Where is my friend? getting worried now

Friend coming to stay and said she'd be here about 11am so we could have lunch together. Still no sign of her.

Her DP just texted me about 2.45pm and asked if she'd got here safely as she wasn't answering texts and usually drops him a quick text after long drives to let him now she's turned up. He said she left at 9.30am which is right as it's about an hour and a half. I sent her a text about 12.30 along the lines of don't worry about running late I can hold lunch see you in a bit - no reply.

I've looked at her route on google maps - no traffic holdups that I can see. Not yet replied to her DP - will have to say she's not arrived... luckily he's not the type to panic but he will be concerned obviously.

talk me down I'm imagining all sorts of awful things. I wouldn't worry about an hour or even 2 hours at a push but 4 hours late with no communication is concerning especially as I know she left on time and she's usually really reliable give or take 20 minutes

I'm not usually a suspicious type. But it's odd her dp is so calm.
If phone died the WhatsApp wouldn't deliver

That’s so handy! Well I have learned something new today 😂

It is. When DH’s car was in the garage and they were taking ages to fix it we could see whether someone had moved it to work on it or even if they had opened the door!

MounjaroUser · 16/11/2024 16:00

Why didn't he check the tracker when she was late turning up for you? Or in fact when she didn't contact him to say she'd arrived?

eish · 16/11/2024 16:00

What a worrry. This is where shared locations etc really help. I don’t find them weird (as long as all parties are aware etc. stalking is a different thing).

MrsRobinsonsHandprints · 16/11/2024 15:56

Or very Orwellian.

For those with older cars you can buy a tracker, it's about £4/5 pm. We have one fitted on a classic car (to track the car if it was stolen rather than the occupants - like the DH in this we would only log on to the account if the situation was unusual. We would have text OP first as he did)

True, but after the teenagers round here who spent 2 days trapped in an upside down crashed car with 2 of their dead friends because no one could find the car (hidden by bushes/trees) I think I know which option I would choose...

Gosh. This is a worry. Having said that, once I broke down and my iPhone died on me. Luckily I had a work blackberry which I used to call the breakdown cover. It had no personal numbers stored on it so I couldn’t let DH know until I was in the breakdown truck and could plug my phone in. My phone was originally charged but it crashed and died. Really scared me to be honest so I got a new phone soon after.

Everyone should have a few numbers on a piece of paper in their purse or somewhere, just in case of these situations where your phone is stolen/dies. Especially now that not many people have landlines. I don't know anyone's mobile number off the top of my head except my own.

listsandbudgets · 16/11/2024 16:03

@Gobbledygookss That's absolutely terrible.

I was going to write exactly this. Yes, a phone may get flung out of the car out of reach in a crash but at least someone looking for them would know where to look.

butterfly0404 · 16/11/2024 16:04

Hope she's OK, very worrying

LAMPS1 · 16/11/2024 16:05

Could she have taken a different route to you where there was weak/intermittent signal or no coverage at all?

OAPapparently · 16/11/2024 16:05

Her phone must be on if she is receiving the messages and must be in range of Wi-Fi if everything is traceable.

I hope she’s ok OP.

Hoplolly · 16/11/2024 16:05

Fingers crossed all is okay.

Unfortunately they were out of signal, trackers on cars work the same as phones and there are lots of areas with no coverage. It was such an awful tragedy.

Gonnagetgoingreturnsagain · 16/11/2024 16:06

Hope she’s ok, it does sound worrying.

teaandtoastwithmarmite · 16/11/2024 16:06

Hope she’s ok. I turned my find my off after my DP asked me why I’d driven up and down the same motorway ( I easily get lost and he was worried) but I might turn it back on

Hunglikeapolevaulter · 16/11/2024 16:07

OP that is deeply worrying, I'd be sick with nerves. Please let us know that she's okay, everything crossed.

Elphamouche · 16/11/2024 16:07

Whilst I don’t wish to worry you more OP, if she had broken down and been able to call recovery she surely would have contacted you and DP? Especially as you can see her messages have been delivered so she has had signal.
How long will it take him to get there?

Oh I didn't realise that. I thought the crash was in an area of Cardiff that would have been OK for signal but I guess there are black spots all over.

Interestingly my car often seems to get signal even when my phone can't (perhaps they are on different networks)

Wales is terrible for internet, it's worse than most undeveloped countries.

How worrying op.

autienotnaughty · 16/11/2024 16:10

Hopefully it's a broken down/ no signal situation

CurlyhairedAssassin · 16/11/2024 16:11

Does your friend have any drink problems, OP? Is it possible your friend was stopped by police as she was speeding or driving erratically? If she was arrested and taken to the station her car would have had to have been recovered later. She may have been too embarrassed to contact her DP or you.

Flux1 · 16/11/2024 16:12

Hoping all ok x

Shinyandnew1 · 16/11/2024 16:13

It doesn’t say but I presume you’ve both actually tried to phone her?

DoIEver · 16/11/2024 16:13

CurlyhairedAssassin · 16/11/2024 15:54

I find it strange the DP is so calm. Over 4 hours late, no contact at all to anyone? Not normal for him to be calm or assume there is a rational explanation, in my view.

How do you know he's calm? Surely you have no idea how he's feeling....
