Too many to list but the most hideous
Simply having a wonderful Christmastime - McCartney
All I want for Christmas is you-Mariah
Its Christmas - Slade

These things make me murderous.

Rummly · 24/11/2024 11:19

I used to dislike many of them. But I’ve mellowed over the (many) years. The only ones I can’t abide now are Do They Know it’s Christmas? and Mistletoe and Wine.

I even quite like When a Child is Born these days!

(Fairytale of New York is a great song in its own right. Kirsty MacColl was fabulous.)

SerafinasGoose · 24/11/2024 11:19

Great, cathartic thread! I agree most are just awful. Especially those at the 'high point' of the 70s and 80s. It's Mariah Carey I loathe most.

Some of the older ones like Nat King Cole (that voice!) and Andy Williams I like in the way you do your old jeans or favourite slippers. The exception is 'Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas', which is so maudlin it makes me want to puke! Pity, because otherwise 'Meet Me in St Louis' is a favourite Christmas film.

Fairytale of New York. Absolute shite and not at all Christmassy

It's a fabulous song, not Christmassy, but a work of genius. Most Christmas songs are sickly sweet horrors.

TheDogBartholomew · 24/11/2024 10:43

It's the only Christmas anthem I can tolerate, because it's not sickly sweet and sentimental.

I suspect there are plenty of couples it’s relevant to…

ExpertlyDecorated · 24/11/2024 11:24

Fairytale of New York is my worst by far, I detest it.

TheTecknician · 24/11/2024 11:24

I dislike some Christmas songs more than others. I would happily never hear again the Mariah Carey thing. But I can honestly say I think I would miss the less contemptible ones from Wizzard and even Chris De Burgh. Think about how strange a Christmas would be without them. There should, however, be a law rationing broadcast of them to prevent weariness and stabbiness!

As for Christmas Carols, I'll always enjoy Once In Royal David's City and O, Come All Ye Faithful.

Driving Home for Christmas, no reason but I will always switch stations if it comes on!

Me too. Randomly, I find it really depressing.

Love all the others mentioned though 😂

I actually can't think of any I like. Not even Fairytale of New York and I say that as a massive Pogues fan.

The worst has to be Wham but that's mainly because my mates and I all play Whamageddon (ie competition to see who can last December without hearing it) so if I do hear it I lose.

I'd (thankfully) forgotten Santa Baby and the Cliff Richard one so thanks PP for that reminder 😅

TheHangingGardensOfBasildon · 24/11/2024 11:35

I quite like Feliz Navidad when it's just Jose on his own - although it's a bit short on the lyrics - but that version with his kid always makes me cringe.

It's a beautiful video for his family to keep and treasure forever, but not for general release, please! At least wait until the child is older and has a much less irritating voice!

Tequilamockinbird · 24/11/2024 11:36

Little Drummer Boy because of the Moors murderers connection.

I have to turn the radio off when it comes on Sad

CurlewKate · 24/11/2024 11:41

Mind you-for 15 years I had a choir child of some kind in my house. Very few Christmas songs can survive that!

MolkosTeenageAngst · 24/11/2024 11:41

Same as you, all I want for Xmas

TheHangingGardensOfBasildon · 24/11/2024 11:43

For me, standing head and shoulders above them all is that ghastly Christmas Sweater song - written by Irving Berlin but popularised of late by Mickey Bubbles.

Aside from the horrible saccharine tackiness of the thing in general, it's made to sound all sweet , loving and encouraging, but if you actually listen to the lyrics, they're really bullying and coercive.

I know it's just about a jumper in this case, but it's the kind of thing that's textbook symptomatic of much more serious abusive and controlling behaviour going on behind the scenes.

Erm Christmas Eve is mentioned in the very first line!

It's still a bit open to debate, though.

Is Joni Mitchell's The River a Christmas song, even when it only gets a dismissive cursory mention at the beginning?

And Time Passages by Al Stewart includes the lyrics "It was late in December" - so defo a Christmas song, then?!

rewilded · 24/11/2024 11:49

I like them all!

Elderflower14 · 24/11/2024 11:51

The song I find hard to listen to but not hate so to speak is Stay Another Day by E17. It was no 1 the day ds1 was born. He lived for two hours.... 30 years ago this year. He always seems to make sure I hear it on his birthday.
I always get a jolt the first time I hear it each year.. Beautiful song but sad memories. 💔 💔 💔

I was going to say anything by Cliff Richard but I've been beaten to that!

I can't shake the image of Miranda Hart singing Mistletoe and Wine... but I can't find it online... but she did, didn't she? I didn't imagine it?

And maybe Rik Mayall... ?

Spidey66 · 24/11/2024 11:53

Driving Home for Christmas by Chris Rea.

WillowTit · 24/11/2024 11:53

so sorry @Elderflower14

Holly Jolly Christmas. Really don't like it. I like most of the over played oldies. Anything new anyone tries to bring out, is just never quite the same. I dont think i've liked a new Xmas song since the darkness.

That's not a you thing, that's just because 'Don't Let the Bells End' was the last good Christmas song. It's been 21 years, we are due a new decent one.

It mentions Christmas in literally every verse though
