Fairytale Of New York. Men in pubs, who up to that point had shown no interest in singing along, all suddenly shout "faggot!" along with the song at the tops of their voices.

Most of them.

Same!

The pah ruppapum pum one. I walk out of shops if it comes on, it actually makes me nauseous.

Baby It's Cold Outside, as I don't find rape culture particularly festive

Past Three O'Clock because it's so anal retentive and forelock-tugging, and reminds me of my stepfather.

I wonder if the version of the rah pah pum pum one (Little Drummer Boy) you heard was the Ray Cuniff Singers version. I used to find it creepy as a child in the 80s (parents had a record of it). It wasn't until I was older and studied the Moors Murders at University on !y criminal law module and discovered it was playing in the background when little Lesley Ann Downey was tortured and murdered.

Wonderful Christmas Time by Wings - I can’t fully express how much I loathe this song.

Mistletoe and Wine - a close second

the80sweregreat · 24/11/2024 18:51

I also loath ' wonderful Christmas time' by Paul McCartney and wings.
It is complete dirge and goes on mute if it comes on. Unfortunately it always seems to be on in the supermarket when I'm in there ..

scalt · 24/11/2024 18:51

I loathe with a passion Santa Claus is coming to town. "You'd better watch out, you'd better not cry..."

Most definitely Last Christmas. You know it's going to be that one before the words even start.

I wish it could be Christmas every day.

Here it is merry Christmas, especially with that screeched line "IT'S CHRISTMASSSSSS!"

Sad songs, such as Christmas shoes, the little boy that Santa Claus forgot. And there's a really terrible one: the Cat Carol, it is the saddest Christmas song ever, especially if you love cats. (Listen to it at your peril - it makes grown men cry.) Another reason I loathe Last Christmas.

Any over-slow ones, like "chestnuts roasting on an open fire". Prolongs the agony.

Ones which aren't really about Christmas, such as Sleigh Ride. I suppose Jingle Bells is one such as well.

Most pop versions of traditional carols. I love proper choral carols (except away in a manger, as it's so overdone), but the ones with a solo pop star voice, especially if they mess about with the rhythm - just no.

I despise Mistletoe and Wine for a different reason. I was once involved in a church pantomime, which had music between the scenes; once scene had a particularly complicated set up, which had to be rehearsed again and again, so we heard that song again and again.

I'm not sure everyone regards it a Christmas song, but I loathe The Power of Love with every fibre of my being.

I've never known it to be a ,Christmas song, but I love the Gabrielle Aplin version.

the80sweregreat · 24/11/2024 18:54

The power of love by Frankie is another pile of dirge and misery.
I do like ' stay another day' but it has a sad back story to it

Fairytale of New York. Absolute shite and not at all Christmassy

Yep, this.

RancidOldHag · 24/11/2024 19:02

I don't hate it as such, but I never, ever want to hear Little Drummer Boy.

Because that was playing in the background of the tape when Brady tortured and murdered Lesley-Anne Downey. The actual tapes of course have never been broadcast (though they were played at the trial, so their existence and a broad description is known) and also have never leaked. The mere thought is enough to chill me, even all these decades on.

Staywithmemyblood · 24/11/2024 19:10

Wonderful Christmas Time makes me want to punch someone (Paul McCartney!?)
Stop the Cavalry - please just stop playing it!
And the less said about Cliff Richard and his Mistletoe and Wine the better!

Unlike many others here though I love love love Wham’s Last Christmas, the Mariah Carey one and the Leon’s Lewis one - like that even more now that people have pointed out she sounds like she’s had a few snowballs - good for her! Merry Christmas Everyone!

And Fairy Tale of New York. Especially when sung by children. Has anyone actually read the words????

I like this video of it.

theres a 10 second argument with the well known bit

you're a bum, you're a punk
youre an old slut on junk
etc.

but that's nothing compared to most stuff on the radio. But the video & the rest of the song are good.

I don't understand why it get so much hate. It's just not all Santa, love etc

bit

WhereAreMyGuineaPigsHidingToday · 24/11/2024 19:15

Leona Lewis- One More Sleep. Hate it . Can't say why. I just hate it .

All of Kelly Clarksons Christmas songs.

I love love love Do You Hear What I Hear by Whitney Houston though and The Darkness song about Christmas bells. I also enjoy David Bowie and Bing Crosby version of Little Drummer Boy/Peace on Earth. Doesn't have the same creepy vibes as the Ray Cuniff (Moors Murders) version. I appreciate that wasn't Ray Cuniff and his singers fault!

Andy Williams: "Happy Holidays".
"He'll be coming down the chimney down" so "Hoopty-Doo"
Hoopty -Doo?
Yeah that just about sums up the song and it's lyrics.

Well done!

you get my first 'yeah not too keen on that one! I'd fast forward that one. But I still wouldn't say I HATE it.

mondaytosunday · 24/11/2024 19:21

The Slade song. Plus sick to death of Fairytale in NY one. And OMG the McCartney Wonderful Christmastime is awful.

Reading the transcript of the tape contents was horrible enough. I couldn't bear to have heard the actual tape. Apparently the police detective on the case when he heard it broke down and cried. That poor, poor little girl. I can't understand how Lord Longford advocated for Hindley's release. That woman wasn't even human. Even her dad, who was himself an abusive man stated that he (and his wife) had "created a monster."

Valkyrie3 · 24/11/2024 19:30

I particularly dislike the way GM pronounces 'gave' in Last Christmas.
"Last Christmas I gev you my heart".
Gev? Just pronounce it correctly!

PeggyMitchellsCameo · 24/11/2024 19:31

Cliff Richard. In fact anything by him at any time. Mistletoe and Wine. Saviour’s Day.
Absolute shite.

TheHangingGardensOfBasildon · 24/11/2024 11:43

For me, standing head and shoulders above them all is that ghastly Christmas Sweater song - written by Irving Berlin but popularised of late by Mickey Bubbles.

Aside from the horrible saccharine tackiness of the thing in general, it's made to sound all sweet , loving and encouraging, but if you actually listen to the lyrics, they're really bullying and coercive.

I know it's just about a jumper in this case, but it's the kind of thing that's textbook symptomatic of much more serious abusive and controlling behaviour going on behind the scenes.

Have you watched the bublé video? I love the little jumper!!

Driving Home for Christmas, no reason but I will always switch stations if it comes on!

I love this one. Now we have Spotify we can actually play it when we are driving home for Christmas. Previously it was seen as a good omen if it came on when we were driving home for Christmas.

Personally I hate Merry Christmas Everyone by Shaking Stevens.

SweetSakura · 24/11/2024 19:34

Do they know it's Christmas. The lyrics are just so problematic

Actually, I knew a police officer who had heard those tapes. He said he wished he had never heard them. Lord Longford was just gullible.

It's still a bit open to debate, though.

Is Joni Mitchell's The River a Christmas song, even when it only gets a dismissive cursory mention at the beginning?

And Time Passages by Al Stewart includes the lyrics "It was late in December" - so defo a Christmas song, then?!

No it's really not open to debate, have you actually listened to ALL the words or just the 10 second slanging each other off??

I hate any Frankie Goes to Hollywood song. Especially The Power of Love and Relax.

Had no idea about the back story for Stay Another Day. I must go off to google.

@Elderflower14

im so sorry, that's heart breaking ❤️‍🩹

the actual story behind the song is sad too, so it's always made me feel sad, but hearing your story ... I'll think of you when I hear it 🤗😘.

I bet you wonder where the years have gone, 30 years 😥. Xx
