What’s the universally best received homemade cake in a work place?

I think it’s brownies (no nuts). Everyone likes a homemade brownie.

I want to bake for my team this weekend. Needs to be something pre-portioned as no knives on site. Nothing fragile like cupcakes as need to take on the bus.

Another vote for lemon drizzle. It’s a classic!

DrCoconut · 15/11/2024 22:00

If there is anyone gluten free they will be your biggest fan if you safely include them. We regularly get to sit and watch everyone else have cake, cookies etc. Flavour wise, vanilla traybake.

My old boss brought in a frangipani food of the gods

Love coffee and walnut too but I’ve travel banned it

Rasberry and coconut sponge cake. Baked in a loaf tin. Cut into slices before transporting. Always a winner

orange and almond flour cake if nobody has a nut allergy!

honeyfox · 15/11/2024 22:05

For iced cakes get one of those cake carrier things from Lidl etc, base with big plastic round lid. They are excellent.

In our place they would eat anything. In fact, my husband works in a different office nearby and they have often polished off failed bakes I was going to put in the bin and not even bring in to my crowd.

My lemon drizzle goes down well. Next project is to find a nice Bundt cake recipe for my new tin and try that out on them.

Onlyvisiting · 15/11/2024 22:06

Actually- I am a better biscuit maker than cake, so they are often my go to. Also everyone else brings cake so it makes a change. Also people who don't want a massive piece of cake will probably still eat a single biscuit.
Oat and raisin, shortbread, ginger nuts, snickerdoodles are all on my regular rotation. If feeling fancy I make small shortbread rounds and fill them with coffee, lemon or vanilla icing to make a sandwich biscuits.

Brownies are too chocolatey and often super sickly. Also I suspect are frequently made with cheap fat and type of chocolate and you can tell

Millionaire's shortbread is my absolute favourite but it has to be good, so often tastes like bought caramel and cheap cooking chocolate on top. Just sad and disappointing. And also I dont think it's an 'everybody loves it' kind of thing.

Tbry24 · 15/11/2024 22:08

I don’t like brownies or anything chocolate. Lemon drizzle would be my top choice. But Victoria sponge, carrot cake or cheesecake I also love. Anything fruity.

ForGreyKoala · 15/11/2024 22:08

Carrot cake always went down well in our office - apart from one or two people who turned their noses up. Otherwise chocolate or lemon drizzle.

Scones go best in dh's.

This is so easy and always goes down well, you can make it as a tray bake and it looks beautiful dusted with a little icing sugar.

Raspberry bakewell cake

Raspberry bakewell cake

This simple almondy cake is a great way of using up pick-your-own raspberries

waits for the people who never eat home made cake because it's unclean

All the more cake for the rest of us!

Another vote for lemon drizzle cake.

florasl · 15/11/2024 22:11

These are always requested in my office and by my husbands colleagues - https://www.waitrose.com/ecom/recipe/martha-collisons-chocolate-florentine-tarts?srsltid=AfmBOoqPAjWgbaM7xV6jkLP9lG1OYtHKAafb1-aQk7_t7me5k2-Wxb8ewe

Don't wait for them. They're boring fuckers who suck the joy out of simple pleasures and small acts if thoughtfulness.

Drbrowns · 15/11/2024 22:12

Almond slices. Shortcrust base, raspberry Jam and frangipane, topped with flaked almonds. Goes beautifully with tea or coffee

BCBird · 15/11/2024 22:13

Not a brownie lover. Would be grateful if anyone made hime made cakes and brought into wotk

Welsh cakes. Lemon drizzle or tray baked sponge with jam and coconut on top.

Yes. Welsh cakes for sure.

Or lemon drizzle (but not with icing. That's too much)

Brownies are heavy and gooey and generally unpleasant to eat, I think.

Or how about going old school with fairy cakes?

SugarIsHardtoAvoid · 15/11/2024 21:49

Lemon drizzle is too sickly sweet. I don’t want to eat anything with icing on at work, too messy. Ditto cream fillings.
I like ginger cake or lemon and poppyseed cake. Brownies are a bit boring unless full of nuts, but nuts are not suitable office fodder. Home made chocolate chip cookies are a great alternative for taking to work.
My all time favourite cake with a cup of tea at work is banana bread. With chocolate chips in it or chopped dates. Nut free for work. Easy to transport and easy to make. Can’t go wrong! https://www.bbc.co.uk/food/recipes/bananabread_85720

I was hoping on to say Nigella's banana bread.

In reality I'm afraid my colleagues get a tin of biscuits and chocolates.

Scirocco · 15/11/2024 22:16

https://zaatarandzaytoun.com/sfouf/

Possibly not for every workplace, but sfouf (turmeric cake) is popular at my work too. It's egg-free and can be made vegan if required, and holds together in convenient little cubes.

NewName24 · 15/11/2024 22:18

For the office, you want something you can pick up and hold, then eat with one hand.
Which rules out things like Victoria Sponge and Coffee and Walnut cake.

I like lemon drizzle and / or ginger / or banana - any sort of 'loaf' cake, but I much prefer any sort of biscuit cake....tiffin... malteser tray bake.....Mars Bar cake.....any sort of fridge cae / tray bake.

Millionaires shortbread is lovely (prob my fave) but can be too gooey for one handed eating).

lonelywater · 15/11/2024 22:19

bit of a faff, but a proper homemade Battenberg.....

Onlyvisiting · 15/11/2024 22:20

MikeRafone · 15/11/2024 21:34

lemon drizzle is far better than chocolate brownies any day of the week

it has flavour, its moist, its light and tangy

chocolate is great, as chocolate no need to do anything with it and butter makes the crumb or wrong in cake - you need oil

Ew, no 🤣 hate cakes made with oil, I can taste it. Look good, taste shit.
Butter all the way, and salted butter too, no matter what the recipe says!
