What do you drink before a night out?

What alcoholic predrinks do you and your friends have before a night out? I'm looking for inspiration as it's been a while since I've been out! I'm thinking white wine or prosecco however I tend to drink them too slowly..

Shaming people for drinking alcohol sensibly and in moderation- nice! 🙄

I don't agree with the boring comment, but there are lots of people shaming OP for daring to enjoy a few drinks

@VWGal

you can still have a couple of pre-drinks whilst finishing your makeup and not end up absolutely steaming at the end of the night you know!

ExquisiteDecorations · 06/12/2024 10:24

The OP isn’t advocating problem drinking, where is the harm in having one or two before heading out if you aren’t doing it every weekend? She’s not the one doing the shaming here.

Not on mumsnet! Predrinks = raging alcohol apparently

SerenityNowSerenityNow · 06/12/2024 10:25

I don’t know anyone over 30 who has pre drinks.

I'm 42 and will often have a couple of drinks before going out. Especially if I have people staying over and we're getting ready together and we do the same when I stay at friends.

It's usually wine or Prosecco.

Starlight1979 · 06/12/2024 10:40

Why does everyone keep saying "pre-drinks"??? DP usually brings me a glass of wine or prosecco once I'm out of the shower and at my dressing table doing my hair and make-up. I just sip it as I'm getting ready. I don't consider it as "pre-drinks"😂

Also thank you to @RamsaySnowsSausage for this

Passive aggressive and judgemental, pissing on OP's chips. Fair enough if she was asking for a wine paring for the school run (malbec) or what best to chug at work (baileys), but it's a light heated post about a rare night out.

Made me properly laugh!

DH and I have a drink before we go out - usually a couple of G&T's or share a bottle of prosecco. Our friends live out in the sticks so drive to our house close to the city and park at our house overnight.
We have a couple then before the taxi comes to take us into town. Even if it is just DH and I we still have couple as we are getting ready, put some music on and get in 'going out' mood. We are mid fifties not teens and have done this for yrs. We carry on with a few more once we are out and have a good time Grin

Yeah us too! We have a night out planned next weekend and we're staying in a hotel so will get a bottle of wine or fizz for the hotel room whilst we're getting ready and take our mini speaker for some background music. We're in our 40s but don't get out very often so like to make a big deal of it when we do 😀

Because they are the drinks before you go out drinking. Like an aperitif, except instead of them coming before a meal, they come before more drinks 😂

Gosh everyone is so boring!

People that can't enjoy themselves without alcohol are boring. Have a sober night out, you'll realise how annoying drunk people are.

To be fair to OP, she has been repeatedly shamed throughout the thread, called a binge drinker, compared to students drinking alchopops etc just for asking for a drink idea for her friends to enjoy.

Nowhere has OP indicated she doesn't drink sensibly or in moderation, in fact she says she rarely goes out.

I dont understand the reaction she's got. A drink before going out , meeting up at someone's house sounds lovely. Im of an age now where I probably stick to 3 drinks and not go out often, spreading them out throughout the evening is enjoyable and actually means I'm less likely to get drunk than someone just drinking at dinner.

OP, I second a nice winter cocktail or a prosecco with one of those winter ice cubes filled with fruit etc. A nice start to a lovely evening hopefully- not sure why everyone thinks you'll be downing wkd and acting like you're 18.

MaltipooMama · 06/12/2024 10:54

So I now have one child and one on the way so haven't had a "night out" as such in a while 😂 BUT, prior to this I would always have a couple of (or a few!) glasses of wine or G&Ts whilst getting ready listening to music! In fact everyone I know pretty much does this so I'm shocked that people in the comments are so appalled. Also my group of friends aren't 18 years old tearaways we're all in our 30s in professional careers!

The only point of 'predrinks' is to help you get drunk cheaper than pub/club prices. I'm not interested in getting drunk. If I'm going out it's to socialise with people while having a few drinks. I am not boring and will happily get up and dance without being drunk. I'll enjoa few drinks/get tipsy but it's not the be all and end all of the night. I'm not a fan of hangovers so if I'm drinking, I make sure I alternate water to avoid them.

What?! No it's not at all?! If you had friends over to your house before going out would you not offer them drinks?!

That's not the only point of predrinks for some of us. I like having a drink on the go while I'm getting ready, the objective isn't to get drunk, it's just an enjoyable part of the ritual of getting ready. I'm in my 50s if it's relevant.

I'm starting to realise after all these years on MN that MN doesn't reflect the general population, or certainly not the community of people that I live in!

Absolutely spot on 👏

I'm the same! I love putting some music on, having a drink and taking my time doing my hair and make up. Feels like a real treat

Yeah I guess I just thought of it as having a nice glass of something whilst getting ready. Pre-drinks makes it sound like an event😂

@Poggishairtufts

some people are really funny and fun when tipsy.
not everyone can’t handle their alcohol

anythinginapinch · 06/12/2024 11:34

If I was going to "pre-drink" then I'd have what I was intending to go on drinking - and I wouldn't care less what other people drank. Why do you ask. OP? If you're trying to stay "on trend" then you really do need to explore yourself a bit more - who are YOU and what do you like want and need, and stop thinking you need to be like everyone else.

LindorDoubleChoc · 06/12/2024 11:40

This is something my early 20s children do because they can't afford pub/club/restaurant prices for alcohol.

I don't drink anything before a night out - which these days is always a meal out or dinner at friends houses - and limit myself to probably 3 drinks while out. And that's plenty for me! <<polishes halo of smuggery>>.

skippy67 · 06/12/2024 11:47

This adds precisely nothing to the discussion.

KenAdams · 06/12/2024 12:10

What is a DRINK? I've never heard of one?

Anyway, ignore the silly sausages.

I'd get some M&S pre made cocktails in (the small cans served over ice), bottle of white, bottle of red and some fizz. Some places are still doing 25% off 6 bottles so you could do a stock up anyway.

And for all the judgey ones, having a pre drink doesn't make you a binge drinker or make you be sick in a taxi. If I have one it takes me about 2 hours to drink because I forget it's there!

If you want to get party started with girlfriends - grate a cucumber and pour vodka over it, leave for an hour in the fridge and then strain, one shot of cucumber vodka, a dash of elderflower cordial and top up with champagne / cava / cremant. Delicious, fun and lethal enough to skip out to cabs in a great mood.

Sounds yummy, although I would make it with gin.

I don't. I'm not an 18 year-old in 2000.

Glass of fizz whilst getting ready- I love it .
If im with friends getting ready (pre drinks are the best part of the night and the excitement!) then we get champagne 🍾 I love pre drinks!

NovemberMorn · 06/12/2024 12:28

Why does everything have to turn into a mud slinging exercise on here?
I answered the OP's question, I don't drink anything before I go out....I drink wine and maybe a liqueur or two after I finish eating when I am out...but that wasn't the question.

Not that many replies (that I have read) were 'pissing on her chips' I certainly wasn't, surely not everyone has to agree with everyone else.
