Would you go out in this storm?

Well it's not meant to hit my area (north east coast ) till around 11am but I'm meant to be heading to Durham (1 hour train ) for a festive afternoon tea with a friend.
She lives in Durham and says it's okay for now.
According to the weather like I say it's moving over this way.
Would you risk it ?
Or not ?

Some people are clueless that systems fail, that there's some things that are bigger than us such as storms. We're so used to just going about our day that people can't conceive not doing so. It's ridiculous and why people get left stranded on roadsides because the AA etc haven't got capacity to meet the brainless idiots, why emergency services are stretched, why mountain rescue have to risk life and limb for idiots who want their instagram post at the top of a mountain and so on. Just stay at home!

stripeyshutters · 07/12/2024 10:40

We're in only a yellow warning area and it is shitty - dark as hell too and rain battering off windows. No one out ! I have nothing that needs to be done outside of the home so will relax, eat, watch some more of Wolf Hall , have a nap on sofa - it's a great day for online shopping ! We might be tempted into the Christmas chocolate supplies 😂

LlynTegid · 07/12/2024 10:42

I am in north London and have been out, though walking only about 400 yards to our local market. Fewer cars passing by and none SUVs.

blinddoorshyt · 07/12/2024 10:37

I'm not looking for excuses but I can't think of anything worse than walking around in 70mph winds and rain
The train home would be a train that starts from Birmingham/London and passes through us -so if there's any disruption anywhere on the line it's going to impact my train.

The peak of the wind in Durham is 47 km/ hour or 30mph on my weather app?

JXBc · 07/12/2024 10:44

that's crazy thinking to go. Just no.

55mph - 63mph wind speed can uproot a tree. above that is serious structural damage.

you'd be mad to move. stay inside and have a cup of tea.

The thing is.....it shouldn't matter to your friend if you ARE looking for excuses because you're anxious about the weather

Who cares if you are?

Shes your friend and imo she should understand that you're concerned and need to rebook

The Met Office is saying 65mph an hour at lunchtime Confused

CoastalCalm · 07/12/2024 10:46

My mum is in Durham , travelled from North Northumberland on a organised trip and she says while it’s obviously windy etc it wasn’t too bad

Nothatgingerpirate · 07/12/2024 10:47

No.

blinddoorshyt · 07/12/2024 10:48

@ByMerryKoala not according to met office

Would you go out in this storm?

Ask her to come to you for a local activity if travelling is not an issue for her. I know you have afternoon tea booked but you might be able to reschedule - depends on the place. The thing is you just don't know with the weather. It could be fine or you could get stuck there.

I'm North of you, on the coast and it's blowing a hooley! I've just been to put some rubbish in the garage and heard wheelie bins rolling down the back lane. You've done the right thing and if your friend drops you, whilst it's sad, it's no great loss.

The most shocking thing for me is the £50 taxi ride!

forgivingfiggy · 07/12/2024 10:59

I used to have a friend like this. Would ruin your whole weekend with a noisy sulk because something wasn't right/you didn't do something/things didn't go her way. So I was either tasked with doing things against my desires or suffering her wrath for days.

blinddoorshyt · 07/12/2024 11:01

It looks awful outside -this is just now

I play in a band.

We were due to be out carolling yesterday, today and tomorrow.

Yesterday was ok.

Today the whole Christmas market we were supposed to be playing at has been cancelled.

Tomorrow is indoors apparently but I'm just waiting for it to be cancelled as pretty much every other Sunday event near me has been.

I wouldn't be going out for tea and cake, no

destiel00 · 07/12/2024 11:04

blinddoorshyt · 07/12/2024 08:25

I honestly don't want to go
I just know friend is going to be mad if I don't go and she will probably stop speaking with me.
I hate upsetting people
My partner says I should cancel and is annoyed that I would even consider it

Not much of a friend then?

Calmhappyandhealthy · 07/12/2024 11:06

Loving this idea 🤣

HangingOver · 07/12/2024 11:06

I've been out twice, do not recommend!! People hanging on to lamp posts and outdoor tables flying down the high street. Can't believe we still have power

fgsistwbotp · 07/12/2024 11:07

No, I wouldn't be going out either.
I live in the Alps and we get weather warnings for storms, avalanches, heavy snow, black ice etc. If it's a red warning you are told to cancel all non-essential travel. That's because accidents easily happen or people can get stranded without public transport and it makes it very difficult for the emergency services.
The more people who stay at home the better.
I've been in the house for two days because of storm warnings and severe black ice. There have been several accidents and severe delays on the roads.

Going to Durham for a festive tea is non-essential. I get she's disappointed but that's unfortunately the way things go sometimes. If she's a real friend she would understand and not want you to come to any harm.

blinddoorshyt · 07/12/2024 11:07

@HangingOver oh goodness that's scary
Which area are you ?
My Dad who normally goes to the pub Saturday rain ,snow or blow is even staying home too

HangingOver · 07/12/2024 11:10

North Cornwall. Going out with the dog was fine because it was an empty field but town was terrifying. The cafe window was wobbling around like it was about to cave in. I had a two sips and came straight home.

Sia8899 · 07/12/2024 11:12

I live on south coast and yes I will be going out in it. Cars going past tells me others are out too. It’s definitely windy but the last storm was worse. I normally base it on whether they are running double or single deck buses on the cliff

Donttellempike · 07/12/2024 11:18

blinddoorshyt · 07/12/2024 09:50

She's also said if I don't go she will be upset
She had planned to go for drinks after
Mentioning leaving at 10pm tonight to head home

You matter too, she doesn’t sound like a friend worth having TBH

SnoopySantaPaws · 07/12/2024 11:29

Given her attitude I wouldn't be going on a sunny blue sky day, let alone today!

what do you actually get out of this friendship? She sounds very selfish & uncaring.

my cousin, his wife & their 2 boys (and their dog) were coming up today to meet with her family for lunch & invited me. I was actually really looking forward to it. She messaged to say she was sorry, but they're in the red area, so won't be driving up. I'm disappointed, but relieved they're not risking it!! No way would I have been making them feel guilty or talking them into coming.
