Would you go out in this storm?

Well it's not meant to hit my area (north east coast ) till around 11am but I'm meant to be heading to Durham (1 hour train ) for a festive afternoon tea with a friend.
She lives in Durham and says it's okay for now.
According to the weather like I say it's moving over this way.
Would you risk it ?
Or not ?

it's honestly wild now
I am on the coast tho so maybe that's why it seems a bit stronger.
Just checked and all the trains into Durham are pretty much 45 mins plus delayed
So pleased I didn't go
Hope everyone stays warm and cosy

You sound like a shit friend. People find any reason to cancel now on friends and think it’s ok. Not surprised she isn’t happy.

Grow up.

Glad you made the right decision. I'm glad I cancelled my plans too. It's just not worth it.

One of the roads near me

Would you go out in this storm?

I think we've found the 'friend'

But people do die in this weather, trees falling on them, trucks falling on them, blowing into rivers etc. Better to be safe

Someone has died near me, tree fell on the car
We aren't even in a red warning

Yes, Christmas events have been cancelled, and outdoor markets etc.

God, that is awful, so sorry. More caution needs to be taken in yellow zones, as still so much damage can be done. The wind speeds are still capable of blowing fences over, debris, trains in danger etc. They're cancelling trains in yellow zones for a good reason.

LookingForAHandHold · 07/12/2024 14:05

Yeah, we went out this morning.

It's a bit of wind and maybe some rain.

Edited

It is horrible.

This is one of those situations I think ‘grading’ the severity of weather works against us. There are far too many people who see an amber as not as bad as the red so are prone to flippancy.

weather is generally pretty inert in this country but its absolutely not to be treated as inconsequential when it does get it hackles up.

poppym12 · 07/12/2024 14:31

I've cancelled my plans to go for dinner then a concert in the city tonight. We've been under a red warning but it's now dropped to amber. Gutted I've lost the money but I don't intend driving in this.

Aren't you lucky that you weren't hurt by a tree falling onto your car in a similar way to somebody near me this afternoon. Yellow zone. You must be blessed to just have a "bit of wind and rain" 🙄

I can’t imagine your friend being the type to take you being 45 minutes late well either. I bet those trains are rammed too.

Vroomfondleswaistcoat · 07/12/2024 14:34

I'm in a yellow zone. I'm in at work this afternoon. I doubt very much that they would take kindly to me ringing in and telling them it was too windy for me to come and they will have to cover my shift.

I'm just hoping it's a quiet evening/night.

Cornettoninja · 07/12/2024 14:42

I think work counts as ‘necessary travel’ in a yellow zone. Of course it would be ideal if your work was able to accommodate an alternative but even in the red zones others will have to go to work e.g. all those in emergency and essential services (utilities) will have no choice be to travel into their workplace.

OrangesCinammonIvy · 07/12/2024 14:44

Is anyone near London Richmond area and if so what's it's like now please r

Normallynumb · 07/12/2024 14:48

No I wouldn't especially on public transport.
Trains have been cancelled and buses as they're on country routes
Winds can rapidly change direction even if your friend says it's fine her end.

You must live near us. It’s mad how you can just be driving along and then you’re gone 😵.

I bet if it was a weekday there would be bosses expecting people to travel in for jobs that can be done from home. At least on a Saturday and Sunday I'd guess 95%+ of those working are jobs where you have to go to a workplace.

theprincessthepea · 07/12/2024 14:57

I’m in London so it’s barely affecting us. The only thing I’m doing today is taking DD to her activities. We had a lovely Christmas market day planned with some friends but we’ve accepted that it’s too cold and some areas are wet - I’d avoid the trains. I like the idea of a zoom or call instead.

Could you do another day?

It's wild in Durham, too and power lines are going down everywhere.

Your "friend" seems pretty thick and selfish.

fivebyfivebuffy · 07/12/2024 15:01

Yeah, we went out this morning.

In the north East it's getting worse through the afternoon, already plenty of flooded roads and trees down and events cancelled. Just because you were okay this morning isn't really relevant
