DH and DS think I "don't cook"

In two separate conversions over the last few days, DS and then DH independently claimed that I "don't cook."

I don't exactly recall the conversation with DS. But DH and I were discussing whether to replace or repair our broken oven, and he claimed we don't need a new oven "because it's not like you cook, anyway."

I do cook. For them. Every day.

When I pointed this out, he hemmed and hawed a bit and then said, "Well, you don't need a fancy new oven, because you don't bake things like nice cakes or a souffle."

No, I don't have time for that. But I do cook supper for them every day and lunches on the weekend.

Just a moan, really.

I would 100% stop cooking.
Then again I've barely cooked in 20 years because DH complained my food was too boring and repetitive. So I told him he could do it from then on. Turns out he enjoyed it so it stuck.

My oven isn't for souffles it is for baked potatoes, waffles, oven chips and those packets of spring rolls you get in the frozen section, and the occassional roast made by DH.

TBF - that's exactly what my air dryer is for (except the DH bit!)

If you're even willing to serve a meal after that, make it a cheese or egg salad for a few days as you can't put x in oven.

Sunnyside4 · 27/11/2024 10:25

Oh, and DH can work out what's for Xmas meal if you're at home. I'd be wanting my meat, fish or nut roast/similar done in oven.

Runskiyoga · 27/11/2024 10:25

Oh definitely take this new information on with surprise and pleasure, cook for others no more.

Singleandproud · 27/11/2024 10:26

Did they mean you don't use the oven. I very rarely use my oven as most things I cook are on the hob, slow cooker, soup maker or rice cooker which are all separate. The only time my oven is really used is for baking cakes which DD does.

Is that what they meant but phrased clumsily?

Either way I'd stop cooking for them because who wouldn't want a break.

vodkaredbullgirl · 27/11/2024 10:27

Just stop cooking for them.

bigkidatheart · 27/11/2024 10:28

Show them you not cooking and let them fend for themselves for a few weeks then ask them again

Bumcake · 27/11/2024 10:31

Who makes soufflé in the regular? Nobody would have an oven if that was a requirement of owning one.

Take a week off and see how they fare, cheeky sods.

Parker231 · 27/11/2024 10:32

Why is it your responsibility to do the cooking? How many days a week do your DH and DS cook?

favouriteyellowsocks · 27/11/2024 10:32

So rude. Don't let them take you for granted. Just stop cooking for them

Nothatgingerpirate · 27/11/2024 10:36

How ridiculous.
My oven is here to heat up fancy ready meals, the occasional roast and cheese on toast and very seldom a strudel.
My "boomer" generation husband (75) repeats how happy and grateful he is.
(Obviously I do other stuff, but hate fumbling with food all my life). 😊

dreamingofsun · 27/11/2024 10:37

my husband moaned about dinners once too often. he now cooks at least once a week and can choose what he cooks. he also moaned that i didnt rinse things before putting in dishwasher so he does that too.

kick back.

I would honestly just stop cooking. And when they complain remind them that you don’t cook, remember? They’ll soon get the message. Maybe they’ll start cooking! Result!

This ☝🏽 💯

You don't cook

Do cook for yourself, of course

Yeahno · 27/11/2024 10:39

The natural thing to do here is to stop cooking. After all, you don't cook.

Anywherebuthere · 27/11/2024 10:39

Stop cooking! They will realise soon enough.

GeorgeMichaelsCat · 27/11/2024 10:40

I'd stop cooking to make a point. They'll soon shell out for a new oven then.

JustAFear · 27/11/2024 10:40

Don’t just moan here OP. Stop cooking. Tell them this. Don’t prepare any other food for them either.

DH had the gall to complain about food a while ago, we needed to eat healthier, the kids shouldn’t have snacks, we spend too much money. I told him that the next week, Saturday-Saturday, he was 100% in charge of the food for the household. Took him four days to realise it’s not as simple as he thought. Now we share it properly.

AutumnFroglets · 27/11/2024 10:41

I'm going to echo every other poster. Stop cooking for them. They can either go without or learn to cook. If they do the latter then you can take it in turns going forward. At the minimum that would mean 3 nights of not having to cook at all. Win win.

yukikata · 27/11/2024 10:42

Well as we all know, working ovens are only necessary if you're baking a cake or souffle!

If you're just making daily meals, it's OK if the oven doesn't work properly🙄

ClicketyClickPlusOne · 27/11/2024 10:43

Stop cooking.

Right now.

So that they understand what ‘you don’t cook’ means.

What is the point of just moaning? Nothing will change. He will resent the new oven and still think you don’t cook for the next 20 years.

No big deal, just don’t. When asked, say calmly ‘you said I don’t cook. So I didn’t. ‘

redskydarknight · 27/11/2024 10:43

Possibly I've misunderstood, but it sounds like DH is saying you don't cook with the oven - not that you don't use the hob/slow cooker/air fryer/microwave.

If you don't currently use the oven it's valid to say that you don't need a new one ...

Oh come on. I think there's a pretty strong suggestion here that OP is in fact using the oven for daily cooking.

OliviaRodrighost · 27/11/2024 10:44

He didn’t say “you don’t use the oven”. He said “you don't bake things like nice cakes or a soufflé”.
