It also highlights ‘banter’ for what it frequently is: a cover for people to be sexist, racist and otherwise discriminatory and/or bullying, unkind, rude, mocking and insensitive.

Anyone who challenges or objects is told they can’t take a joke.

Yet, it devastates some people or for others chips away at them, causing cumulative harm.

It’s never a joke to make people feel uncomfortable and be unkind or insensitive. You don’t know what a person’s backstory is or what they might be going through right now. They shouldn’t have to tell you just so you’ll be sensitive, e.g. “Thanks for that Gregg, the man who raped me didn’t wear underpants either”.

Genuinely funny people (‘comedians’ or not) don’t need to be insensitive or inappropriate to make people laugh.

As in Greggorian Cant?

Oh, that's very good.

As a woman in her 30s who was raised in bootle, Liverpool, I can assure gregg I’m not middle class in the slightest.
I also find him a misogynistic, deplorable, wee gobshite.

Me too! I'm almost 70 and grew up on the roughest council estate in Croydon, and I still think his behaviour was disgusting.

Behaviour like that would have been a disciplinary matter in every organisation I've worked for in the last 40 years, at least.

Bet his wife is on MN and is telling him of the love he’s getting here from all us MC women of a certain age.

I'm "working-class-done-good", mid 30s and I still think he's an odious twerp. So his wife can tell him the hatred knows no age limits or class boundaries.

I love that he's digging himself in deeper.

He came to my workplace to film. He was loathed by everyone, and I do mean everyone who encountered him. I actually don't think he said anything sexually inappropriate (that I heard about anyway) but he was just downright rude and sexist.

He did a piece to camera with a woman worker, where part of the task was quite physical. When she showed what they did, he did that 'cor blimey luv, how old are ya??' crap. Without missing a beat, she replied 'I'm two years older than you Greg, same age as your mother in law I think'.

It didn't make the cut 😁

He also swanned around telling people not to be intimidated by him as 'I'm just the same as you- only difference between us is 7million' and shit like that. The whole factory thought he was an absolute prat, and to be fair, the TV crew seemed to think the same.

That will have stung 😆

Seven million isn't the only difference between him and most people in that workplace, the overwhelming majority of them won't have been bankrupt leaving creditors hundreds of thousands out of pocket, let alone doing that more than once.

JulianAssangesCat · 01/12/2024 12:41

Thanks - just seen the video on his Instagram stories. It’s every bit as bad as has been reported! How stupid is he?! 🫣

Same. I’m similar age to GW and working class. His alleged and published behaviour hasn’t been OK for decades, if ever, especially not at work.

@expandabandband if Google is to be believed HFW has a thing for hair of any colour Shock (allegedly)

okright · 01/12/2024 11:02

The BBC are atrocious at managing these situations. They need someone adept at managing allegations from a regulated profession leading and working with PR.

Women of a certain age have grown in time, status and voice to articulate that we do not like overt and misplaced sexualised comments in the wrong place i.e work. Old guys- don’t be talking about/ touching/ or the use of your sexual organs or other peoples sexual organs. That’s it. Not too difficult is it?

As young women they did not like it either but didn’t know how to articulate it without compromising themselves. If Kirsty Wark can’t say stfu then who can. I hope she did say it to him direct too.

This. The world has moved on. The BBC need to learn they cannot brush this kind of behaviour under the carpet any longer. It's as if they've learnt nothing from previous scandals.

JessyCarr · 01/12/2024 12:47

Blankety blank:

The only difference between us is seven million…

…quid I still owe my creditors?
…sleazy comments I’ve made?
…people think I’m a misogynistic arsehole?

OnlyinBlackandWhite · 01/12/2024 12:50

I can't believe these celebs don't have either an agent or a BBC bod who takes control of these situations for situation management, and then the first thing they shout at them is 'don't say anything!' Or perhaps he did have one, as his first statement was 'I'm co-operating with the investigation' and now he's gone rogue. That's probably the problem in the first place.

Deathraystare · 01/12/2024 12:54

Imagine if he and his wife are ever out in public "I am so sorry about that" (embarrassed wife).

WTF did she ever see in him?????

Forrressstloverr · 01/12/2024 12:55

Stupid vile man! He’s digging his own future with a massive JCB. 😂

MiscellaneousSupportHuman · 01/12/2024 12:21

He’s likely to be sunk by this too. Because how could he not have noticed? And having noticed, why did he enable it by silence?

And he’s not the direct perpetrator, maybe his career will survive. But he’s not a presenter I’d be able interested in watching now

Agree. He may have challenged GW and/or complained, many times for all we know.

But, what’s unfathomable is why he carried on working with him for so long if the behaviour carried on. It appears complicit.

Love Emma Kennedy's comment:

Responding to Wallace’s video, actress Emma Kennedy who won Celebrity MasterChef in 2012 and says she complained about his behaviour at the time, said "it doesn’t matter what the age of any woman is".
"If you behave inappropriately, you behave inappropriately," she told BBC News. "It’s a story as old as the tides that people who have been accused of inappropriate behaviour turn the tables on those pointing it out and try and change the narrative."
She added: "Playing the 'they’re having a go at me because I’m working class' card is ridiculous."

sharpclawedkitten · 01/12/2024 13:02

I am going to say what I said on the other thread - the likes of Kirsty Wark are quite capable of telling him to shut up and not make stupid sexualised comments. Hopefully in future they will, and hopefully production companies will grow a pair too and tell their "talent" when they are being berks.

ArabellaScott · 01/12/2024 13:03

Ggoodness Ggracious me, what a Gghastly, arroggant misoggynist.

TooBigForMyBoots · 01/12/2024 13:04

FennelFan · 01/12/2024 11:42

They're currently in negotiations with GB News.

Wouldn't surprise me. Last night's Saturday Five show had all the usual "it's only banter" and "his life is ruined" bollocks. But then Darren Grimes is partial to a bit of sexual harassment in the workplace himself.Hmm

Yes GgregG will fit right in on GB News.

WotWithTheseFeet · 01/12/2024 12:37

The nature of the industry means many in it are self employed and have always to be concerned about where their next job is coming from. In this fairly 'closed' community the wrong word at the wrong time could equal no future work. There are exceptions of course, like the more high profile television/radio personalities who've made complaints and could have done earlier; indeed they may well have done as it seems there have been previous inquiries into his conduct. However, this morning's comments just demonstrate the man is boorish with no sense of self awareness as he could have made the same points in a more diplomatic fashion. After all, irrespective of the merits of a particular case it's not uncommon for many to jump on the woke bandstand given the first opportunity.

But this wasn't the case for Masterchef - Gregg couldn't have destroyed any careers. The celebs already have a career, the amateurs are in a competition, the professionals are professionals and professional chefs thinking about giving them a job aren't going to pay attention to Gregg - in fact they probably know only too well what he is like.

So there was no excuse for women not to complain and if they did complain, no excuse for something to be done about it.

As for middle class women of a certain age - well, that's because we have zero f's to give and have, in many cases, got over the people pleasing stage (though I don't think I ever had one).

FaceLikeACrackedScreen · 01/12/2024 13:09

It’s very much the case behind the scenes with freelancers having to put up with inappropriate behaviour from ‘celebrities’.

Livelovebehappy · 01/12/2024 13:10

I think it’s a case of reading the room. Of course there are women who will join in with this sort of banter, and respond in like with sexual innuendos. I’ve worked with women who do make sexual references. Not my kind of people, but they exist. But in Wallace’s case, it seems he’s not good at reading his audience, and now must face the consequences.

LaurenAction · 01/12/2024 13:10

It used to irk me every. fucking. time Steve Wright pointed out the no g for serious jockin. I'm now rethinking my stance.

re Wallace.
