Would you go out in this storm?

Well it's not meant to hit my area (north east coast ) till around 11am but I'm meant to be heading to Durham (1 hour train ) for a festive afternoon tea with a friend.
She lives in Durham and says it's okay for now.
According to the weather like I say it's moving over this way.
Would you risk it ?
Or not ?

You sound like a shit friend. People find any reason to cancel now on friends and think it’s ok. Not surprised she isn’t happy.

My God.

blinddoorshyt · 07/12/2024 11:37

I'm certainly not a "shit " friend but i am not risking walking to the train station at 9pm tonight whilst blowing a gale and hoping my train isn't cancelled

I have an out of hours appointment with a GP at lunch time (similar area than you).
I AM GOING.
No way I’m missing that.

In your place, I would have gone. By car. (Because yes trains are more likely to be unreliable)

RubyRedBow · 07/12/2024 11:39

No. I’m north east and staying home - it’s chucking it down and the winds picking up.

Coffeecakelatte · 07/12/2024 11:39

heldinadream · 07/12/2024 08:29

She'd stop speaking to you? If you make your own risk assessment and decide it's better to stay home?
Let her. That's honestly bonkers. Stay home @blinddoorshyt .

Your friend should be worried about your safety op, not the plans. It is okay for her, she isn't the one travelling. I bet she would be the first to cancel if it was the other way around. I'd she is huffed about this, than she needs to grow up, and I would be reconsidering if this is the kind of friend you want.

Any reason? Like government warning to stay in, possibly trains cancelled, trees down in roads, risk to life reason?
Fuck me.

blinddoorshyt · 07/12/2024 08:25

I honestly don't want to go
I just know friend is going to be mad if I don't go and she will probably stop speaking with me.
I hate upsetting people
My partner says I should cancel and is annoyed that I would even consider it

Then she isn’t a good friend at all.

The red warning only covers a very small portion of the country.

It’s still awful in the north east though.

Cornettoninja · 07/12/2024 11:42

Based on locations you’ve said in your posts I did a test journey and the first one is cancelled.

honestly I would appreciate being able to foresee issues and take the hint from the universe (or MET office!) that a bit of cake isn’t worth it today.

Would you go out in this storm?

I'm in London and it's dreadful here. I should be going to the post office to send some parcels but having seen my garden furniture blown across the garden there is no way I'm stepping out there.

OP your 'friend' is no friend otherwise she wouldn't want you taking unnecessary risks by travelling to her for an afternoon tea FFS!

JXBc · 07/12/2024 11:56

This @blinddoorshyt absolutely what @LetThereBeLove said x 1 million.

Even if it were risk free in a danger sense (which I don't think you can say for sure it isn't), the weather is really really horrible and to expect you to travel 1 hour there and one hour back + 15 min walk x 2 (in driving rain and big winds) + leaving at 10pm when it will be pitch black is not a nice journey. Just the thought of the return journey will spoil your afternoon.

If she can't see this isn't a fair thing to expect from you, she is no friend. If she's that keen to see you, she can come to you but it isn't about that is it or even seeing you? What it is about is she has booked this festive tea and wants that. She can go on her own or take another local friend.

I don't think this is a nice person tbh.

Idratherbepaddleboarding · 07/12/2024 11:58

It’s extremely windy here, I am venturing out to take DS to get his haircut after qualifying cut and attend our village Christmas market but only because they’re very local. A long journey would be a nope from me, a long journey by train absolutely fucking not!!

Very wet but not very windy here yet as I said earlier to the OP I wouldn’t go as she is using public transport but other wise I would go out and have been out earlier today.

MabelsBeats · 07/12/2024 12:08

We’re in a yellow warning area, and I had to get one of the DD’s to a tutoring session this morning. Our electric gates toiled to open, and coming back in they toiled even more, I thought we were going to get stuck on the wrong side of them!

The plan was to go and choose our Christmas tree this afternoon but it’s gusting 65mph according to the weather app. I’m disappointed as we’re busy tomorrow so we’ve not time to get it then, but unless the wind and gusts die down we’ll be staying in I think! 😭🎄

Disturbia81 · 07/12/2024 12:47

Just went to pick the dogs poo up in the garden and me and the 2 dogs were nearly blown into the bushes, that's enough outside for me today. I feel for anyone who has to go out in it

blinddoorshyt · 07/12/2024 12:57

Well there's a tree down top of our street
So pleased I didn't go now

I’m on the west coast which is bearing the brunt of the storm. I walked to the gym and back this morning. It’s fine. Just very gusty. It’s just weather.

SinnerBoy · 07/12/2024 13:05

Damn, I wish a tree was down on our street, so we could have it for the wood burner!

So not using public transport at all. The Op can just walk there and back.

Disturbia81 · 07/12/2024 13:23

But people do die in this weather, trees falling on them, trucks falling on them, blowing into rivers etc. Better to be safe
