Thank you @SalsaLights for explaining the global nature of the internet and Mumsnet demographics. I've been here since 2007 so I'm good thanks.

What is still amusing me is @mathanxiety puzzling defensiveness against the obvious and very well known fact that American people of a certain milieu are fascinated and by European culture, class and society over here. GP is one of them.

There is a reason why US-UK migration has just accelerated and the Cotswolds is going to turn into a New England outpost, worse than it has already become with Daylesford and Soho House a parody of what British country life is like. Completely lost on the newest blow ins I'm sure.

As is the "bal". An archaic throw back to times when women had little to no agency or control over their lives, their marriages or their money. And these events were a way of selling your daughter to the right kind of family and wealth and making sure she didn't run off with the milkman.

There is no way on gods green earth Chris Martin would shove his daughter in a frock that didn't fit her properly and parade her in Paris. It's a bestowed honour to be invited and as with all these things a highly manipulated guest list of wealth/A list/ aristocracy to supposedly reflect the times we live in.

Except it doesn't really does it? Unless you consider Hello! a good read and reflection of how we live now.

Snippy, xenophobic, and snobby in equal measure, I see. You're entitled to your opinions of course, but your salient "well known fact" may well be a fact that exists in the popular imagination only. Or possibly only in your imagination. It's very much a spawn of the theory behind the "Special Relationship" - that the British are the sage Greeks and the Americans are the brash, rash, and only moderately educated Romans who need careful guidance.

And you're also coming across as weirdly loyal to Chris Martin, who appeared to be having the time of his life at the Bal, and either came up with the idea of naming his daughter Apple or went along with it eighteen odd years ago.

Let me guess, you don't like Gwyneth Paltrow? If she was so fascinated by European culture, class, and society, she could have done much, much better than Chris Martin.

I'm not sure when you last visited, but imo the Cotswolds have been a parody of British country life for a long, long time, and not because of American blow-ins.

The Bal's invitee list is not supposed to reflect the times we live in. It's designed to make wealthy people from all over the world part with their money. None of the society dish of any trashy /fashion mag is supposed to reflect "the times we live in". Its content is supposed to be an escape from the times we live in, and its aim is to flog pricey sunglasses or youth in a jar, or whatever, not to advertise nail fungus cream or bogo deals in the local supermarket. Did you think it was supposed to reference your life or mine?

As for 'highly manipulated guest lists', check out how you get invited to the Queen Charlotte Ball. It looks like a cut price version of the Paris hooley.

What do people think about this. I can’t believe it’s still a thing in our modern society. Being presented to society in a debutante ball. How very antiquated.
https://www.dailymail.co.uk/tvshowbiz/article-14148249/Apple-Martin-Debutante-Ball-Chris-Gwyneth-Paltrow-Paris.html

It's all bollocks isn't it. Let them get on with it. It's much better to be with them that don't care less. A pint and a packet of scratchings, please.

SpiritOfEcstasy · 03/12/2024 20:48

Can you imagine how much she and her family were paid to attend this??? Probably enough for her to buy her first house. Even the granny was there!

Horses7 · 03/12/2024 21:29

Beggars belief!

I know these things still go on, but I was shocked to see Chris Martin and Gywneth Paltrow there, two celebs who advocate equality, promoting everyone and avoiding elitism.

totally their call of course, but just doesn’t sit right with me.

I don’t understand why her parents and brother and grandmother were there at all! It’s not a
debutante ball. It’s something else… not sure what really but all very tasteless clearly.

livanlaterlaterlater · 03/12/2024 22:54

Fair to say that I am now at peace that I couldn't get Coldplay tickets...always thought that Chris Martin was a regular guy with a conscience 🤷‍♂️

Crikey are you Apples Mum 😳

Lallydallydune · 03/12/2024 23:01

I still think that apple is such an awful name.

this. I'd say that the bal 🙃harmed his brand. it's not cool or trendy showcasing their wealth in this way during COL crisis, especially with apple being a brat. thumbs down to that. glad I did't waste any hard earned cash on lining their pockets.

CyanMaker · 04/12/2024 00:31

Except she inherited Daddy's nose.

BeccaS34 · 04/12/2024 04:44

I think Apple’s very pretty and I wish her well. For me the dress was underwhelming something about the bustline/neckline is weird and the tiered ruffles were too much, too 80s.

The people saying Chris Martin is a hypocrite: one he’s not giving it all away he doesn’t have THAT much of a problem with inequality. Two can you imagine Gwyneth and Apple trying to wear him down? How grating that would be? Three, Apple’s date is some aristo whose dad is a director/producer so there’s a chance her parents’ careers are part of the reason SHE was willing to do this in the first place.

Who knows why he went for it. Who knows why anyone would find such an event interesting or fun.

Lobelia123 · 04/12/2024 08:09

wow some spiteful and judgy comments on here. I think if its something she wanted to do and something the whole family were proud of, took part in in some way and supported, and could afford, why not.

Because it’s tacky, vulgar and generally in poor taste considering the vast amounts of inequality, poverty and CoL crisis. Tone deaf.

@mathanxiety has been on here for years. We have crossed paths on many threads. I believe math is Irish but has lived & raised her kids in the USA for many years...

@noise25 I agree that Americans love British & European lifestyles..Remember when Madonna married Guy Ritchie & moved to the Codswolds🤣 Complete with her tweed, hunter wellies & flat caps!

That rule is only there for the plebs. People like Chris & Gywneth are in all levels of society. One rule for thee , one for me..
Like the lefty socialists who before they have kids state they will never put them in private school, state all the way. When socialist sprog is born their name is on private school lists before they are a day old!
All these types are hypocrites!

She's the image of her mother

And her father!

TheWiseFish · 04/12/2024 10:00

I think Apple is beautiful in that East Coast waspy way. Similar to Carolyn Bissett Kennedy who Gywenths style reminds me of.

eggandonion · 04/12/2024 10:46

@TheWiseFish that's exactly it...I knew she reminded me of someone.😊

LilacLilyBird · 04/12/2024 11:00

The ball invites the girls so they're not exactly going to want to turn it down at a young age because it's exciting isn't it

My DD wouldn't turn it down not that she'd ever be invited

LilacLilyBird · 04/12/2024 11:06

They're rolling in it so a few young girls going to a ball isn't going right the world of equality and poverty that's just ridiculous

I have a feeling Apple might fit in well with Trump's team.

mathanxiety · 03/12/2024 19:08

Nah, it's a genius idea - you flatter people's sense of their own importance and validate their notion that they have superior genes by making a heavily publicized charity event 'invitation only' and make the criteria for an invitation known. The young women must be wealthy, intelligent, wealthy, good-looking, wealthy...did I mention wealthy?

So a lot of people want in on this and are prepared to cut a hefty cheque to support whatever charity the Bal is in aid of.

My post isn't an opinion, it's fact. I know plenty of people involved in Le Bal in one way or another.

IcedPurple · 04/12/2024 12:24

Funkyslippers · 04/12/2024 09:57

And her father!

She is Chris Martin in a Valentino ball gown.

I don't see Goop in her at all.

eggandonion · 04/12/2024 12:43

I think she would look good with the Trumps. The Kennedy clan especially the women, have often had awful lives and deaths despite the money.
Maybe Apple and her family could set up a new dynasty!
