What’s the universally best received homemade cake in a work place?

I think it’s brownies (no nuts). Everyone likes a homemade brownie.

I want to bake for my team this weekend. Needs to be something pre-portioned as no knives on site. Nothing fragile like cupcakes as need to take on the bus.

I loathe brownies and muffins.

Warmish, pretty much as soon as they come out . Hope I replied in time!

Yes they spread loads, go from thick sausages to thin biscuits

I left it a minute or so too late to cut (the 4 to is to blame ha ha) , so some cut neatly, some are definitely rustic.

They're delicious, the 4yo was saying "mmmm, they're actually really nice!" ... I did ask her why she was surprised I made nice biscuits, but she just proceeded to eat another one and run one through to DH so he could have one too lol.

Looking forward to dunking in tea!

I covered some in chocolate too, to cover the burned bits LOL 🤣

(We didn't have nuts for the topping)

Agree on muffins. Only nice if less than a couple of hours out the oven.

So pleased you and the little one like them! Do try them with nut topping as well some time. I top mine with flaked almonds chopped up small and sugar shaken with cinnamon.

The problem with Lemon Drizzle is that it does not go with coffee (according to The Archers).

I vote for Carrot Cake.

I was literally going to comment this 😂

I do think tea goes better with lemon, in fairness.

I thought ai was the only one!

I don't like chocolate cake but do like brownies.

Am I broken?

People still talk about my coffee and walnut cake and it’s been 12 years. Generally people have chocolate flavoured things fairly regularly so it doesn’t stand out

Best cake in the world!

Just coffee cake is still good, with a crumbled flake on top of the buttercream, rather than nuts, if worried about allergies.

Smarties in the cupboard?

Is this a hidden cupboard?
or a safe?

no smarties stay in my cupboard long enough for me to get the whisk out

Shush! It’s my secret stash of chocolates!

Callipygion · 16/11/2024 15:21

I made a cheat’s version of caramel shortbread when I had a box of shortbread fingers left over that needed eating, using them as the base instead of the faff of making my own shortbread. Not as nice as all homemade but they went down very well at work, there were no complaints.

StampOnTheGround · 16/11/2024 15:44

I would be happy with any cake except lemon drizzle - which seems to be a popular one on here, please not in my office!!

LivelyHare · 16/11/2024 15:56

Banana bread will gain you slaves

BaronessBomburst · 16/11/2024 16:01

Lemon drizzle!
I was on THAT other thread too. 😂
My lot will eat anything though, including off-cuts of sponges and practice runs.

gingercat02 · 16/11/2024 16:23

I hate brownies. Victoria Sponge or Lemon Drizzle for me

All this talk of lemon drizzle has reminded me of a cracking thread in classics if anyone wants to lose an hour of their evening:

THANKS for posting this, it's a cracker!

Hope LDM is still around and feeling the secondary shame 😂

Waterboatlass · 16/11/2024 16:58

I'd say lemon drizzle is always nice with a cuppa. Brownies have to be really good to not be a disappointment. I've had very few, bought or offered) that have been truly good. Plus lemon has the slightly tangy vote which is nice.

Nothing with ready made sweets in. Too sweet and not nice ingredients. I'd rather just have normal ingredients.

Waterboatlass · 16/11/2024 16:59

Top notch at this time of year would be a really spicy parkin though, try BBC Good food with extra ginger

Natsku · 16/11/2024 17:43

Ginger cake would definitely be nice this time of year.
I made Tottenham cake for my birthday and it went down really well at work. Someone else, on her birthday, brought in a massive triple layer cream cake, which she made gluten free for me. That was bloody amazing. (We have plates and cutlery though)

SugarIsHardtoAvoid · 16/11/2024 18:50

dontmindthegap would you be willing to share your coffee and walnut cake recipe with the masses? 12 years on and still being remembered sounds pretty amazing!

I used to have a Mary Berry cookbook so probably from there but in recent years I’ve used this one and it’s very good: https://www.theguardian.com/lifeandstyle/wordofmouth/2014/apr/16/how-to-make-perfect-coffee-and-walnut-cake

How to make the perfect coffee and walnut cake

Felicity Cloake: More homely than sophisticated and dainty, this cake could keep you up all night and leave you running back and forth to the fridge for multiple midnight snacks
