Europe and the US Boost Arms Production to Support Ukraine
The European Union and the United States are ramping up arms production to meet Ukraineโ€™s defense needs. EU Commissioner for Defence and Space Andrius Kubilius revealed to hromadske that EU countries plan to produce about two million artillery shells next year.
Kubilius acknowledged that only 20โ€“25% of weapons are manufactured within the EU, with the rest procured internationally. While EU funds cannot directly purchase weapons for Ukraine, alternative sources such as the European Peace Fund or frozen Russian assets may be used, despite political challenges like Hungaryโ€™s frequent blocking of such measures.
Meanwhile, the U.S. Department of Defense has signed a $253.7 million contract with Williams International to produce a range of advanced missiles. The funding comes from the 2024 security appropriations act for the Indo-Pacific region and Ukraine.
Planned missile production includes:
โ€ข Harpoon anti-ship missiles
โ€ข AGM-158 JASSM air-to-surface missiles
โ€ข AGM-158C LRASM long-range anti-ship missiles
โ€ข Tomahawk cruise missiles and other precision strike systems.
These efforts reflect a coordinated transatlantic strategy to sustain military support for Ukraine.

European gas prices have risen for the fourth consecutive day, driven by speculation about the potential halt of gas transit through Ukraine, Bloomberg reports.
The current transit agreement between Russia and Ukraine is set to expire in just a week, creating uncertainty in the market. On December 24, benchmark futures climbed 1.2%, marking an increase of over 10% in the past four sessions.
This rise also coincides with forecasts of cooler weather across Europe, which could increase gas demand as supplies are depleted more rapidly than usual. The combination of geopolitical concerns and seasonal demand is adding to market volatility as the year draws to a close.

Wishing you all a peaceful Christmas. Thank you all for the continued support and contributions on this thread ๐Ÿ™
I am noticing this year is more of a shift to celebrate Christmas today, along with the western world. Typically orthodox Christmas is on the 7th January but I think some people will celebrate both. Itโ€™s not a gift giving occasion, thereโ€™s a great focus on specific Christmas food and traditions.

As a mother with an 18 year old son, this has hit particularly hard. This is unspeakably sad for the child (who just turned a man) and his family.

Key Takeaways:

  • * *A senior Russian official reiterated Russian President Vladimir Putin's insistence that negotiations with Ukraine must be based on the same uncompromising demands he made before the full-scale invasion and at the moment of Russia's greatest territorial gains, despite the fact that Ukraine has liberated significant amount of territory since then.
  • The Kremlin's economic limitations will likely hinder its efforts to impose policies combatting long-term demographic decline in Russia.
  • A Russian cargo ship sank in the Mediterranean Sea on December 23, possibly while traveling from St. Petersburg to Vladivostok via Syria and Libya.
  • The United States provided Ukraine on December 24 with the first tranche of loans generated solely from profits from frozen Russian assets.
  • Russian forces recently advanced near Pokrovsk, Toretsk, Vuhledar, Velyka Novosilka, and in Kursk Oblast.
  • Russian Security Council Deputy Chairperson Dmitry Medvedev claimed on December 24 that 440,000 recruits signed military service contracts with the Russian Ministry of Defense (MoD) in 2024.

Azerbaijani Airlines plane en route to Russia crashes in western Kazakhstan.
A plane carrying 67 people from Baku, Azerbaijan to Grozny in Russia's Chechen Republic crashed near the Kazakh city of Aktau on Dec. 25, Tengrinews media outlet reported.
At least 28 people are believed to have survived, the Kazakh Emergency Situations Ministry said. The number of casualties has not been reported.

[current speculation]

With the caveat of โ€œIf images of wreckage doing the rounds are to be believedโ€ and if other info doing the rounds is credible it is starting to look very much like the aircraft was hit by shrapnel from the warhead of a SAM at some point in the flight and the crew then presumably managed to get the badly damaged the aircraft across the Caspian Sea before loosing control trying to land at Aktau.

Grozny has had some attention from Ukraine drones in the last few days and ATM the finger of suspicion is pointing firmly at Russian air defence involvementโ€ฆ.

All may or may not become clearer in the next day or two but I donโ€™t think anyone is now buying into the original story coming out of the region that the cause of the accident was a birdstrike.

@notimagain appreciate your input. Daily Mail called it 'bullet holes' from Russians shooting down the plane after mistaking it for a Ukrainian drone. Thought that was odd.

So it is not a catastrophic strike like MH17 (sorry Ducks) but, from the pictures if they were true, just collateral damage from air defence operating against Ukrainian drones. Would that be Russian air defence?

notimagain · 25/12/2024 22:20

@MissConductUS It would have taken some very tough birds to make holes in the fuselage

Yepโ€ฆand they would have had to be going like the clappers to attack the aircraft from behind..

@blueshoes

*Daily Mail called it 'bullet holes' from Russians shooting down the plane after mistaking it for a Ukrainian drone. Thought that was odd.

In the images Iโ€™ve seen the tail surfaces are peppered with maybe marble sized holes which is highly indicative of the sort of damage that can be caused by a blast frag warheadโ€ฆ

You do sometimes see one or two similar sized holes very very occasionally on the mid fuselage of an aircraft if an engine suffers an uncontained failure, perhaps following a birdstrike, but this doesnโ€™t look like that and is in the wrong area.

MissConductUS · 25/12/2024 22:34

@notimagain, A10 Warthog pilots have been known to complain that the aircraft is so slow that a bird strike from the rear is a serious risk. ๐Ÿ˜

Iran and Russia are planning to formalize their relations further by signing a new strategic partnership agreement just before the inauguration of U.S. President-elect Donald Trump on January 20, as reported by Newsweek. Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman Esmail Bahai stated that the agreement is expected to be finalized โ€œat the end of January.โ€
The proposed agreement, which replaces a 20-year strategic pact signed in 2001 and extended in 2020, reportedly covers areas such as energy, manufacturing, transport, and agriculture, according to Iranian media outlets like Mehr News Agency.

The Central Bank of the Russian Federation is preparing to tighten control over financial transactions involving individuals by creating a platform to share information about suspicious activities across all credit institutions. This initiative, as explained by Bogdan Shablya, head of the Financial Monitoring and Currency Control Service, aims to disrupt illegal schemes involving so-called โ€œdroppersโ€ โ€” individuals who allow their bank accounts to be used for illicit purposes, such as money laundering, drug trade, or unregulated online activities.
Currently, the Central Bank can only inform the specific bank associated with a suspicious transaction. The new system will centralize this information, making it accessible to all financial institutions, which will have the authority to block accounts or refuse services to flagged individuals. The platform will also assist law enforcement agencies by providing data about individuals listed as droppers.
The goal is to deter shadow businesses from using the banking system by increasing the risks and costs associated with such operations.
The move reflects a coordinated effort between regulators and financial institutions to enhance transparency and combat financial crimes effectively.

๐Ÿ‡ณ๐Ÿ‡ฑ๐Ÿ‡ฑ๐Ÿ‡ป Dutch and Latvian Foreign Ministers Condemn Russiaโ€™s Christmas Attack on Ukraine: Kremlin Rejects Peace

โ€œSuch a malicious choice of timing demonstrates that Putin is not interested in peace; he only seeks the destruction of Ukraine. In 2025, we will continue our efforts to stop this brutal aggression,โ€ stated Dutch Foreign Minister Veldkamp.

Latvian Foreign Minister Braลพe emphasized, โ€œThe only way to ensure a just and lasting peace in Ukraine is to continue supporting Ukraine on the battlefield, strengthening the energy system, and providing financial and political backing, while simultaneously limiting Russiaโ€™s capabilities.โ€

๐Ÿ”น Reports indicate that the AZAL Embraer passenger plane that crashed in Kazakhstan may have been struck by Russian air defense systems. Investigators have allegedly identified traces of air defense system damage on parts of the fuselage.

The plane reportedly flew through Groznyโ€™s airspace, where it was potentially mistaken for a drone during Russian attempts to intercept Ukrainian UAVs.

Subhonkul Rakhimov, one of the surviving passengers, recounted hearing an explosion:
โ€œWhile trying to land the plane in Grozny, something exploded. There was an explosionโ€”not inside the plane. Where I was sitting, the skin of the plane flew off.โ€

Azerbaijan Airlines has suspended flights to Grozny and Makhachkala pending an investigation into the crash. Speculation online suggests the plane could have been unintentionally targeted by a Russian missile.

๐Ÿ‡ช๐Ÿ‡บ The European Union has transferred a second tranche of grant aid worth 150 million euros to Ukraineโ€™s state budget.

The funds are designated for rapid reconstruction efforts aimed at addressing the countryโ€™s urgent needs.

โœˆ๏ธ The plane that crashed near Aktau was likely shot down by a Russian air defense system, but Russia will try to hide its involvement, according to the Center for Countering Disinformation.

The department stated that Russians familiar with the transcript of the Baku-Grozny flight admit the Azerbaijan Airlines plane was hit by an air defense missile. Shrapnel damage was found, and the holes in the fuselage could not have been caused by birds. Passengers even documented the damage on video.

โ€œRussia failed to close the airspace over Grozny. The plane was also denied permission to land in Grozny or Makhachkala without explanation. Thanks to the pilotsโ€™ professionalism, the Russians couldnโ€™t turn this into a provocation against Ukraine. Now, Russia will do everything to cover up its responsibility for the crash and the loss of lives,โ€ the department stated.

๐Ÿ”ธ Russia might attempt to seize part of Estonia and is already disrupting satellite navigation in Narva, a city near the border, reports Politico.

The publication also notes that Russians are stealing navigation buoys and deploying reconnaissance drones.

The focus is on eastern Estonia, home to a significant population of ethnic Russians. The alleged Russian plan is to provoke NATO into starting a global war. If NATO does not react, it would undermine the credibility of Article 5 on collective defense.

๐Ÿ”น Russia reportedly shot down an Azerbaijan Airlines plane, according to Euronews, citing Azerbaijani government sources.

The crash in Aktau was caused by a Russian surface-to-air missile, which struck the plane mid-flight, injuring passengers and crew.

The missile was fired at Flight 8432 during its automated flight over Grozny. The debris struck the plane, injuring passengers and crew members as it exploded nearby.

Despite the pilots' request for an emergency landing, the damaged plane was denied permission to land at Russian airports and was directed toward Aktau in Kazakhstan. During its flight over the sea, the plane's GPS navigation systems were jammed.

๐Ÿ”ธ Russian Foreign Minister Lavrov stated that Russia โ€œdoes not need empty talkโ€ about resolving the โ€œUkrainian crisisโ€ and again accused the West and Kyiv of โ€œviolatingโ€ the Minsk agreements.

Lavrov expressed hope that the Trump administration would โ€œexplore the root causes of the crisis in Ukraine.โ€ He repeated claims that Russia is ready for consultations. However, the Kremlinโ€™s stance remains unchangedโ€”rejecting constructive dialogue and clinging to Putinโ€™s ultimatums.

Lavrov also alleged that France had โ€œrepeatedly offered Russia, through closed channels, to discuss Ukraine without Kyivโ€™s participation.โ€

๐Ÿ”น In the Toretsk direction, an Egyptian citizen fighting for Russia surrendered to Ukrainian forces.

According to Ukrainian defenders, they repelled a Russian assault, eliminating nearly all the attackers. The sole survivor chose to surrender. He turned out to be an Egyptian citizen recruited by Russia. Ukrainian soldiers had to use sign language to communicate with him.

๐Ÿ”ธ The US Helsinki Commission has been declared โ€œundesirableโ€ in Russia, reports Voice of America.

The Russian Prosecutor Generalโ€™s Office added the commission to its list of โ€œundesirableโ€ organizations, effectively banning its activities in the country. Russians cooperating with it may face criminal prosecution.

According to the Prosecutor Generalโ€™s Office, the commissionโ€™s work allegedly โ€œdestabilizes Russiaโ€™s socio-political situationโ€ and spreads materials that โ€œdiscreditโ€ the countryโ€™s leadership, law enforcement, and judicial system.

Founded in 1976, the US Helsinki Commission monitors the implementation of the 1975 Helsinki Accords on cooperation, territorial integrity, and sovereignty, signed by 35 countries, including the USSR.

Russiaโ€™s law on undesirable organizations, in force since 2015, bans listed entities and penalizes participation in their activities. Repeat violations can lead to up to four years in prison, though the lawโ€™s definitions of โ€œparticipationโ€ remain vague.

๐Ÿ”น Israeli airline El Al has canceled flights to Russia following the plane crash near Aktau.

โ€œDue to events in Russian airspace, El Al is suspending all flights on the Tel Aviv-Moscow route for the next week. The situation will be reassessed next week, and a decision on resuming flights will be made. Passengers will be notified shortly,โ€ the airlineโ€™s press service announced.

๐Ÿ”ธ The Netherlands plans to provide Ukraine with an additional โ‚ฌ6 billion, on top of the โ‚ฌ3.8 billion already transferred, focusing on energy support, according to the Dutch Ambassador to Ukraine, Alle Dorhout.

Over the past three years, the Netherlands has supported Ukraine morally, with humanitarian aid, reconstruction efforts, and economic and military assistance.

โ€œIn total, the Netherlands has allocated over โ‚ฌ10 billion in military aid, with nearly โ‚ฌ4 billion already delivered.

We have done a lot to support your country and are always looking for new ways to help. Colleagues remain in constant contact with the Ukrainian side to identify how we can further assist Ukraine through this winter,โ€ the ambassador stated.

๐Ÿ”นVladimir Putin is weaponizing illegal migration to destabilize Europe, according to The Hill. This strategy targets nations supporting Ukraine and exploits the vulnerabilities of Western societies.

Pat Fallon, a U.S. Air Force veteran and member of the House of Representatives, argues that Russia is leveraging unconventional tactics, including mass migration, to pressure Europe. The Wagner Group reportedly instigates unrest in Africa and the Middle East, provoking migration waves toward Europe.

Poland, already strained by the Ukrainian refugee crisis, faces increasing migration from the Middle East and Africa. Russiaโ€™s strategy offers three key advantages:

  1. Straining Resources: The influx forces Poland to divide resources between border security and its military.
  2. Intelligence Gathering: Russia gains insights into Polandโ€™s crisis response, providing a blueprint for future destabilization.
  3. Intimidation and Division: Mass migration serves as a tool to intimidate Poland and sow discord among NATO allies, undermining public support for Ukraine.

Fallon warns that Russia will likely intensify this tactic if it continues to weaken the West effectively
