grin

LookingForAHandHold · 07/12/2024 18:17

Still very breezy here but nothing we haven't seen before. It's dropped about 12 degrees since this morning though and it is absolutely freezing!! Nice hot bath in order for me

MrsSchnickelfritz · 07/12/2024 18:24

Sounds like you made the right decision. Its wild where I am, all buses cancelled and multiple trees down/roads blocked with various debris.

Sugarandrice · 07/12/2024 18:49

blinddoorshyt · 07/12/2024 13:24

it's honestly wild now
I am on the coast tho so maybe that's why it seems a bit stronger.
Just checked and all the trains into Durham are pretty much 45 mins plus delayed
So pleased I didn't go
Hope everyone stays warm and cosy

I haven’t RTFT only your updates but you were quite right not to go. Your friend sounds selfish. I would ditch her! She doesn’t seem to care about you.

If someone felt they had to cancel on me, even if I was disappointed I wouldn’t push it - especially if the reason they gave was safety related.

I had a friend visit London from abroad, I booked a train to go visit her but unfortunately the train was cancelled that morning and there was a notice of major rail disruption for the whole day.

She totally understood I didn’t want to travel anymore, because I might get stranded /have a very hard time getting back. I just seen her the next time she was in the country and I also visited her in her country recently too.

I think it does. I'm in Herts but fairly rural and a lot of open fields which don't give a lot of protection. We're in the yellow zone. It's still blowing a hooly out there, still raining. I am glad I didn't make my planned long journey today because it wouldn't have been safe. The wind is not as strong as it was this morning but it's still strong.
