What side of the bed do you sleep on?

In relation to your bedroom door?
I need help to settle a debate with a friend.
I say most men sleep by the door, and most women away from. Could be sexist claptrap but I think I'm onto something.

We have our own beds. Thankfully.

Twoshoesnewshoes · 11/11/2024 19:17

Also on the right regardless of doors, wees, burglars etc. and the door is at the end of the bed so we’re both near/far equally.

Scutterbug · 11/11/2024 19:18

I’m furthest from the door because I am then by the window which I like open all year round. He is Warner on the other side!

bengalcat · 11/11/2024 19:20

Whichever side the dogs not on - but I’m usually by the door

GameOfJones · 11/11/2024 19:21

I always sleep on the left side of the bed (if standing at the bottom of the bed looking at it). In our current and our previous house that is the side furthest away from the door. But we wouldn't change sides if the door were closer to me. I have "my" side of the bed and even when DH is working away sleep on that side.

Freethebees · 11/11/2024 19:22

Is it to do with burglars then?!?

Ginkypig · 11/11/2024 19:22

For me it doesn’t matter if I am alone or sharing or where the door is or actually any other circumstance except,

the only thing that matters is I can only breath if I am lying on one particular side facing out if I lie on my other side or my back or my stomachs my nose collapses and I can’t get air.

that rule is the rule to rule all other rules, it’s the only rule that matters to me!

AlteredStater · 11/11/2024 19:25

For me it's about the actual side of the bed, not whether the door is nearer. I prefer to sleep on the left side, it just happens that's next to the door. It is just as well though because I need to get up in the night!

JimPanzee · 11/11/2024 19:25

I sleep closest to the door, but that's only because it's on the right hand side of the bed. No matter where we are, we always sleep on "our" sides - doesn't matter where the door is.

NailsHairNipsHeels · 11/11/2024 19:25

I sleep on the left side of the bed if you're standing at the foot of the bed looking at the pillows.
It just so happens that in my house and in DP house that means I'm closed to the door.

Even with EXH I slept nearest the door that's just the way my previous houses were set up for me to sleep on my preferred side.

Disasterclass · 11/11/2024 19:28

On the left, which in our house means closest to the door but if we're away it's often furthest. Never really thought about the relevance of being close to the door

AllProperTeaIsTheft · 11/11/2024 19:30

I'm nearest the door but only slightly (the door is opposite the foot of our bed, but slightly to my side. I don't think you're right, OP. I think most people have a preferred side of the bed and sleep on that side even if they are staying somewhere else (hotel etc), regardless of which side is nearer the door. I absolutely always sleep on the left side (as you're looking at the bed from the foot of it).

AllProperTeaIsTheft · 11/11/2024 19:31

Btw it never would have occurred to me to choose on the basis of how near the door it is.

Strawberrycheesecake7 · 11/11/2024 19:32

I sleep closest to the door but only because I like sleeping on the left and that’s how our bedroom is laid out. In our old home the left side was furthest from the door.

Gingerbread981 · 11/11/2024 19:35

I’d sleep on the left, nothing to do with the door. Now on my own so sleep in the middle.
if I’m away and share a bed with my child, I sleep nearest the loo.

QueenOfWeeds · 11/11/2024 19:35

I was always on the right, regardless of the location of the door, but at the moment we swap depending on who is on overnight duty with the baby. It’s made such a difference to my sleep, and I often don’t even fully wake to the monitor if I’m on the “wrong” side now.

user1471453601 · 11/11/2024 19:37

I sleep on the side furthest from the door. And posts from others have made me realise is just silly. I need a rollator to walk anywhere and need the bathroom at least once a night, so it would be easier for me if I slept on the other side of the bed.

As an aside, which made me laugh "rollator" turned into tomatoes with auto correct. The idea that I ca nnot walk without a tomato made me laugh

Songbird54321 · 11/11/2024 19:37

I am on the left of the bed, regardless of door location. In our current house and previous house that just so happened to be closest to the door but when we move in a month or so it will be closest to the window. We'll see how I feel about that at the time

BurglarAndSwag · 11/11/2024 19:39

Always, ALWAYS closest to the door in case of a clandestine Police raid, unless there is a flat roof and drainpipe outside, in which case I'm near the winda. (and keep me socks on, 😇)

Crikeyalmighty · 11/11/2024 19:40

Left as it's nearer the en suite and it's me that tends to get up in night

CrispyK · 11/11/2024 19:41

I prefer to sleep away from the window, but I always sleep on the right, because I sleep on my right side and I don’t like facing inwards with DH breathing/snoring into my face!

Emotionalsupporthamster · 11/11/2024 19:42

I’ve always been left and DH right. Currently that’s him closest to the door but it several previous homes it’s been the other way round.

Whatanidiot123 · 11/11/2024 19:43

For the last 12 years I’ve been nearest the door but we moved to our loft conversion bedroom last year and now I’m nearest the en-suite (my bathroom) and further from the door.

PiggieWig · 11/11/2024 19:44

I always slept by the door because the most likely intruders were the kids and it was me who got up and put them back to bed. Had a burglar entered they may have been surprised to be ushered along the landing and tucked in under a Postman Pat quit with a teddy.

Now I’m on my own I sleep wherever the cool spot it, then when it warms up I find the next one.
