Oh, I just read the pilots lost their lives. They tried their best to save the passengers' lives against all odds. So utterly tragic.

Captain Igor Kshnyakin, co-pilot Aleksandr Kalyaninov and purser Hokuma Aliyeva lost their lives in the crash landing, while the other two flight attendants, Zulfugar Asadov and Aidan Rahimli, reportedly survived and were being treated in hospital on Thursday.

Natsku · 27/12/2024 08:06

Those pilots were definitely heroes, it's so sad that they died but they saved many lives and preserved the evidence of what Russia did.

DucklingSwimmingInstructress · 27/12/2024 09:40

I saw a suggestion the Russians were deliberately trying to ensure it ended up in the Caspian sea, as they denied permission to land at Russian airfields and blocked the plane's GPS.

Sounds very Russian.

There will be a heck of a lot for the investigators to unpack but I think that is reading a bit to much into what might have gone on here…

I think it was more a case from the local Russian ATC POV of making this somebody, anybody else’s problem…

As far as GPS/GNSS jamming goes it’s thought jamming was ongoing due to drone attacks on Grozny, and more importantly loosing GPS doesn’t mean aircraft can’t navigate, it simply means a loss of having a guarantee of very fine navigation accuracy. That loss of fine accuracy might, just, remotely have fed into the decision by somebody to fire a missile, but it wouldn’t stop the crew navigating accurately out of Russian airspace.

IMO what is more relevant now is that despite this incident and also the short notice brief but total closure of several major Russian airports yesterday many major non European airlines, some very popular with Brits and others, still think it’s OK to fly through Russian airspace…

Snyder describes visiting the village of Yahidne in Ukraine’s northeastern Chernihiv Oblast, where during the occupation, Russian soldiers forced nearly the entire village β€” more than 360 people β€” into the school basement at gunpoint. The locals would spend a month there, in inhumane conditions, used as human shields for the Russian soldiers’ headquarters upstairs. Eleven of them would not make it out alive.

Ukraine Invasion: Part 53
PerkingFaintly · 27/12/2024 12:03

Vladimir Putin is weaponizing illegal migration to destabilize Europe, according to The Hill. This strategy targets nations supporting Ukraine and exploits the vulnerabilities of Western societies.
Pat Fallon, a U.S. Air Force veteran and member of the House of Representatives, argues that Russia is leveraging unconventional tactics, including mass migration, to pressure Europe. The Wagner Group reportedly instigates unrest in Africa and the Middle East, provoking migration waves toward Europe.
Poland, already strained by the Ukrainian refugee crisis, faces increasing migration from the Middle East and Africa. Russia’s strategy offers three key advantages:

  1. Straining Resources: The influx forces Poland to divide resources between border security and its military.
  2. Intelligence Gathering: Russia gains insights into Poland’s crisis response, providing a blueprint for future destabilization.
  3. Intimidation and Division: Mass migration serves as a tool to intimidate Poland and sow discord among NATO allies, undermining public support for Ukraine.
Fallon warns that Russia will likely intensify this tactic if it continues to weaken the West effectively

Yes, we've seen this tactic for years. Russian/Wagner military action creating refugees, then driving them en masse towards countries they wish to destabilise.

The incidents on the Russo-Finnish border were the most obvious. People from Morocco in Russia, trying to enter Finland, doesn't happen by accident.

Following isn’t exclusive but it’s an example of airlines still seemingly quite happy to fly through Russian airspace for extended periods:

Most of the Chinese carriers.
Qatar on their Gulf<> West Coast US Routes.
Emirates , again Gulf<> US West coast.
Air India on many of their routes between the sub-continent and Europe, including UK.

Surprised at what you said about Lufthansa.

notimagain · 27/12/2024 14:02

Surprised at what you said about Lufthansa.

If I could have edited…

By any chance was it the predicted route on the moving map that was showing you were going to go via Ukraine, or did it actually show you over Ukraine.

Some of the onboard moving maps (just like some of the flight tracking sites ) aren’t great at depicting your planned route and just draw the great circle (sort of straight line) to destination, which can completely ignore any dog-legs or similar.

Pretty much the closest any EU carrier flying from Europe to the far East gets to Ukraine ATM is if they route via the south west corner of the Black Sea..actually using Ukraine airspace has, I think, been strictly verboten for EU carriers for quite some time now.

https://www.greatcirclemap.com/?routes=MUC-BKK

Great Circle Map

Great Circle Map displays the shortest route between airports and calculates the distance. It draws geodesic flight paths on top of Google maps, so you can create your own route map.

blueshoes · 27/12/2024 15:15

@notimagain thanks for listing those carriers who fly over Russian airspace. Not surprised that they belong to the Russia-friendly/neutral countries. Not that you want to take a chance with a Russian air defence missile (sorry about the lingo) being able to distinguish a friendly carrier from an unfriendly carrier at that height.

As for Lufthansa, it was one of the moving flight paths on the video at the back for the seat in front. It looks like it was based on the greatcirclemap. Thanks for the reassurance that EU carriers are avoiding Ukraine/Russian airspace. It is worth the extra cost and flight time.

notimagain · 27/12/2024 15:37

No probs, for info this is part the current and now longstanding navigation warning for the whole of Ukraine airspace…(it’s a C&P sorry it’s all capitals)

.*MILITARY INVASION OF UKRAINE BY THE RUSSIAN FEDERATION.
THE USE OF AIRSPACE OF UKRAINE WITHIN UIR KYIV, FIR LVIV,
FIR KYIV, FIR DNIPRO, FIR ODESA, FIR SIMFEROPOL' IS PROHIBITED
FOR ALL AIRCRAFT EXCEPT STATE AIRCRAFT OF UKRAINE OR UNDER
PERMISSION OF GENERAL STAFF OF THE ARMED FORCES OF UKRAINE.
ATS IS NOT PROVIDED”

Translated into plain English that means no Ukraine airspace run by any of the Ukrainian centres is available to anybody except State aircraft (so visiting VIPs, Diplomatic flights etc) or under special permission, and there is no Air Traffic Service…

The Russian airspace situation is different, the Russians will happily accept the traffic (and the cash), so wether to allow use of it or not is down to individual states/regulatory authorities.

Missed the context for that..if it’s with regard to the Aktau crash as I understand it the three crew fatalities at Aktau were the two pilots (both male) and a female (probably the lead) cabin crew member.

AFL527 from DXB to SVO got close to the Azeri-Russian border. Then doubled back to Baku, circled it then continued on and is now over Russian soil. It was nearish Grozny and is now just veering off slightly, skirting the water. Lovely old FlightRadar is listing it as diverting to Baku (evidently not). Any guesses what's been happening? Just a coinkydink to borrow from N. Flanders?

LisaJohnsonsFacebookMole · 27/12/2024 22:01

I thought it might be heading for Astrakhan. Wasn't expecting the plane to have landed yet, however, it's off radar so quite possibly it has landed at Astrakhan and more quickly than expected. It's in all likelihood meaningless but in light of the last 24 hours it piqued my interest.

LisaJohnsonsFacebookMole · 27/12/2024 22:17

Just to clarify I don't think the plane has crashed or anything so conspiratorial and all planes seem to be avoiding the Grozny area! It's the circling Baku and leaving bit that is weird but maybe they just couldn't make the landing or be given space. This is what happens when I've too much time on my hands 🫣 Just interesting to see the smaller ripples caused by Russia's invasion.

I’m having trouble getting the Flightradar playback function to make much sense or even function smoothly, that might be due to the GPS jamming in the area and also maybe a lack of local Flightradar receivers meaning coverage isn’t great, especially at low level around the airport.

That said having had a couple of looks at playback when it actually runs it looks like the aircraft might, just, perhaps, have actually landed at Baku at about 1900UTC, been on the ground for maybe an hour or more then taken off to continue enroute for Moscow but then after that has dropped off the display for reasons unknown..certainly when I run play back I get about an hour when the aircraft freezes on approach to Baku as if it has dropped off coverage, then about an hour later starts moving again as if it is climbing out.

If it really did sit on the ground for just an hour and then set off again, best bet would be a passenger offload for some reason (e.g. medical).

All speculation of course …be interesting to see if/when the flight pops up again on Flightradar.
