@MissConductUS God help us all if Europe can't find 75k troops for a peacekeeping mission in Europe.

The EU should most definitely be involved in the process of deciding a peace settlement where that 75,000 are involved though.

I think this situation is heartbreaking for very, very many people including many in the US as well as in Ukraine, but the situation is extremely worrying.

I'll go right along with 'God help us all' mind you.

MissConductUS · 16/02/2025 17:33

The only way the mineral deal makes sense is if the US or American companies invest upfront in setting up the mining and processing capacity in exchange for a share of the profits or if they agree to pay royalties to Ukraine on anything extracted. Those types of deals are common in the petroleum industry. I agree, as stated it makes little sense for Ukraine. There is sentiment in Congress for tying it to security guarantees.

U.S. and Ukraine could still secure minerals deal that is β€˜positive’ for both sides, officials say

Democratic Senator Chris Coons told CNBC Saturday that the deal could be a β€œpositive” for both sides, provided it made security assurances for Kyiv.
β€œIf this is an investment opportunity where American companies and other companies from Europe would be involved in mining and processing, so that we can be independent of Chinese sources of these strategic minerals β€” and if his helps deepen and strengthen our partnership to help ensure the security of Ukraine going forward ... that would be a positive thing,” Coons said.

As of now, the deal is dead. Let's see where it goes from here, if anywhere.

Do we knows if these mineral reserves are for sale? Does Ukraine intend to ever explore these fully? The environmental implications are very great as a starting point. Maybe they don't want to touch them?

PerkingFaintly · 16/02/2025 18:03

The US has reportedly sent a questionnaire to European allies, asking them to provide detailed proposals on the weaponry, peacekeeping troops and security arrangements they could give Kyiv as part of any security guarantees that could be negotiated to bring an end to Russia’s full-scale invasion.

Who the fuck do they think they are? A main supplier inviting tenders from sub-contractors on whom they hope to dump the actual work, while the main supplier just creams of the money?

PerkingFaintly · 16/02/2025 18:05

Thanks but no thanks.

If that's the state of play, I feel Europe can form our own consortium to tender our services directly to the client.

No middleman necessary.

This is not unlike Putin's problem with his Schrodinger's Ukrainian Leader – where Zelensky has to be both not a legitimate leader of Ukraine AND a legitimate leader of Ukraine.

Putin has spent the last 3 years telling everyone that his invasion of Ukraine was really the US attacking Russia. If this were true, Putin could negotiate with the US for it to stop attacking Russia.

Only problem is... it's not true. It was never true.

The US was not attacking Russia – and even put severe restrictions on Ukrainian use of US military donations to be sure of this. So the US can't stop doing... what it isn't doing.

Ukraine will need external investment to make the most of them. But they have to develop them; they will need enormous amounts of money to rebuild physically, socially and to rebuild their military.

Yes, agreed about the environmental impact :s

@MagicFox we'll need a new thread soon.

Llttledrummergirl · 16/02/2025 18:20

Why the fuck would we tell America anything? It's going straight to Putin. America can't be trusted.

Europe should say thanks but no thanks and I really hope some strong messaging to that effect comes out of tomorrow.

Has Trump been Trumped? Ex Ukraine's Foreign Minister, Dmytro Kuleba thinks so.
I don't like that term "kick start". Let's hope the kick wasn't into the long grass.

@DucklingSwimmingInstructress thank you.
Also thank you for sharing your knowledge throughout these threads (I'm an inarticulate lurker who really appreciates the times you take to do this).
So it is a resource they can use themselves should they wish to, with the necessary investment through legitimate means, it's not like they were on the path of exploration before the war started.
I was shocked when this idea was first launched. It is the same view Putin holds: there are riches in that wonderful land and I want it all, I want to steal everything but make it look like it was mine all along or it was given to me by agreement.
